Whatever you feel about this issue think about this, there's women who can't bring themselves to bring babies into the world when they can't afford them, can't bear thinking of their son or daughter living in an 24/7 incapacitated state whereby they have to do everything for them. You don't know what every expectant mother could face. If you could cope with more sleepless nights than you can shake a stick at and stay relatively sane go ahead but not all women can do it.

I think some damage has been inflicted on the repeal side tonight having watched that debate.

Perhaps. OR perhaps the No side came across as overbearing. We are all assuming that the loudest people won. You’d need to survey undecideds to ascertain the effect of the debate.

Did she do a poll of people afterwards? Like, even if she had a phone in poll it would be a good way to ascertain how opinions had changed, if any.

If anyone missed the debate. It's repeated at 3.30 am, so set the skybox. It's not up on the RTE player yet.

Edit-it is on the player, but you can't skip the adverts.

I think some damage has been inflicted on the repeal side tonight having watched that debate.

The behaviour (constant noisy whooping, jeering, etc) of some anti-repeal people in the audience was quite ugly. That sort of undignified panto-style nonsense might go down well with die-hard Youth Defence types, but I don't think they did their side any favours.

I doubt anyone in the YES Camp would be changing their mind based on some show on RTE.
I did not watch it as I would rather watch adverts than watch any **** rte would produce.

If a tv programme can convince you its wrong to take away a womans right to choose, then you are watching the wrong programmes.

Absolutely, we got beat up very badly. Found it very frustrating, winning is everything here and there's no lie too low for the No side to try and achieve that.

I didn't see the debate last night but I'm going to watch it on the player. Judging by the amount of comments here since last night, I'm guessing it was heated, full of the usual No side ridiculous BS.

Do your own research, educate yourself on what the proposed legislation will actually be, what the actual scenario will be, don't listen to the "abortion up to birth" nonsense soundbites.

    Repeal the 8th.

Theres another Referendum programmeon RTE on Thursday evening. Would you Believe an Irish problem at 22.15pm A documentary they are saying. Hopefully it will give the honest position that the 8th leaves people in.

Just catching up in the thread. I didn't watch the debate but I can tell from the comments here that it was pretty heated.

Some of you should be absolutely ashamed of your comments, while not reportable, they were certainly hostile, personal and demeaning to other users. I read some disgusting comments by some of the regulars on this thread and would really would have expected some restraint from them.

I didn't buy Maria's faux compassion either to be honest.

But Brid could have managed that a bit better... Steen's smugness and Ronan Mullens would get a rise out of me too at the same time..

I watched this with my 16 year old daughter - couldn't get online to comment on the thread. My daugther asked loads of questions and is thinking of doing a poll at her school - Loreto Convent - good luck with that one.

We were incensed with the lies of the No side and the constant clapping and whooping of both sides. I was disappointed with the quality of the debate, I wish it was just based on the medical or lack of medical care of women who are pregnant. women who are treated as second class citizens.

Peter Boylan looked fed up with the lot of them - they are not listening to him and just shout him down with lies.

This debate did the Yes side no favours but I still think the Yes side will win.

It was mentioned earlier in the thread that the Claire Byrne show didn't include any help numbers afterwards.

If someone need help of any kind in a crisis pregnancy, the Crisis Pregnancy agency's website is http://positiveoptions.ie/.

And if you've had an abortion and need to talk to someone about it, teh Irish Family Planning Association has 10 centres nationwide that offer free counselling.

One young girl made the point to assume it will be abortion on demand, sets a low standard for what Ireland thinks of its women. This Social abortion tag could only be spouted regularly by the browbeaters at Iona and the likes.
You know the pilgrims left Britain for the new world, to escape a country being taken by the devil...if they don't like marriage equality, womens right to choose etc, why not jump on the mayflower mark 2!!!

A very emotional time for many girls and women and anyone else affected by abortion. Also a very emotional time for victims of rape and incest.

The posters say "it's my body"- that's a fallacy. There's two bodies at play.

Your error is in focusing on the word "body" rather than the word "my".

We are aware essentially two bodies are in play, though the non independent nature of one of them can not be ignored.

But there is not two PEOPLE in play. There is no "my" in the case of the fetus. There is no personhood there to which we can use concepts like "my" "his" "her" and concepts of posession.

So when they are saying "Its my body" they are not engaged in the fallacy you think they are. They are just saying something with a lot more depth and nuance than you cottoned on to.
If a woman is raped, or if her life is in any form of danger then my all means abort.

Describe to me the process you imagine could be implemented by which a woman who is raped can access abortion.
Otherwise just give the kid up for adoption.

Describe to me the process you imagine a person can go through in Ireland to put a child up for adoption.

You really want to punch a 40 something year old woman in the face? Would you not rather argue against her?

No wouldn't, her imperious manner with her school mamish "I'm the only lawyer here" and the way she talks down to everyone literally sends me into a spin.

I'm an educated woman of a similar vintage to Maria Steen. The fact that an educated woman wants to control the reproduction of another woman makes my blood boil. I can forgive the Mattie McGrath's of this world as they were raised in a different era to me and with all the catholic wrongs (and there have been too many to mention) his whole world is based on catholic teaching and he can't change. Why any body wants to control a strangers medical treatment is beyond me - I cant comprehend it at all.

She's just poison, doesn't care what lies she runs out, its all about her and the mothers dont count.

I don't think I can even imagine. I found the marriage equality referendum hard going, and it was only afterwards I realised how much of an affect it had on me.

But the No side in that campaign were teddy bears compared to this one. This must be 10 times worse, and I suspect the No side will get even nastier before this is over.

Yes, I remember 1983, and they are only warming up.

If the polls show they are still behind in the run-up, it is going to get a LOT nastier.

Experience in other countries suggests that the final days of this referendum will be an unending river of bile and diarrhoea from the "No" side - their intention not being to change anyone's mind to a "No", but to confuse and scaremonger enough to make some people stay at home, while not leaving enough time for their lies to be debunked.

Imagine the scumbaggery we'd have been subjected to if Google hadn't stopped taking ads.

Yeah, anyone of a sensitive nature, please change the channel. This is expected to be graphic.

We return to regularly scheduled programming in 10 days.

Yes. Winning is everything. There's so many lives at stake. And I fear our nation will move on to euthanasia next

    indeed we will

And then maybe as a nation we can try to start being a little bit more civilized and sympathetic towards suffering humans
