No it will not. There is no EPG for UK TV.

All Linux boxes can pull XML files for all European providers so there is a UK EPG. There probably are right restrictions for saorview to use this so it will never happen. Simon will need to talk to Boris in Brexit negotiations to get this to work. 😉

Obviously Sam was saying there is no UK EPG on the Saorview connect box.

Two or three lines of code would sort that. Hold EPG on external hard drive. Not on connect box so maybe bypass right restrictions.

Saorview will never do that and they have measures in place to stop anyone else trying.

That is my understanding. RTE are very strong on abiding by rights issues.

Is this box still costing €200. If so is the price likely to drop anytime soon.

Would love to see sales figures on these. My guess is they have sold less than a couple of hundred boxes. They need to enable recording and half the price before my interest is peaked anyhow

There is only one box, imported by one importer and all sellers appear to be charging the one price.

There is no reason why a second box could not enter the market as there is no reason another manufacturer could not licence the required software as 2RN do not have any financial stake in it. (Or so I am led to believe). However, the interface involves Freesat and RTE player, so not an easy route to market.

Actually, I would be quite interested* in it if it had recording and an internal HDD, or even room for an internal HDD.

*I]I have no connection with RTE or Saorview or the importers of this box[/I.

I like the interface, and as a Freesat user I like familiarity of it. But more than price, it’s the lack of recording that kills it for me. It’s so rare that I watch a programme live these days. It’s such an 80s concept to me :D

Unlike e2 the Saorview Connect box is closed source firmware.

AFAIK no mainstream Linux box does this from the factory.

The software and setup to do this has to be added afterwards. And it needs a wee bit of tweaking from time to time.

Technically there is no problem getting the EPG, last time I checked very old SKY boxes exported it out the serial port, but 3rd party commercial receivers don't use them because neither UK EPG's are freely available.

Channel 4 HD has left the Freesat EPG. You can add it as an other channel on a Freesat box but you only get now/next even though it's EXACTLY the same as the SD version of the channel which has full EPG.

My Freesat Box will only show now/next on non-Freesat channels. It could show the full weekly Saorsat EPG (or RAI or German ones) but Freesat didn't want that.

Well whoever has the code can theoretically add what they like. They won't of course due to legal issues. C'est la vie!!

I’d buy it straight away if it had internal HDD.

I buy two if it also had UK freesat EPG also

U will also need to get an aerial to receive saorview. U would need to check where Ur local rte transmitter is located. This will determine whether u will need an external aerial or whether u can put one in Ur attic. This will cost u another €50 plus installation u less u can do it urself (Irish channels on sky are through dish). I will lose hd version of TV3 using saorview also.

I bought a great antanae in Fairyhouse market - seller there sells loads of them - only 15euros- it’s really compact about 20 cm rod about 2cm thick-on a flat magnetic base - and just left beside the tv it works perfectly picking up all had channels with no breakup. (Saorview built into tv)

Really interested in this Saorview Go now as I’d like get BBC - first I’ve heard of it so I suppose I have a long read of 50 pages of this thread ahead of me.... unless anyone would be so kind offer a summary of which box to look out for? Thanks!

BBC is available FTA on satellite, either through Freesat (with 7 day EPG) or just general FTA with now and next. BBC iPlayer is geo-blocked so no chance with an Irish broadband supplier.

Ah right- thanks - satellite dish is not an option for me where I live - hopefully someday we get a service like in the states where there are lots of channels to pickup without a dish.

Liking Saorview - we have one tv on Upc but don’t see need to pay for the other TVs- so want Saorview or something on them- just would be nice if it had bbc even if it was over internet.

You can get small compact sat dishes that work well except in bad weather conditions.
I had one clamped to a window cill for a time and it did what I needed.
(one of those small cheap Lidl ones :) )

If you have a south facing balcony you could try reversing the dish

or hide it under a cover

Also there are things like Slingboxes and Linux boxes that allow you to setup a dish in one place and watch it remotely.

There's a trade-in deal started on these now, whereby trading in your old STB will allow you €50 off the purchase price of the Connect, so buying it for €149

This sounds like desperation. I think the box is over priced at the 200 mark, so not surprising that they are not shifting.

I think the €200 price would be OK if it had an internal HDD. If it had a place for one to be installed, then perhaps it is a bit steep.

The recording facility is due in the next while - promised Q2, but we shall see. Saorview has been a constant source of disappointment so far, and I have yet to see it deviate from that.

With €50 discount for a STB, I might be tempted - particularly if recording was enabled.

If you were subscribed to newsletter from Saorview with the Saorview ID. You would have received an email to say that the connect boxes were to be sold at a reduced price during the Easter period from participating retailers from Saorview Connect. I got that notification from them weeks ago. I'm surprised that this has only been raised by now.

Many of the places selling these are selling TVs with Saorview Recorders built in.
Eg. The Samsung TVs have pause, rewind and scheduled recordings of Saorview built in(just add usb HD or USB key)

Ok they may be about 500 Euros for the tv but not a huge leap from 200 for the box alone with no recording.

The ability to add a satellite dish is a cool thing and has me interested- not 200 interested though... :)

I'm almost certain that was a separate offer (no trade in) and was mentioned here too.

The distributor is. It's possible all stockists aren't geared up and advertising it yet.

This is a new offer, and nothing to do with any Saorview Easter offer.

I think €149 is a step in the right direction, adding the recording feature would be the next decent step. Then perhaps adding TV3 Player.
