Animal rights activists declare war on Russia

Some good old-fashioned Russian pre-match entertainment...

Animal welfare groups have expressed outrage after a circus bear was used to open a soccer match in Russia's town of Pyatigorsk at the weekend.
The bear, named Tima, clapped to fans while standing on its hind legs and passed the ball to a referee before the third-tier match between FC Mashuk-KMV and FC Angusht on Saturday.

With just two months left before the World Cup kicks off, welfare groups say they hope the international outcry will bring an end to the practice of using wild animals for entertainment in the country.

UK director for animal welfare group Four Paw, Brian da Cal, said the footage of the performing bear in Russia was "shocking".

"The World Cup is obviously a huge sporting event that is coming up very soon. And I think a lot of people would be shocked to see that at a sporting event in a place like Russia," he said.

Footage of the performance posted online has drawn international condemnation as a case of animal exploitation.

Well, it's Russia. It's a backwards, savage place. Humans barely have any rights in Russia, so we shouldn't be surprised that they treat animals like sh1t.

Yeah remember when Ireland allowed animals to perform in circuses? Gosh how long ago was that? Thank goodness we are no longer savages like these Russians are their adorable clapping bear.

Western countries: Well ... the animal was born in captivity and wouldn't be able to fend for itself in the wild.

    Russia: Backward savage place.

Hey, let's not be confused here; Animal welfare through most of the western world is awful. Ireland is one of the poorest.

But Russia and China, being the biggest nearly-western countries, take animal cruelty to new heights.

Dogs love shows. They are not forced to perform, they have to look their best so are extremely well looked after unlike the matted overweight pets banished to back yards with no company for most of their lives. Nothing like a wild animal forced to perform. Dogs love being with their owners.

We are very very bad indeed. Fix your own place first before gunning for others.

See how the bear did not try to maul its owner or the ref this suggests it may have a smidgen of affection for its owner.

We have excellent legislation but no one to enforce it. The British have the RSPCA but they donate six times more per person than we do to animal welfare charities.

Yes, and more to the point, Goldilocks, the three bears didn't maul her.

Ah the RSPCA - It gets lots of money but what does it do with? That has been the issue over the last decade or so ...

Ive seen videos from china of bears which would bring tears to your eyes.

Muslim Halal slaughter which happens in Ireland where the animal isnt stunned is barbaric and should be banned to.

I get the animal rights activists . They are complaining about current issues. Thats the best way to highlight animal welfare issues

Paddington (RIP) was a manic depressive who later developed a serious heroin addiction.

Its more likely he was drugged.

Nothing (apart from child abuse) flips my bitchswitch like animal cruelty, but bad as Russia can be it's Disneyland compared to parts of the middle East.

Wait until you hear about this thing in Ireland called horse racing.

Huge crowds go along to cheer on thugs whippng horses to make them run faster than other horses that are being whipped.

Does be shown on the tv and all for the vermin that can’t get there to cheer on horses being whipped.

Big subsidies and all from the taxpayer.

And those who own these horses that are entered in these whipping races are deemed to be “respectable members of society”.
