    Just on BOI.

I'm in the FS industry and, while taking this with a pinch of salt, have heard from a few different people that BOI have threatened to pull their sponsorship of Ulster as expected but have also threatened to pull out of Irish rugby entirely, including the other provinces

Their CEO is fairly forward thinking in terms of gender equality and stuff.

Yeah and so far she certainly doesn't seem timid when it comes to making big decisions either.

You’d be naive to think it wasn’t a factor.

I used to think the same until I had a conversation with a couple of people who worked in HR and employment law. As you said, off topic, but there's genuinely good reasons why quotas can and do work.

That rumour about BOI is huge though. And would force the IRFUs hand. There's no way they could afford to take that hit.

If the IRFU were to go against BOI and re-instate the lads, not only would it be a huge blow losing the money from BOI, but I'd imagine it'd be hard to get a replacement in for them. Not a lot of companies would be willing to announce a sponsorship with them under the circumstances.

More rotation at LH. Although Black has been our best No.1 this season. Glad to see O'Toole retained in the squad. Hopefully Kane can replicate O'Toole's carrying last week. I'd take O'Connor over Treadwell any day of the week. Not sure why Timoney has been benched. I guess it shows the high regard in which Reidy is held.

It's not that it's without merit. I understand the concept behind it, I just think it's better to allow things to correct themselves over a longer period of time than to force change through quotas. I think it's better to rectify issues with childcare, parental leave and parental roles than it is to say "x number of roles must be filled with gender y".

I think it devalues achievements of women most of all, and even though it rectifies the gender balance at an executive level in certain fields, it devalues those who got there without quotas.

Bringing it back on topic, should World Rugby demand now that 50% of referees in the pro14 are Women, or should the achievements of Joy Neville prove that if you are good enough, your gender doesn't matter?

if joy neville got her appointment through gender quotas then please redact the above...!

A cursory glance on Twitter and a lot of people messaging BOI and Vodafone threatening to close accounts/switch providers

    Mob out in force again.

I've seen this come up a few times, but in reality a company with previous bad PR needs to be doubly careful about things like this.

    If we're going OT.

She's a pretty good example of the case for gender quotas right? She has the stories of calling a friend of her and asking if he could ever imagine a woman reffing in the AIL and he said not in his lifetime.
Her story has, in a sense, become a glorious inversion of old-school thinking then. The very trigger that brought her here, a comment from someone she respects that a woman refereeing an AIL Division One game would not happen in their "lifetime", seems quaint to the point of innocence now.
    (Indo)

Fair play to Joy Neville for overcoming stupid gender obstacles to get to where she is, but how many good referees have we missed out on because they were put off by this sort of talk?

Yeah I totally agree. I just don't know how I feel about them effectively threatening a national sporting body in the way that they are.

There are quite a few slippery slopes on display through this entire saga.

    Twitter talk is very cheap

We read just after the trial how many people were going to rescind/not buy their season tickets for Ulster if PJ & SO played for Ulster again

A week ago Ulster reported they hadn't had a single letter from their season ticket holders threatening to do so

Maybe loads, maybe none? How many women want to become referees?

How many good referees would we lose if we decided tomorrow that gender was the first deciding factor for qualification and ability was subordinated to second?

We now know that in the physical, male dominated cauldron of professional rugby, that women are capable of refereeing a game to a high standard. Many presumed this to be the case but now we know.

If Joy was appointed to satisfy a quota, she is one bad game away from being completely undermined in her position.

Protest now planned for before the game.

    https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/feminist-group-to-protest-at-kingspan-ulster-v-ospreys-game-36799042.html

Saw on twitter that a group in Dublin are arranging busses to head up also.

If anyone is heading I'd say get there early enough, given the content of the protests might not be the best environment for kids either.

That was the URSC statement, not Ulster rugby.

Free market innit. A company does or supports something you don't agree with, you're free to take your business elsewhere. That's capitalism, baby.
