as much as i want a "dockless" system to evolve from the dublin bike scheme.
bleeper bike just dont do it for me.

expenseive fee, miniscule number of bikes, complex rules.

wish them luck but cant see it catching on in its current form

UCD are plugging them as part of their commitment to easing transport issues.

so can you no longer just leave them anywhere? do you have to return them to a designated location?

Yeah, saw that earlier. Really highlights that it's not a good idea to let companies run riot with these schemes without some kind of overall plan

i guess those bikes are not useful outside urban areas, i.e. for the sort of uses the buffalo bikes are designed for.

worth reading the comments under that article from people living in China. The whole "blocking up the footpaths" thing is somewhat exaggerated and the schemes seem to be running well in many cities. The problem with piles of broken bikes seems to be down to companies going bust but also due to the sheer number of bikes involved (over a million in some cities).

While the waste is criminal, I had to smile at one of the Guardian comments:
    Katie Melua foresaw this.

After seeing loads of these around Sandyford and Stillorgan recently I downloaded the app. There's practically zero information on the website or app and the map doesn't show any bikes at all. I have a couple of very specific routes where this would be useful so I'll either use it all the time or never use it at all, so I need to know exactly where these bikes are useable.
Do I have to pay up before the map shows where the bikes can be used?
It all seems very amateurish when with a bit of care put into the website and app it might make this a valid option for me.

pilots by 2 companies soon, council says fee per bike to €50 https://dublincity.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/332978 2-300 bikes X 2 and further expansion dependent on more stands and only 50% of extra spaces = No. stationless bikes

The user, who paid a €15 (£13) deposit, could then leave the bike anywhere, unlocked.
That does not sound like a sensible business plan.

I presume they mean not locked to anything but the wheel locked..

I wonder how all the self locking wheel versions are doing compared to the cable lock where its possible to lock it to something.

That's interesting, after tax and insured the highest rated criteria relate to how the operator will keep the bikes clear ( locked to Sheffield's stands, rotated to hubs, inter operable with other vendors, etc)

Seems that they are looking for an operator for the entity scheme that would then license bikes to be added to the scheme rather than have lots of individual companies.

These dockless bikes are causing mayhem across the world. At least the council are taking a considered approach to them.

it's an exaggeration too - there are plenty of places where they're working fine, but that doesn't make the news because it's boring.

I'm already a bit annoyed by all the parking they're taking up in dun laoghaire. However they also seem super handy if you're stuck out bikeless for some reason. They weigh a ton though.
I think each bike that comes in should came with it's own Sheffield stand. Now that would be super handy. The bike parking around town is a joke post cross city luas.

There are two of them in Shankhill that appear not to have moved since it started.

Shankill is not the right place for them. It doesn’t have the footfall, and most people passing through the village are local, typically with bikes at home if they want to cycle.

The bike racks there never have any bikes attached when i come through except these two. Even locals will not use them, as you say, if they are heading home, they don't want these as they have to look for a suitable drop off. only really useful for someone maybe in UCD who gets fed up off the over packed buses.

They're in feckin Rathcoole never mind Shankhill. Barmy.

There is a lots of these at Balally LUAS. Many bike racks taken up by them. I would doubt very many people that pass even know they are there or what it’s all about.

The one in Shankhill never moves, it just sits there week after week in all weather. The tyres must be deflated by now at least.

Roll flat tyres. Impossible to pedal, zero maintenance.

They seem to be doing pretty well in Sligo at least.

There are at least two in Shankhill whenever I pass. The other day was the first time I seen the bike stands full as well. Maybe they are gettign use but I am doubtful. I was more impressed by the MTB kid who went through the village from one end to the other on his rear wheel, which distracted from the Bleeper bikes.

http://www.dublincity.ie/bleeperbike-and-urbo-granted-licences-operate-stationless-bike-hire-scheme-dublin-city DCC announces bleeper bikes and urbo doing the trial
Users can sign up to either operator with full interoperability between the two schemes. Bikes are sourced via an App which unlocks the bike. Once locked to a Sheffield stand at destination the hire period ceases.
the urbo bikes http://urbosolutions.com/how-it-works/ are the ones with the locks around the wheel how do you lock that to a sheffield stand? is the geofencing that precise?

someone says that urbo have added a cable lock to their bikes

Looks like the trial with Turbo will fail then.

However, if you use them you could take your own lock to lock it to a Sheffield stand. It would guarantee that there was a bike available afterwards :D

Two of these have been locked at Dundrum Town centre for weeks now. Its really annoying as there are so few bike parking spaces there anyway and it's always difficult to get a space.

Only last week I was cycling through Shankill and looking at the sign I realised it was not shankhill. I know wonder do alot of people think it is Shankhill or if it is just the fast speaking of many Irish people make it sound that way and in fact I am just an unobservant idiot.

A few years back Paddy Power opened a shop on the main street with a huge sign in the window spelling "Shankhill" ... red faces all round and was replaced shortly afterwards!

i think that depending on which way you approached enniskerry a few years back, there were three possible spellings of the name as gaeilge on the road signs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,097 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

I grew up there so it has always been a bug bear of mine when it is spelt or pronounced wrong.

it actually comes from the gaeilge

Sean Chill - meaning old church

Cost of being designed to never be maintained. 10x the rolling resistance.

On their website in One British city they’ve added a cable lock to ensure it’s locked to a stand and not freestanding blocking a path
I imagine they’ll use that here
