Yeah..that's exactly the kind of blind boy/bandits output that I would consider the opposite of funny..

Each to their own i guess.

Is it jealousy or a begrudgery at work here? I can guarantee he has done more for mental health in Ireland than you have and yet you see a problem with him speaking about it.

Ah the oul Irish fallback, begrudgery.

What, in quantifiable terms, has he done for mental health in Ireland? You've made the claim, now back it up.

There are lots of famous people talking about mental health at the moment, how come I am not "jealous" or begrudging of them?

To be honest your just coming across as a bit simple & stubborn at this stage, are you really so close minded that you can't accept some people find his take on things interesting & helpful? And I don't mean in a professional psychoanalysis way before you say how dangerous his opinion is, I mean in a personal experience way.

For someone who doesn't seem to think much of him you have an awful lot to say in a thread about him!

is it because, and this is just a hunch, he mentioned feminism? Like a red rag to a bull for a lot of people.

I'd say it's obvious that he's helped people from responses to his podcasts, book etc:

'Any human being would benefit from listening. Enjoy.'

'I look forward to hearing you every week and honestly do look at things in a more positive way after listening. '

'To be upfront and honest, I was expecting this podcast to be entertaining.. and it is. But what I wasn’t expecting was it to be so educational, thought provoking and warming.'

'In today’s f’d-up, non-stop, in-your-face, soylent green world, Blind Boy’s humor and knack for breaking things down to their most rudimentary elements in order to better understand is a much needed and liberating breath of fresh air. Step outside the fast lane, have a listen (and a laugh), exhale, and bask in a little introspection.'

Well this isnt a thread about them, so would be a bit odd you going off on them here.

With regards to what he has done, a simple twitter search for 'blindboy mental health' indicates at a very basic level that hundreds of people appreciate his raising mental health as a topic for discussion and find value in him doing so.

But by all means, dont look into it youself. Asks other to do it for you; despite the fact you have your mind made up already.

I've given my opinion on what I think he has done for mental health in this thread before. Feel free to go back and find it.

So you are full of it, making nonsensical statements, i.e. "I can guarantee he's done more for mental health....." then back peddle furiously to, its my opinion when called out on it and asked to show what he's actually done for mental health.

if people respond to his work saying it helped them, is that not enough? your rhetoric is what is nonsensical - back peddling furiously? Hardly.

Do you have anything to add to the thread Weldi?

I dont think you are anti mental health? I just think you are anti BB?

Im waiting to hear why you think him using whatever profile he has to get people talking about their mental health is a bad thing?

Or do you just not like him on the LLS?

I didn't "back peddle", I just stated that I have already posted what I think he has done for mental health. I'm not going to post it again.

And yes I do guarantee that he has done more for mental health in this country than you have.

Its because he has a bag on his head, plain and simple.

It's a legitimate position to take issue with him wearing a bag and being in character for serious topics, if you feel they should be handled more solemnly. But I think it's a contradiction to also say he's a conformist mouthpiece, while essentially taking issue with him refusing to conform.

I dont pay any attention to what he's wearing, it's the words coming out of his mouth I'm more interested in. If Barack Obama one day decided to wear something ridiculous, it wouldn't affect his ability as a public speaker.

    Huh?

I meant the other poster basically won't listen to BB and it's solely down to the bag.

You guaranteed he'd done more for mental health than me. Now you won't back that up, and want me to go trawling through the thread for something you said god knows how long ago, and it won't be proof of anything he's done, it'll be your opinion.:rolleyes:

I've been adding to the thread all morning. I'm anti snake oil salesmen using a serious subject as a cash cow. I did a bit of trawling there online and much like Bressie, you can see BB's condition go from "anxiety and agoraphobia" in his early years chatting about it, to a "dark depression" in later chats as he realises that he can make a few $$$ off it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Yeah I'm asking you going to add anything else or just repeat the same contribution.

Multiple mental health issues..... but...but....that's just not possible......!

How is he using it as a cash cow? Mental health is just one of the plethora of topics he discusses - his book is fiction & he's entitled to every penny he makes from it. It's not like he's going around charging for conferences on mental health or even espousing a particular brand of treatment. Where is the snake oil?

Are you of the belief that RTE do not pay him to be on the LLS, Tubridy radio show or Tommy Tiernan show????

No of course I'm not. He's invited on as a guest and he goes. What's the problem?

Because you're blatantly a nobody giving out about someone who is doing what he can while he is in the limelight to get people, men in particular, to talk about things they wouldn't have spoken about previously. These are facts, if you would like to prove me wrong about you and your stature in the mental health community in Ireland I'm all ears.

There's this new-fangled thingymabob called Google, it's fantastic!

Wow, your smart arse move has really opened my eyes.

After seeing that I now know that Dave Chanmbers has spoken about mental health on RTE. Which is what we were discussing in the first place. Gold star.

Okay, here's one for you. In the last few months, I've been incredibly depressed and anxious. Friend recommended to me that I should give a listen to one of the episode of his podcast where he discussed his mental health issues and to be honest, it helped a lot. He discussed how he learned to cope and I just found it very relatable.

I've since gone back to counselling but listening to other people's experiences has definitely been beneficial. I'd agree with you that he's a snake oil salesman if he was offering or plugging questionable treatments for mental health issues but he isn't.

Being open about mental health is beneficial and it's an area that he's clearly passionate about. I also know other people who find such openness beneficial.

And how many times has he been on the LLS spouting his non-comedy, non-musical waffle since, given that "he’s primarily a comedian and secondarily a musician"??

Once. He was on once alone.
