Our local authority bought brand new snow ploughs after the 2010 snow, they've been in storage since so looking like they'll finally get a run out.

    Battery charging at the moment

My only concern is for the electricity going out. Is that a possibility?

Care for my dad and wondering if I need to get a camping stove. Have his electric bed sorted (thanks to a kind boardsie who told me what to do), have back boiler and just run the hot water off to stop it busting. Carer’s come in 3 times a day but I’ll manage without them so they can deal with people who are on their own.

Am I taking all this too seriously?

Are there any traditional forecast sites predicting what's being talked about here?

I've checked a few and I don't see any mention of snow or indeed even any particularly cold weather for next week.

For instance - the met office

It's obvious from reading this that none of you have had the joy of trying to feed cattle in the snow

Indeed, I have always found the cheerleading and enthusiasm for bad weather on these boards a little disquieting.

This weather, if it happens, will being misery and danger to many people.

and joy and merriment to many others....

snow is a novelty in Ireland and for many it brings out the inner child. It never lasts that long.

GFS seems to have backed off a bit (or slowed down) on this run.

Edit (seems like it slowed down)

..and it doesn't matter what we hope for anyway, nature will do its own thing

And endless damp mild overcast weather brings misery to many other people.

I suppose it is good though in the sense that those of us living remotely do stock up when we see these threads. Coal and food and gas, and so on. And it does look lovely, and there is peace to be found in it - the retreat to the cave, the general hush. The loss of earnings though, is a troublesome and stressful part of being snowed in. Still, nature will do what she wants, and I am glad of the fore-warning.

And sped right back up! -12 850 hPa from Scotland to northern France to Cork, that is a fascinating chart...

In 1991,in Wales, my gas bottles got too cold to function. Keep this in mind as most cookers on bottles gas have the bottles outside. I'm off to buy a new hot water bottle

Ireland doesn't deal we'll with cold. Heavy snow is a rare event. As the saying goes "fail to prepare, prepare to fail".
Make the necessary preparations and you should be ok.
I've a mate from NE of the states and as soon as snow starts, anyone with a truck sticks on a snowplough and I the roads are cleared. Even bin lorries have them.
Another thing from 2010 that I remember was people not clearing snow and ice from outside their homes and businesses because the notion got round that if someone fell there you could be sued as you "interfered with the nature of the surface". This left footpaths in a lethal condition.
Myself and some neighbours cleared the snow from our paths and a lot of the road, one fella stood in his door looking at us and said it was too cold to help so we left his uncleared and didn't bother to help as he slid his BMW all over the street before abandoning it.
If we do get the heavy snow that's predicted, just look after the more vulnerable folk, even if it's just bringing in a bucket of coal for them.

Not to get too philosophical about it, but there's nothing like unusually severe weather to burst your little personal bubble and remind you that you're living on a wild and wonderful planet.

There can be more of a sense of togetherness at times like these too, something that is lacking for many these days.

I don't think anyone is excited about the misery, quite the opposite in fact.

I remember the 2010 event that M.T. Cranium so accurately predicted. I was standing in 53 Degrees North, two weeks before it was due, puzzling over which tobaggan type to buy and the look I got from the staff member when I said "some guy on the internet says it's going to snow". :D

You'd want lighter winds and lower pressure for high snow totals, it's impossible to gauge what would actually happen in that setup this far out but my best guess would be light and fast moving streamers that vary in location frequently with small shifts in wind. Temperatures +2 to -1C by day and around -3 to -6C overnight. Windchill would be the main feature.

Interesting but still the best part of a week away, gonna be a long wait

Yr.no for my location in FI is saying 12mm of precipitation to fall as snow on Thursday week and the highs to reach -1c and lows of -4c.

Kilkenny especially the higher ground usually does well from the an easterly. It was always something my father dreaded, but he was around for 1947 and the experience of that I think both haunted and fascinated him. There was no electricity and no heating like we have now, and food was still rationed after the war.

At the moment it is important to keep informed and be prepared as we get closer and with details in a more reliable time frame. I did tell family about the possibilities and all one can do is wait and see, then prepare as necessary.

weather is the weather. if u like cold and snow or mild and wet or hot and sunny. People cannot be made feel bad for hoping for the type of weather they prefer.
All the hoping in the world won't make it snow just coz I want it to. so for the people giving out about other people wanting it to snow, please stop the stupidity of what your saying.
Also can we get back to talking about the weather and not about the the cattle or hardships.
