Is corned beef like spiced beef? I'm considering buying it to try but if it's like spiced beef, I'll pass. Not the biggest fan of the latter.

It is like spiced beef in texture but it's is only pickled, not spiced so doesn't have the spiced beef flavour.

Corned beef is a bit like bacon/ham but with beef.

I assume you are talking about corned beef you would cook at home - the pre cooked stuff tastes like nothing else. I'm not a fan of this.

Up until a few years ago I assumed corned beef was the horrible sliced stuff we used to get in the free sandwiches they gave us in primary school. I was so confused by the association with Irish people eating corned beef that a lot of people, mainly Americans, seemed to have. Even when I realised it was probably poor immigrants in New York, Boston etc. that had been eating it I still assumed it was the horrible sliced stuff from school sandwiches :)

I actually like the sliced packaged corned beef. In white bread. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing.

I never liked it growing up and recently my parents decided to get some for nostalgic reasons. They got "good" sliced corned beef. It was just as awful as I remembered it. Folks enjoyed it, though.

You know that jelly stuff in the corned beef? I remember being in France as a kid, and being given the jelly in baguette. Ugh!

I'd probably like it now though.

    What is that beef jelly?

Me too, although I prefer the one they slice fresh at deli counters. My mother used to mince it with tomatoes and onions to make a sandwich spread for our school lunches, and I often did the same by pulsing it in the food processor. It's really nice.

Oh, I read so many recipes that demand food processors. I don't have space. Is it worth it?

I use mine probably three times a week and wouldn't be without it.

Reading Jamie's 30/15 minute meals you'd think it was vital. Ours gets used primarily to make bread crumbs out of leftover crusts! Hand whisk is just as good for most tasks and much easier to clean.

I use mine for chopping and slicing vegetables, whisking meringue and making dough and pastry. It's just so fast.

I have only ever had boiled corned beef but I just spotted this version for oven-baked and it looks fab - might try it. Have not had corned beef in ages!

After the meatloaf suggestion last week, I'm looking for a cheap and cheerful dish for this weekend. Something like macaroni and vegetable soup, with parmesan cheese on top. The first 2 cooked separately, then mixed on a tray, cheese on top, and 20 mins in the oven. Kinda like the Italian version of a brown dinner cake? Yay or nay?

Can't go wrong with homemade minestrone, to bulk it out toast up some croutons out of stale bread & smother a bowl of it with melted cheese.
Ingredients are a matter of personal choice. I like mine with streaky smoked bacon cut up small & I find a small but of dried basil gives a nice aniseed type taste.
And lots of veggies beans pulses & shredded cabbage.

I've made this Italian vegetable soup a few times, it's very hearty and filling: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1094667/italian-vegetable-soup

I make something like that all the time, or more so I “used” to make it all the time. Absolutely packed with veggie goodness. Carrots, onions, celery, tin of tomatoes, frozen peas, chick peas, stock, chorizo, Conchigliette or macaroni, mixed Italian herbs. So filling and you pretty much put anything veg you fancy in it.

I think I’m gonna make a big pot of it over the weekend and freeze it in portions to have for lunch. :)

Made a huge pot of this for dinner tonight. Added in a tin of Kidney beans that was in the cupboard and also used up some up some Orzo pasta that was approaching it's BBE.

    In other news....

Bought these today in Supervalu. Hmmm

The first thing is so incredibly annoying!

But something else that bugs me is that there is a sh1tload of really bad recipes out there. And if you know very little about cooking you easily pick up one of these and just cook a bad dish because it would never turn out great because it simply is a bad recipe. And even worse are the people that still give it top rating because unfortunately there's a whole lot of people without knowledge or standard out there.

On the biggest German recipe site, where user can put up their own recipes there are a few outrageous recipes. There is now a Facebook page dedicated to these recipes, there's stuff you wouldn't believe people would eat that!

3 would sort of be mine, but I go straight to negative reviews. I think it is far worse to be giving 1 or 2 stars and then admitting you did not even follow the recipe.
    3. When a recipe is rated five stars except that everyone who reviewed it also put their own little twist on it.

The life story one bugs me too but it depends on who it is. The Pioneer Woman, for example, kind of built her brand on sharing everything about her life, family etc. so I expect it from her and get that the majority of "followers" of hers are there for that exact thing. Also I appreciate that she includes a printable recipe which cuts out all the unnecessary stuff.

Most other cases of it get on my nerves though. That's why I love the Tasty videos on YouTube. Literally all they are are the recipes.

That just reminds me of all those shocking American "recipes" videos on facebook.. stuff like cold spaghetti hoop tart or something lined with hot dogs around the outside! they are not dishes!
Kalen Allen does very funny reaction videos to some of them on you tube
