    Curfew
Game of Thrones star Sean Bean and Roots star Malachi Kirby are among the big names attached to Sky’s Fast and the Furious-style drama Curfew as the British broadcaster continues to drip out programming announcements.

The eight-part drama, which follows the story of ordinary people competing in the world’s fastest, most furious, illegal night-time street race, is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions and Moonage Picturs, the indie set up by Peaky Blinders execs Will Gould, Matthew Read and Frith Tiplady.

The series, which was written by Read, will see contestants race through the night from London to Scotland in their “pimped-out” vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

Adrian Lester (Riviera), Phoebe Fox (Blue Iguana) Robert Glenister (Spooks), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Troy: Fall of a City), Rose Williams (Reign), Elijah Rowen (Vikings) and Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen) also star in the series, directed by Peaky Blinders’ Colm McCarthy.

Commissioned by Sky’s Head of Drama Anne Mensah, the series will air on Sky One and will be exec produced by Gould and Tiplady. Sky Vision will distribute internationally.

    Catherine The Great

Helen Mirren To Star In ‘Catherine The Great Miniseries For HBO & Sky
Four-part HBO/Sky miniseries Catherine the Great is set to begin filming later this year, with Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) in the titular role.

Mirren also executive produces the project, written by Nigel Williams (Elizabeth I, Wodehouse in Exile) and directed by BAFTA and Emmy-winning Philip Martin (The Crown, Mo, Prime Suspect)

Catherine the Great delves into the politically tumultuous and sexually charged court of the most powerful female monarch in history. Catherine wielded supreme power throughout Russia for nearly half of the 18th century – strong-minded, independent, brilliantly intelligent and sexually liberated, she was the definition of the modern woman.

The miniseries, produced by Origin Pictures and New Pictures, will follow Catherine towards the end of her reign and her passionate affair with Grigory Potemkin. Amid scandal, intrigue and immense conflict, this is a story of obsessive love. Unable to publicly marry and famously promiscuous, they develop a unique and devoted relationship, overcoming their adversaries and together shaping Russia as we know it today.

The project originated with Mirren who approached Origin Pictures with the idea for Catherine the Great when she was working on the company’s Woman in Gold, saying it’s a part she’d always wanted to play.

“I am very excited by the possibility of embodying a woman from history who grabbed and then wielded great power,” Mirren said. “She rewrote the rules of governance by a woman, and succeeded to the extent of having the word Great attached to her name, Catherine the Great.

Catherine the Great, produced by Origin Pictures and New Pictures, will air on HBO in the U.S. and be distributed to Canada through its output deal with Bell Media. It will air on Sky Atlantic and TV streaming service NOW TV in the UK and Ireland next year, and on Sky Atlantic in Italy, Germany, Austria and Sky’s recently launched service in Spain.

Any excuse to post the theme.

    ABC picks up the pilot.
ABC is moving forward with its female-driven reboot of The Greatest American Hero.

The Disney-owned network has handed out a formal pilot order to the single-camera, half-hour comedy that follows Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, Ohio, whose talents include drinking tequila, singing karaoke and not much else.

Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom penned the pilot and executive produces alongside FOTB showrunner/creator Nahnatchka Khan; her producing partner, Mandy Summers; and original series creator Stephen J. Cannell's daughter, TV director Tawnia McKiernan (Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods). The project hails from 20th Century Fox Television, where Khan's Fierce Baby banner is based, which will co-produce the potential series alongside ABC Studios as co-productions continue to be a big trend this pilot season.

    Demimonde

J.J. Abrams Sci-Fi Drama 'Demimonde' Lands at HBO With Series Pickup
The drama marks the first TV show the prolific producer has written since 'Fringe.'

J.J. Abrams is expanding his relationship with HBO.

Following a bidding war with Apple, the premium cable network has landed the first TV series that the prolific producer has written since 2008's Fringe. HBO has handed out a straight-to-series order for Demimonde, expanding its relationship with Westworld exec producer Abrams. An episode count has not yet been determined.

Shopped as a spec script, sources say the Abrams drama is about a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world's battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world. HBO is only describing the series as "an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama."

Sources note that Abrams was impressed with what the premium cable network did with Westworld, making HBO the front-runner for the series over deep-pocketed rival Apple.

Abrams, who created/co-created Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe, penned the script and exec produces via his Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot Productions banner topper Ben Stephenson. In addition to exec producing Westworld, Abrams and his Bad Robot banner also serve in the same capacity on Lovecraft Country, a straight-to-series anthological horror drama from Jordan Peele and Misha Green.

CBS is developing a TV adaptation of L.A Confidential.
Based on James Ellroy’s classic novel of the same name, the series would follow the paths of three homicide detectives, a female reporter, and a Hollywood actress as they intersect while the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer through the seedy underbelly of 1950’s Los Angeles.

New Regency, Lionsgate Television and CBS Television Studios will produce, with New Regency’s Arnon Milchan serving as executive producer. Jordan Harper is set to write and executive produce.

    Gone Baby Gone
Fox television has ordered a pilot for “Gone Baby Gone,” which of course will be based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. None of the creative team from the movie will be involved, with Robert Levine (“Black Sails“) writing and executive producing, while Lehane will also take an EP credit. Here’s the synopsis of the film to bring you back up to speed, if you’re a bit hazy on the details:

When 4-year-old Amanda McCready disappears from her home and the police make little headway in solving the case, the girl’s aunt, Beatrice McCready hires two private detectives, Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. The detectives freely admit that they have little experience with this type of case, but the family wants them for two reasons – they’re not cops and they know the tough neighborhood in which they all live. As the case progresses, Kenzie and Gennaro face drug dealers, gangs, and pedophiles. When they are about to solve the case, they are faced with a moral dilemma that tears them apart.

The new show follows privates detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro around Dorchester, and obviously would expand on the source material. Potentially interesting, but don’t get your feelings going too quickly in either direction – it’s a long journey from a pilot to a series order.

Interesting re- Gone Baby Gone. I have read some of the other Lehane novels featuring Kenzie and Gennaro eg A Drink Before The War.
Hopefully the rights to the series of books rather than just one book have been secured.

Lacey a Cagney and Lacey reboot at CBS. Magnum P.I. reboot at CBS.

New Magnum P.I. & Lacey Likely To Be Diverse As Broadcast Networks Eye Most Inclusive Pilot Leads Ever
EXCLUSIVE: CBS is adding a twist to the classic TV character of Thomas Magnum in his return to television. I hear CBS’ intention is to pursue a non-white actor for the title character in its Magnum P.I reboot, a role originally played by Tom Selleck.

Additionally, I hear Lacey in CBS’ reboot of Cagney & Lacey, also is likely to be non-white. The character was written in the pilot script as a woman of color, sources say. In the Emmy-winning original, the title roles were played by Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless.

This is part of an across-the-board effort by the broadcast networks this year to have casts that represent the diverse makeup of America. What’s more, while non-white actors had often been relegated to supporting roles in the past, judging by early buzz, some predict that we may have one of the most, if not the most diverse group of broadcast pilot leads ever.

A number of pilots went into casting with non-white leads already attached or written into them.

I read an article somewhere which pointed out that reboots are the cheapest way for networks to get new shows, they already own the copyright and viewers already know of the characters
