Car listed as limousine on tax book but it's not. Insurance now want to dump me

    I brought a Mercedes e 220 three years ago. It is an ordinary saloon with 5 doors but it was an embassy car used to ferry visitors around. It is listed as a limousine on the tax book as I assume that was done to avail of cheap tax. I have it insured with the same company with no problems for the last 3 years and now following an audit they are refusing to insure me as its a limousine!

    How do I change this on the tax book? I'm paying just under 400 a year on tax!!

    The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

    FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

    You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

    Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

    Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

    But I've been taxing it at 380 a year so at the normal rate despite the tax book stating it's a limo. So I'm not liable to back tax.

    A 2011 would have low tax anyway so I assume that's not it.

    In a German car brochure, the word for any saloon model (vs. coupe or estate) is 'limousine', it doesn't imply a long luxury model as it does in English.

    Here is a link to the Mercedes Germany page for the current C-class saloon which they call a 'limousine' .....

    Somebody in the embassy who registered the car probably wrote 'limousine' instead of 'saloon' in the model description.

    In which field of logbook does it say "Limousine" ?
    Is it D.3 ?

    And what is in your logbook if field J ? I'm guessing M1

    If you answer that, it will give us more light into your case.

    My dad bought one of those in 1990 brand new from a dealer, and it was described as Limousine.

    Ye, somethings not adding up here, limo taxi is AFAIK the same as taxi tax at €95 regardless of year. If you're paying the standard CO2 tax of €390 for the model then the car is not registered as a limo for motor tax.

    Than the car is not a limousine in legal sense of way.
    Field D.3 is just a description of body type, so might be saloon, estate, coupe, etc...

    Someone with very little brain must have entered this in your vehicle as limousine instead of saloon. But it makes no difference to vehicle VRT category, vehicle EU type category, and vehicle taxation class.

    M1 is just a regular passenger car, so there's completely no reason for your insurance to be making any trouble.


    Inventing own names in that D.3 field seems pretty commons, as I had Honda CRV, which as body type in D.3 had "Jeep".
    I was thinking what the hell. It's a honda not a jeep.
    And yes - I know in everyday language people call SUV's as Jeeps, but Jesus it shouldn't be ending up in a logbook.

    When I exported that car abroad and was registering it there, lady in the registration office couldn't believe her eyes, that body type was described as Jeep.


    I'd say your next move should be to contact your insruer, and explain them that your car is just a normal car, and it was just someone's fantasy Shannon or motortax office who entered body type as limousine.

    I've seen German manufacturers do this before. In the owners manual of a 01 passat I had, the body type was referred to as 'Passat Limousine' instead of saloon or sedan. Maybe that's where this originated?

    Anyway - tell your insurer it's a normal car. Insist that limousine in D.3 field is totally irrelevant.
