If we have to take one of them I’d rather take Byrne.

I think Byrne work be better for Ulster, but I want to win a RWC, and if we're doing this, we should go the whole hog and get Carbery. If we're prioritising Ireland over the provinces, let's do it properly, and not with half measures.

Not very far. I'd like to get back to my substantive point, which is that this decision/pressure on the young lads is all about Team Ireland, but foolishly I included a criticism of Carbery which I thought balanced the overly positive picture being painted, and of course that became the most important thing to respond to. Sigh.
It was, because it was way ott. If you'd just said that about the kicks being charged down, I'd have just passed it by.

It isn't all about team Ireland either. Yes, that's clearly a factor, but Ulster badly need a ten and even I can see that Leinster have surplus. It's not a palatable decision, but I can see that it has to be made.

Posted in Leinster thread. But times now reporting neither will move.

TBH not in Ulster's interest forcing an unwanted move to develop a short term player he will leave promptly. If anything it's a kick in the face for McPhilips.

    Isn't McPhilips leaving?

Rumoured yes, but confirmed no? would be a shame now he's getting plenty of game time.

Well, looks like it's all academic anyway.

The headline doesn't reflect the content. It's basically a rehash of Fogarty's interview yesterday where he said they wouldn't be forcing any player out.

Ah lads I can't believe Ulster fans would seriously be turning their nose up at either of Carbery or Byrne at the minute. Talk about beggars being choosers...

The above conversation got me thinking who was the last Ulster player to be a regular in the No.8 position for Ireland. I'm thinking you'd have to go as far back as Brian Robinson. Anyone think of anyone more recent?

Didn’t Paddy Johns play 8 for a while with Ireland?

I don't remember it myself but it's possible.

Although I just remembered about Dion O'Cuienneagain (spelling is definitely wrong) who was more recent than Robinson.

On another note, PR band wagon:
Ulster to host Uruguay in November

    The first step to independence!

Can’t help but feel Ulster are going to get absolutely screwed over at out half.

I doubt they would turn up their nose at either but Ulster aren't begging for anything. It isn't Ulster's idea nor did Ulster order the exile of a very good 10 of our own.

TBH if keeping McPhilips and a leinster out half meant getting another decent 2nd row/loosehead. I'd eat there arm off. Strengthen the forwards and let McPhilips grow another season. But that is only a dream.
Without that I'd want McPhilips to get as much game time as possible. McPhilips looks very slight? was Jackson as slight when he broke through.

In that if we’re lucky we’ll be going in to the season pinning all our hopes on McPhillips.

    Not a great situation.

If Carbery and Byrne say no then time for the IRFU to splash the cash even if it means paying over the odds. They created this mess.

Carbery would be a great signing. With Piutau going and serious doubts over Payne we need a good full back.

That's the issue he wouldn't becoming for game time at 15! though. I'd be very happy with him playing there though.

And if we had to send one, I'd rather it was Carbery. So, I think we're on the same page. I definitely think Leinster management agree when it comes to the pecking order of starters at 10.

    That's extremely questionable.

This not start the blame game again, we are where we are! all we can do is envisage some solutions now?

If the deal can't be done for Carberry or Byrne and the IRFU are forced to spend cash, I believe it should be on getting Madigan back.

More chance Jackson coming back to Ulster that Madigan!

Madigan is the starting 10 at a very exciting team in Bristol who are splashing the cash. He would be taking a pay cut to come to Ulster. It's not happening.

I said if the IRFU were splashing cash. Obviously enough to entice him back. Anyway, looks like Cathal Marsh on his way lads. Yiz'll be grand!

Silly suggestion but we did have a scrum half/out half who left recently and who has had a year abroad, if hey came back it would severally alter anti Irfu undertone.

Not to mention bring leadership, game management, experience and could potentially mentor both positions.
