Power City Yes - DID and Harvey Norman No.

DID price for the Saorview Connect STB is now €149.99 (cant see a mention of a trade in of the old STB) - Harvey Norman still €199.

    Agreed

I think €149 is a step in the right direction, adding the recording feature would be the next decent step. Then perhaps adding TV3 Player.

Yeah - DID - 149 - no trade in needed...

With the functionality it currently offers that is still €100 too much

Hi - I've been using the connect box for about 2 and half months. I've noticed that the RTE and TG4 players tend to hang when you try to play content sometimes.

Annoyingly the RTE player will play the ads no problem but then give the message that the server cannot be reached. A reboot of the box normally fixes it.

I contacted Saorview any they say it could be down to the router however nextflix plays no problem via mi box android tv on same connection.

I'll have to try router reboot but just wondering if anyone else had similar experience ?

    Cheers !

I have given up using the RTE player on my Samsung for precisely that reason - adverts play but not the programme. Retry and advert plays but not the programme. Vowed to never try again.

As the price has fallen to €150, I was beginning to think of maybe get a Connect box - but I will now wait a bit longer. Perhaps it might get cheaper, perhaps they might get the recording to work, perhaps it might have series link - perhaps not.

    Just another disappointment.

Agree with Sam above - this "feature" is common on the other RTE Player platforms.

ok thanks for the feedback :-) Looks like more than network issue - perhaps recording feature will be a workaround when released ....

And when the recording firmware update comes, customers are gonna have to pay roughly another €50 for a decent external hardrive

    It will cost €149

Still too much, needs to be sub €100 for me to even consider.

The big winner for me and everyone else I would imagine is to have saorview and a proper freesat integration in one epg with no switching required.

If that was there with all the recording bells, I would gladly pay a €300 price tag.

Exactly as above, even at €149 it simply doesn't offer enough for me to consider it.

The market for it must be so tiny. Those using Saorview as their main service are likely to have a TV with Saorview already built in. If this box had a hard drive inside, then maybe €149 would be justified. But right now, it offers very little above what people already have.

Well, in its favour is that it provides a good solution for those that want a Freesat and Saorview integrated STB but who mainly watch Saorview and RTE in particular. It provides (or rather will provide) series link recording for Saorview channels, full RTE player integration, satellite FTA channels (but no EPG) so apart from the last item, much of what people want.

Now, I'm not sure how good the RTE Player integration is because that fails on my Samsung to such an extent that I have given up trying ti use it. If it was guaranteed to work, then I might consider it.

At €149 it is a bit pricey, and if it could take a 2.5 inch HDD internally, then I would probably go with it. Of course, the RTE Player would need to work flawlessly.

It offers a little, but not enough. I'm not interested in "coming soon" features - especially when that message is coming from Saorview!

Most Saorview TVs will allow series link recording today when you connect a USB hard drive. RTE Player is actually poor on every platform, so that's not a selling point either. There are a lot of TVs out there today that have Freesat included with full EPG guide (I will admit flipping between them is easier on some than others!).

This box is a dead duck. We knew that once the final details started leaking about it. Time has done it no favours except for deep discounts.

I agree with what you say. I will wait till it has recording and hope they bring out a version that includes a HDD.

RTE Player is a disaster because it plays the ads very reliably and insistantly. Unfortunately it does not play the programmes hardly at all.

Of course, since it is not recording, we can only assume it will include series link.

Experience tells me that with regard to Saorview, disappointment always follows any expectation without exception.

Imagine if we had gone with the UK's D-Book standard instead of the cobbled together one we decided to choose for this jurisdiction. An already existing supply of proven recording capable STBs would have been available from the start.

Yes for saorview(perhaps) and freesat but not both together in one box. I agree though it would have been better than the standard that was adopted.

Are there any Freeview and Freesat STBs that have joint EPGs?

I do not think there are, and that is what you would be looking for - it does not exist - just Freeview OR Freesat.

To be fair Sam I was just thinking of the terrestrial only option, not satellite. I have an old Humax Fox T2. Still works fine. I can get both Saorview and Freeview (in Dundalk) so the box was great for me. Didn't mind the Saorview channels being stuck in the 800s. Series link even worked until they disabled it. Always thought that was a bit of a sneaky move by them.

So do none of the Saorview branded boxes provide Series Record? ... really?

Yes but as you know the majority cannot receive Freeview terrestrial so the D book standard would not have made any difference save for cheaper boxes perhaps.

RTE player not working on connect box now. Plays all the ads like silk but won't play any TV show. Not going to succeed without resolving this issue and integrating UK channels. Definitely looking more dead in the water as time goes on.

I get that on my Samsung - so no RTE Player played on it since.

It's working again. Lucky I'm very technical. I turned it off and on again. Lol!
