No deduction to their annual leave, not their fault.
Yep working from home is great....get a lot more done with no distractions!

daughter's been working last eight days straight, today was supposed to be her day off and she arrived up to me earlier all bright eyed and bushy tailed wanting to go snow treking and as soon as she got home she got a call from work asking could she come because other staff members wanted to leave early to avoid worsening weather. She just sat down and cried. To top it off they called her this evening telling her she would be manning the place by herself tomorrow til three.

So she agreed to work extra tomorrow? She could have said no

No work today and found out we are closed until Monday. Needed a break.

Have to laugh at some of the passive aggressive little comments on here. The world won’t end if we don’t go to work.

Rang my local around 9 to see if they were open and they were. When I asked the barman on the phone if any other regulars were in he said 'it's me, just me'. I didn't bother going out.
I think it's wrong that the owner stayed open, the cost alone but letting that barman walk home alone around midnight is wrong

That is bad form, especially when it’s obvious when no one is showing up after an hour or so

So if we drive in fore-warned un-safe conditions are we covered by our Insurance or what's the craiceáilte.... Or is it just more scare-mongering...

It depends on the company and the policy. I'm TPFT with Liberty and I'm fully insured to drive. My cousin on the other hand is with Cross and she's not insured if there's a red warning in place.

Not sure about Friday, if we lose power in this bloody storm we'll have to stay home.

Babies will still be born so I'll be working full hours through til Saturday afternoon.

Fair play to you. Same goes for all Gardai, Nurses, Medical personnel, Fire fighters who just simply have to be there. Also kudos to hotel staff who are nearly always left out of the thanks in these situations, they're always working on Xmas Day and New Years Eve too but rarely get recognition. So any hospitality workers, fair play to you. Working in the prison system myself (which I guess is hospitality!) and we have to be in too.

    +1

Got in today late in the afternoon, but managed to finish everything by 9:30

I was told that if things go wrong I can have a room in the hotel nearby paid for.

I work in food and retail and both us and the hospitality business don't get the recognition for what happens in the background in the events like this.

It was the busiest day not only this year, it was busier than Christmas week last year....

Also, in relation to the hospitality sector, particularly hotel workers, they deserve recognition for providing emergency accommodation to essential workers - I know essential medical staff in the hospital I work in are staying in a hotel just down the road and the hotel workers are doing quick turnarounds of rooms for the different shifts and ensuring everyone has plenty of food and toiletries.

I left work yesterday at 3 and am off until Monday. I cancelled all my appointments for the rest of the week and put a detailed voicemail message on my phone before I left yesterday just in case I couldn't get in today or tomorrow so I'm covered.

So what kind of Siberian conditions do you guys have to face? -2 and 3 cm of snow?
Been -10 here for weeks and yesterday it dipped to -20. Workwise there has been no difference.
Winter tires are essential though. I'd say that would be the one and only reason Ireland grinds to a halt.

Not sure what you mean by "Siberian conditions". It was -5 this morning, feels like -12. It's the coldest weather I've ever experienced. We have a lovely blanket of snow, 2-3 inches where I am.

A red alert basically means don't be out of the house unnecessarily so I'm taking that advice.

I've to head in myself this morning. God knows when we'll get out or where we'll be sent but the boss has a real "sure it's only a bit of weather, just take it handy" attitude to it all.

Me too hopefully it is a half day.

I worked for a horrible pig like that before. Once everyone got into work, she didn't care how anyone got home. There was no leaving early to beat the worst weather, instead she'd force everyone to stay in the hopes we'd get stuck for a few hours. If we got stranded because of the weather (which happened twice during the 5 years I worked there) she was delighted putting us all to work for hours which we didn't even get paid for.

I'm due in today, we had to work late last night, and if I don't go in, I don't get paid, simples.....

Considering not going in, having car trouble and himself drove me in yesterday, is a 40 minutes drive each way, and if he drives me in, he'll have to collect me in a few hours, if it was my choice I'd go in, but it's not.

I'm living rural, we got a bit of snow that even made driving unpleasant in his 4 X 4, that would add to me staying put.

To be honest, I really don't think he's horrible about it, he just can't comprehend that it's such a big problem. I know a couple of other people like that too, an Uncle of mine would be the very same.

I did work for ones before who definitely would have been pigs about it. I remember one manager going around in a 4x4 and picking up people for a night shift in real bad snow and then in the morning at home time he told them it was a one way ticket and to make their own arrangements for getting home. Absolute prick at the best of times though.

Only that you mention night shift and that the manager was a man, I'd swear we were talking about the same person. She organised 4x4s to go around picking up staff, it took about 3 hours to collect everyone. We all didn't get in until half 11, then come 5pm, finishing time, she was insisting we make up the hours missed in the morning so we all had to stay until nearly 8pm as we all had no other way to get home anyway.

Or the fact we get this type of weather once every 15 years or so. It's not a regular occurrence here whatsoever, unlike in Siberia.

    Happy with that.

I guess and hope most people will have day off today, too.
