Hate speech is a term that has been utilized by aggressive totalitarians in an attempt to silence other people. There's no such thing. There are perfectly good laws covering harassment and incitement to violence.

Could you give an example when hate speech laws were used to silence someone? Its very rarely used as far as I can tell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 790 ✭✭✭LaChatteGitane

It's very subjective. I'm sure some little totalitarian would have a field day censoring all sorts of opinions.

    Subjective, my behind.

    From merriam webster
    "Legal Definition of hate speech
: speech that is intended to insult, offend, or intimidate a person because of some trait (as race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability)"

I said some people have 'attempted' to silence people. Thankfully, the police realize that the law is unworkable in a free society.

It's completely subjective and unworkable. If a Conservative commentator says he thinks homosexuality is immoral, is that so-called 'hate speech'?

Clearly not since they say it all the time.

Did you watch the Milo video's about the trans student?

It probably is, for people without a moral compass. Sigh

Yup. In the past, anything goes, but now they're banning most debates as the SJW version of the Hitler Youth is now shutting down everything that they don't like, without seeing the irony.

    IMO, it's stupid.

Apologies, I didn't realise your first comment was ironic. Yes, spot on.

    What debates have been banned?

This sort of obnoxious attitude extends to other areas too. Many universities are taking books off of syllabuses because they contain stories that might "trigger" students.

Restrictions on free speech extend everywhere. Two posts were deleted from this thread for repeating what a person even says about himself.
Claiming that any policy regarding guests is a violation of free speech is the type of hysterical rhetoric Spiked online specialises in.

Free speech now = nazism, that is one hell of a perversion of history and facts.

Yourself and DickSwiveller have heads on your shoulders, but a lot of people don't. David Irving (Fascist and Holocaust denier) was going to speak at NUIG for a debate, but AFAIK, this was cancelled due to "security concerns".

That was back in 2009. Since then, SJW's became a thing to be reckoned with, and now universities seem to be afraid of getting the wrong person in, in case they get mobbed by SJW's, whom you can't arrest, or you become the "bad person", and get a load of international bad press (and get less funding that international students bring in).

No that's not the point being made. If one is for totally free speech the should nazi's be allowed a platform? Everyone has a limit about what they wouldn't allow.

That's not an opinion, it's enabling illegal activity. It's like me giving a talk on how to hack AIB bank accounts.

Genocide is illegal last time I checked.
Does your workplace have a code of conduct?
    Why shouldn't universities.

I'm not saying there are opinions or beliefs that should not be allowed be expressed, just that universities are not obliged to host them or give them a platform. Students should also be allowed to protest them if they want to.

Presumably there was an ATM-hacking spree after this. I can't watch the video at the moment so I can't comment on it.

On to your latter point.. well, strawman, I never said that at all. Have you read my posts on this thread at all? I don't agree with no platforming but Universities have the right to invite whomever they please. It's their platform, their property and their responsibility.

Yup hence the historical need for free speech because people governments took it upon themselves to impose those limitations and pretty much without exception abused those powers. Hence progressives or enlightened thinkers saw the need for a philosophical and political principle that simple said no you can t limit what people say. Actions yes but words no. Prosecuting the former is based on objective fact he either hit you or did not, the latter is based on subjective opinion and far more susceptible to concept creep which is what we are seeing now.

No one is saying they can't protest, difference between protesting and then taking action to shut down an event. But i have stated Irish university administration are not on side with the no platform crew thankfully. Trinity admin has come out strongly against it like when they told students to put up or get out last year after the israeli ambassadors visit.
