Interesting. I'd love to have him back...but in saying that how do we know he will be a good coach?

If he came back as a player coach that would be interesting too. But he has a year (maybe 2 in fact) left on his current deal. If that did happen it would have to be on the understanding that Cooney is our first choice 9.

Great news for Ulster. He bleeds Ulster and will definitely add something to the coaching staff.
Says a lot about the guy willing to go back after the shambles of his exit.

Surely the only way he could come back is if he "retires"

    You'd think so.

If he does come back as a coach and works with Cooney, improves his game management etc. I’d have him to overtake Murray in time to come.

Ulster have lost their Physio Gareth Robinson after 18 seasons with the club!

Him and Johnny Davis summoned to Dublin and given the boot I believe.

More announcements to come, hopefully the one that everyone is waiting for.

If there had been 2 seasons until the incoming RWC. People forget how tough it must be behind an Ulster!

As for Pienarr says a lot for the man if he would for go a RWC to return to Ulster and for his family! Man just perfect example of class.

    That's a big big shout!

Murray is the most effective scrum half on the planet IMO.

Cooney is only a year younger than Murray. He is never going to be half the player that Murray is.

Conor Murray is the best scrum half in the world. John Cooney is only one year younger and has only just completed his first season as undisputed first choice 9 for a province.

Cooney's good but Murray is an all time great in Irish rugby.

Cooney can usurp Marmion in the pecking order, definitely. Murray is still one of the best players we've ever produced.

I think people forget how old Cooney actually is, he's not a young post-academy prospect, he's 28. He's a fine player and will hopefully improve over the next season or two, but Murray is the best scrumhalf in the world, and they're the same age. He won't even get close to that level.

We’ll wait and see! Big shout I know! Just think Cooney is a lot better than he’s given credit and is gonna keep improvIng, throw in guidance from Piernarr and he would be a different player too Murray. Have a few years to stand corrected, someone can quote me when he retires lol.

There is no way he is coming back as a player/coach which was the original rumour. He will need to retire to come back to Ulster and there is no way he is ever taking the pitch.

Maybe there was truth in the previous rumour! Since it was blocked by the IRFU, he’s decided to return and just coach as that would be allowed?

He is under contract with Montpelier! There is no way he was ever coming back to play.

Keep in mind this rumour started in S’Africa not some fanatic on UAfC. Seems very random!

Under contract yes, but if he decided to call it a day and retire? how would that work?

He would be unable to play for Ulster having retired. Montpelier would retain his playing license.

He can come back as a coach though no problem if he retires.

If he did and that’s a big if! what do we think he would be coaching? More back room staff to get the boot?

Back and skills coach I'd assume?

Payne has officially retired and taken up a coaching role at Ulster. Fantastic player for province and country.

He's going to Oz as part of Ireland's coaching team. Hopefully he'll learn a bit from Schmidt and co that he can use at Ulster.

That's a pity. A brilliant player to watch.

Another blow! But what an intelligent player! Hope he can transfer that to the squad

Left Irish rugby in a better place than he found it. I remember when Joe selected him at centre it turned a lot of heads but I think it was a trust returned in spades by a top class player. I hope he suffers no longer term effects and has a great career after rugby.
