The countries who have regular deep snow are a completely different matter . They invest money in the equipment and staff to clear the snow . We get snow maybe once every five years and it would simply not be economical for us to do the same .

I don't know why I got such sarcastic/defensive replies to my post. I'm aware as to why our country isn't as well prepared as others.

I'm off until Monday. I was so happy that i got three free days off that I stayed in bed until 11.30.

I'll be eating curries and gambling like a mad yoke

My wife is Slovak, and I would agree. But they are used to it and the country is prepped for it. Roads get cleared regularly, people are responsible for the foot paths outside their property so they clear those areas, and snow tires used on cars etc.

It’s hard to get roads gritted here in cold weather.

Ah yeah I understand why we're not as prepared as they are. It was just funny that I was all enchanted with the little bit of snow and the weather drama since it's so rare.. And she's there clocking much lower temps and deeper snow regularly haha!

The other poster I quoted was sarcastic. If you didn't intend to come across as defensive then I apologise.

No problem ! I lived in Berlin and they were so efficient in snow fall . But one huge advantage was the underground system . The bin lorries converted to snow ploughs , everyone was legally bound to clear the path in front of their home or business . Staff were quickly transfered from parks etc into snow clearing . Medical staff were brought in by the army if need be etc . No wonder it all flowed !
The fact people knew that things would flow and shops stay open etc also stopped the stock piling and businesses closing . The efficiency of the city councils had a knock affect on everything

Tesco last night, all the spuds were gone.

Off until Monday. Delighted. Are any pubs open tonight? I'm in D12 in Dublin. Need something to do with all this free time. :D

We go there every winter, and I love the snow. But for some reason i have enjoyed it here today even more. The whole drama around it has made it so enjoyable. The whole estate is out throwing snowballs and making snowmen (and snow women). People that you don’t see from one end of the year to the other are all out interacting.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

I'm guessing a lot of places are also closing up due to the fear of being sued by people "falling".

Trains are running all day, so in theory, no reason we couldn't have gone to the office, but as a red alert was issued, the company sent out an email.

I'd say Irish Rail are happy, as they won't have to deal with the claims if people stay at home!

I really don't think people are thinking of claiming all the time and it is not a reason for Irish Rail to run trains today but hope nobody is on them.

Galway City is sunny and dry. Not a flake of snow and no breeze at all. Feels weird to be honest.

Not sure what was worse; the ridiculousness of the empty spud and bread shelves, or the forlorn looking aul' wans who couldn't cope beyond "mate an spuds"

Cat looking out the French Doors at the snow fall, I opened the door and beckoned him out, but a sharp gust of wind came and he went running back into the sitting room.

I find him curled in a ball on the sofa don't blame him, blazing fire -very cozy
