This is not news. All car rental bookings lay out the costs/day. Also booking for the Christmas period is the most expensive time of year.

Sounds like he paid for the excess reduction which is also a per day cost.

Also if he had any sense (unlikely) some of the better car hire companies (Enterprise and Sixt) will allow you to prepay all those things (usually at a discount)
