My theory of no news is good news is that lots of other players have announced their retirements and Payne hasn't...yet...

Isn’t there something about insurance payouts if your career ends due to injury and that head related injury retirements are hard to prove? Something about a player having to be unable to play for over a year before they can claim. Payne would arguably have been set for a central contract or a big deal overseas (as he had just become a Lion) so it would be worth a lot to him.

Not sure where I heard this so I could be wrong but I thought that’s why nothing official was announced even though there are plenty of rumors.

No idea. You could well be right.

As I say I'm trying to take a glass half full attitude and see how it goes!

We'll have none of that here. Cooney could well get an Ireland call up next season and hence miss a lot of games, throw in an injury to McPhilips and we are screwed.

    That's more like it.

Don't worry we'll soon knock that out of him.

At least he will be well stocked up on medals to survive his time with Ulster.

So Cipriani heading to Gloucester apparently. That will give Gloucester three proven outhalves in their squad with Billy Burns and Owen Williams both there.

Surely something has to give? My Billy Burns for Ulster train is leaving the station. All aboard.

Jordi may also be called up for the squad for Ireland next season ;)

Anyone think we'll see Lowry at all next season? By all accounts he *is* the messiah coming through but whether they'll take a punt on him yet I'm not sure?
Must be a similar age when we pinned our colours to the mast with PJ? Allbeit I suspect have Ruan outside him alleviated a lot of pressure

With our lack of backs next season and rotation, can well see it. These guys just need opportunities with a settled teams to develop, and not thrown to the dogs. Lowry might play the old cameo, Curtis on the other hand I think we may see more? but Lowry is injured is he not?
The sad fact is our academy players look like they need to skip pre-season and focus on strength and build their physiques.
I'd love those backorders to come through good this season, but really think they need another full season or two to fully mature to senior rugby.
I'm absolutely gutted Rea will be out for months with knee problems. Good off season to cement his maturity and he would of been a very good prospect next season. He's done very very well for someone parachuted into the senior squad without a few years of professional developement.

Also nice to see Jonny Murphy getting back to Ireland.
Maybe when Best retires he can come home.

What can us Connacht fans expect from him?

Can't say I've seen him play, but remember players in those PR videos quoting him as the hardest trainer.

I hope Ulster didn’t just release him from his contract.

That can’t be right, he is contacted to Ulster and only got out of that to go home. Surely Ulster would block that.

L'Equipe are the ones reporting it.

Would definitely be a massive slap in the face considering he faced the media and said he was returning home for family reasons.

If this turns out true, this is just another example of what a shambles Ulster are.

If he is genuinely visiting La Rochelle tomorrow he needs to be told to fcuk off and don't come back. That would be insane. Ulster have a huge match on Sunday.

On a slight tangent, apparently the reason Townsend and Scotland are playing hard ball on McFarland is that Ulster and the IRFU spoke to him and signed him and the SRU knew nothing about it.

Wouldn't blame them if that's true.

is Gibbes not signed to take over at Waikato?
I know La Rochelle are minted but poor form by Gibbes on a few forms if he does end up there

Well I suspect he was told to say that rather than "I'm out of this sh1t".

If it turns out to be true he should be pursued to pay up the remainder of his contract

To me it would say a lot more about Gibbes than Ulster.

As he's a former waikato man, it would be fierce bad form to renege on them after being announced to take over.
However, due to his history with them, they may also me willing to let him out of any signed contract if the la Rochelle offer was too good to be refused.

Maybe it's just ospreys stirring sh!te ahead of the playoff :)
