Will 2-3 degrees be enough to thaw pipes that have been frozen since Tuesday night with snow on top of them?

Best knock off the snow and let whatever bit of heat in in the air or rain get directly to the pipes, if you can do it safely.

I don't live on the farm and tried driving out today but got stuck. Neighbour has cattle in the yard with mine so he's feeding for me. I reckon that by 11 the roads should be well improved.

Some scumbags in Dublin re Lidl

-2 now again and light snow.
90cm was the deepest drift I measured on our lane, managed to plough through it with the Tiguan on way out.

We’ve been spared the worst of the snow which I’m glad of. Had a great time sledding with the kids, stock happy and although drinkers frozen the fact that we have tank of water in the shed it was simple enough to get drinks to them.

Eldest is mad to get back to the pool to train, 3 days now without a swim.

Anyone see the footage of the digger being stolen up in Dublin. Scumbags destroyed a roof on Lidl. In Tallaght, I think.

`Did ye end up with much snow after?

That's our yard entrance. Photo doesn't really show how much snow is really there but there is going to be a lot of moving in it. There's 5ft drifts on some roads we traveled today

I’m down under at the minute. Heard from the auld fella at home we’ve lost 40 ewes and about 60 lambs in a drift. Really Dreadful stuff

M.T. Cranium,s Update from the Weather Forum

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly overcast with some fog developing over heavier snow packs, light sleet or snow at times this morning in a few locations, followed by an interval of rain near the southeast coasts, making some progress inland and upslope but turning to sleet or snow over higher parts of the southeast. This may also make sporadic appearances further north and west although not likely to be much of a factor in Connacht or Ulster where occasional outbreaks of sleety light showers may continue. In general, somewhat milder with highs 4 to 7 C at low elevations, and 2 to 4 C over higher and more inland districts (-1 to 2 C on higher slopes). Snow melt will be gradual and mostly confined to coastal margins, and some urban areas, leading to some ponding of meltwater by afternoon and evening there. Winds generally lighter than recent days but occasionally moderate easterly in Leinster, and there could be one or two weak streamers setting up at times, bringing more of a mixed bag of precipitation types. Where safe and possible to do, clear snow off flat roof surfaces to avoid later problems.

TONIGHT ... Sleet or wet snow at times in the east may begin to deposit new snow inland and on higher ground, but generally slight accumulations. Foggy especially over higher terrain and snow packs. Rather cold in the north especially in any clearing spells, lows -5 to -2 there, otherwise -1 to +2 C.

SUNDAY ... The slow thaw will continue to gain momentum with a slight increase in temperatures to 5 to 8 C near sea level and 2 to 5 C inland and on some higher slopes. Snow melt while not dramatic will be steady and urban ponding issues will increase. Slush and standing water will be on the increase and some light rain or sleet at times will add to this. A few sunny breaks are possible over west and north.

OUTLOOK ... For most of the week, similar conditions to the weekend will continue with a slow but steady thaw gradually reducing the snow packs and isolating the remnants to the worst hit areas in central Leinster and higher ground generally. There will be occasional outbreaks of sleet, wet snow or light rain each day, and some icing at night with any clear intervals. Lows will be in the range of -3 to +3 C and highs in the range of 4 to 9 C. A heavier rainfall could develop later in the week although some guidance takes that disturbance far enough east that it might lead to a northerly return of cold air for a day or two and snowfall potential, so that part of the forecast remains quite uncertain (around Thursday-Friday). There is no guarantee that the cold air will stay away permanently once flushed out this weekend, but the pattern appears to be slowly changing to a cool maritime southwesterly flow with the colder air now confined to northern latitudes and the western half of the Atlantic (upper level steering features have moved west, or undergone "retrogression.")

I don't know how much it was but I thought it was finished for snow yesterday evening.
Snowing again here now. Could do with warm rain at this stage to wash it all away.

Snow in 2010 lasted nearly a month, but it was december.
When it eventually thawed there was a huge incidence of pneumonia in sheds.
I was visiting a farmer on the day it thawed (St Stepehens day) and he had 20% of one shed affected

    Yes and no
Current spell should ease significantly in the next few day, snow falling should turn to rain
But because there is no vortex over the pole and that takes a few weeks to rebuild, there’s a risk of another polar outbreak from all that displaced artic air

Meantime folks make sure if you have piles of snow in the yard from clearing or drifts near the yard that the potential melt from this if it’s clean snow or mostly clean is not going to your tanks or they will fill or flood rapidly

I managed to get into the town last night for 2 delicious pints of Heineken after a long long day,a neighbor collected me on one of the main roads,I had to walk to there but worth it
Pub was packed with drunk people,we were asking were they there since yesterday:p

The weather forum is like a junior b team full of oldies that were good ballers once upon a time and are all living on past glories of the good old days. They prepare as best as possible but go out and inevitably get bet by 17 points. Come in sit in dressing room, look around at each other and wonder how and why things didnt go the way they predicted.
If you're going to be wrong, you may as well do it right.
