    Darren Cave was fecking hilarious on The Last Wing
    His story of watching footage of Romanian players on dodgy videos with Joe making them out to be superstars made me laugh out loud on the bus

    The gradual evolution of swiwi into Jaco as he enters middle age is almost complete.

    It's a hollow solution by itself. And Darren Cave was talking about pushing Pienaar out being "100%" the right decision by Nucifora from an Ulster perspective based solely on how Cooney has worked out.

    My point is simply that Darren Cave is overstating how prescient a decision that turned out to be, because we have not seen any evidence yet that it has solved the root problem at Ulster.

    Eh, the Pienaar thing wasn't a solution to anything. It couldn't have been. You don't solve the lack of players by taking one away. The IRFU made a call that after 7 years of having that NIQ crutch and no development or recruitment of an IQ replacement that Ulster needed to have the crutch removed. They needed to understand that they simply had to start addressing their shortcomings. Any solution will come internally at Ulster. Not allowing Pienaar to be renewed was the kick up the backside that the IRFU gave Ulster so that they might actually start finding that solution. That they recruited a quality IQ 9 off the back of it shows that has at least partially worked, as it's more than they've done for the previous 7 years.

    He was great, came across very witty but also came across as a sound and reasonable bloke. Strikes me as odd that he wouldn't get on with coaches, just doesn't seem the sort.

    Has a real rugby brain and a clear interest in the technical aspects. Could see him being a decent coach. I'd nearly say the left wing would be better if he was a regular to be honest, the chat was gas.

    agree 100%

    I've heard him speak on a few media outlets and as you say he comes across very well.  Would love him to get a regular slot on The Left Wing.  He could provide a Monthly update on the Circus that is Ulster Rugby.

    Is there any evidence of this? Tbh he just hasn't been good enough to get past the guys ahead of him for international rugby for the majority of his career.

    Very good on this podcast though!

    I can only assume it was recorded before Kiss got the old heave-ho.

    I guess there hasn't been anything more than rumours. The 'face doesn't fit' article was bizarre and I think there was something else that came across poorly.

    He was quite frank though about where he thinks Ulster are but also quite hopeful. He was incredibly complimentary of Joe and didn't strike me as in anyway bitter towards him.

    Joy Neville is to referee Ulster v Kings on Friday. A positive development as far as I'm concerned...provided she is a good referee of course!

    I don't think the latter part can be in doubt at this stage!

    And so starts the reign of McPhillips.

    Ulster team to play Southern Kings, Guinness PRO14, Kingspan Stadium, Friday 9th February, 7.35pm:
    (15-9): C Piutau; C Gilroy, L Marshall, S McCloskey, R Lyttle; J McPhillips, J Cooney;
    (1-8): A Warwick, J Andrew, W Herbst, A O'Connor (captain), K Treadwell, M Rea, S Reidy, N Timoney;
    Replacements (16-23): R Herring, K McCall, R Ah You, M Dalton, C Henry, J Stewart, D Cave, L Ludik.

    Kiss gone and a very similar team selected including Cave being back out of the team as soon as someone else is available.

    Maybe they've decided Marshall needs game time, or better to have him start and break down rather than the reverse.
    Hopefully the academy get more game times in the incoming weeks.

    I heard Cave crept into Johnno Gibbes' room one night while he slept and crept right up to his ear and screamed "You are a lousy coach". Unfortunate he just can't seem to get a lucky run.

    I heard he crept in to the crypt, crapped and crept out again.:D

    Callum Black off to Worcester

    Callum Black off to Worcester

    He has been a good servant. He's probably a little disappointed he didn't manage to kick on to the next level. I'm sure he arrived here at 25 with plans of winning a few caps for Ireland but leaves without even having appeared for the Wolfhounds.

    Hopefully he sees out his career with some good showings and becomes a fixture in ther Worcester side. He's familiar with the club so I'm assuming he'll be able to get up to speed relatively quickly.

    Callum Black off to Worcester

    Is he surplus to requirements or is he making room for Pete Dooley or someone similar?

    Absolutely pissing myself in work laughing at that story. He's a great interviewee. They should definitely look at getting him in for more. Seems very switched on to what's going on across European rugby, not just Pro 14.

    McPhillips playing very well. Changes now. It'll all fall to bits as it usually does when mass subs happen. Cooney now at 10. Lyttle scores another stunner. Hamstring gone?...Fecked. Ditto Piutau and Reidy.

    I've been switching between the u20's and Ulster and McPhillips has looked pretty decent from what I've seen. He's got a good backline to work with against a pretty weak defense - a good combination to boost the confidence.

    Also, I really really like the look of Lyttle. He may be too small for the international game but he doesn't back out of contact and looks a natural ball player. Took his try very well.
