Mary Magdelene the film

There is a new film in the cinema this week: Mary Magdelene.

At the end it stated that:
Mary Magdelene was incorrectly called a prostitute, and that the vatican have officially uplifted her status to 'apostle' in 2016, and given her a feast day.

Why was this not bigger news? I think that alot of the appalling treatment of women in Ireland, resulted from the Catholic Church incorrectly referring to women as prostitutes, evil, worthless etc.

The Catholic Church themselves have now said that this was incorrect and twisted, and have agreed that most accounts of Mary Magdelene say that she was a close advisor of Jesus, and they have officially upgraded her status to 'apostle of apostles'.
The vatican have released a press release on this.

I just spoke to yet another Irish woman who spoke of being sexually abused as a child. She described Ireland as 'a country of serial sex abuse'. Many Irish women of my generation had abusive childhoods.

I think one day Ireland will look back and be greatly shamed of its treatment of thousands of women.
Is this the end of the abuse of women in Ireland?

Why would it be big news that someone who is dead for 2 thousand years was given a feast day?

    This is old news?

Wasnt 'Mary at the well' the lady of the night, while Mary Mags was the 'Apostle of Apostles'

She was seen as better than all of Jesus's apostles (most of the women were).

She does seem to have suffered a fair bit of character assassination though.

Not if the traditionalists have anything to say about it.

Because people don't give a **** about religion any more.

Also, the Catholic church don't like highlighting having to make changes to things when it's akin to admitting being wrong.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I doubt it'd be only Ireland looking back with shame.

I think things have improved but it will never be the end, sadly.

Ask the Pope if you can see Mary Magdelene's gospel. It one of several apparently locked in the Vatican vaults.

Why is prostitution viewed so badly anyway? Especially by a Church which styles itself as charitable? Surely as long as the price isn't too high, it's sort of a form of charity work for the hideously ugly?

Probably because married men indulge in hiring prostitutes therefore breaking the sixth commandment.

And ultimately destabilising the marriage and the basic unit of society which is the family. Back then there was no social welfare, no enforced child support, no means for a woman to take care of children of a marriage if it didn't work out and a father left. Forming a relationship with another woman was probably a huge threat. It had to be socially frowned upon in order to keep everything running ok.

Considering they had no contraception back then I wonder if prostitutes got pregnant alot and how all that worked.

I thought they were free and easy around that time.
    Bisexuality was the norm.

She was also the only apostle to be present at the crucifixion, the lads all being too chicken to show up (or rooster, in Peter's case ;)).
Not to mention that the apostles were ready to jack it all in and go back to the day jobs after Jesus was killed until she gave them a good kick up the arse.

Ok so they got it wrong - MM was considered by Christ as an apostle....

Here's the official blurb on it ...
Mary Magdalene, apostle of the apostles,

Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her'. In this way she becomes, as is already known, an evangelist, or rather a messenger who announces the good news of the resurrection of the Lord; or, as Rabano Mauro and St. Thomas Aquinas said, 'apostolorum apostola', as she announces to the apostles what they in turn will announce to all the world

...It is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman should have the same level of festivity given to the apostles in the General Roman Calendar,

Kind blows this out of the water then :D
Why can only men be ordained as priests?

Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter Mulieris Dignitatemstated, “In calling only men as his apostles, Christ acted in a completely free and sovereign manner. ...”

    Right so...

Somebody who didn't exist, who was pally with another makey-up fella, who had "Super-powers" and was the Son Of God but his mother was a virgin because sex is nasty... Is now NOT a prostitute because the men in dresses decided that the other men in dresses who made this whole thing up, made it up wrongly.. so the current spoofers are remaking it all up and she is now a lovley lady...NOT a prostitute... because that is bad,

    All clear now?

My friend's Dad was in the Navy and not really into religion, his family were so he read as many books of the Bible as he could his summary was always:

"Lads he was either shagging Mary Magdalene or the lads"

No. Not an apostle but more than was attributed at the start. And read Acts.

Jesus consistently treated women very differentlly from men. As is right as we are different. Just as vital and important but yes different.

By the way all the "forbidden gospels" are online; google?

Missing the point by several miles.

It's about how women are treated by the church.
It being real or not is irrelevant.

The male apostles didn't like her (especially Peter, who was a thick bully by all accounts) for basically two reasons.
1 She was much smarter than them and used to show them up at question time with Jesus.
2 The fact that Jesus spent more time with her than them, and used to kiss her on the mouth in front of them (wahey!)

    Fixed quotes above

Yes - as quoted the "Apostles apostle" ... ;)
apostolorum apostola', as she announces to the apostles what they in turn will announce to all the world
Vatican Press release Mary Magdalene 2016

The church created the role of priest - not god or jesus

Many religions have absolutely no problem with women's ministry in religion. Looks like it's going that way here imo ....

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that only men can receive holy orders because Jesus chose men as his apostles, and the "apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry." Pope John Paul 1994
