The point is that even after taking your arguments on board and understanding why you hold them - it still comes back to that basic question for a lot of us: why don't you just ignore them?

Because ignoring them doesn't solve the issue I and others have with them. They take up a lot of room on the front page, crowding out others, to serve the need of a relatively small number of posters. They are taking from the vibrancy of the forum and not giving new threads a chance (even interesting, engaging topics need time to take hold). I have observed that I am less in interested in AH than I once was because it appears so stale much of the time. My ignoring them doesn't solve any of that.

Why was there always such strong rule in place site-wide about chat threads if they weren't an issue? Why are they deemed to be no problem now? And how many can we expect? Will they be capped?

    Please explain how?

Well, fair enough. But that doesn't mean I don't have a point. It just means you don't agree.

    No argument there.

Save yourself the hassle and use desktop mode.
Lack of breadcrumbs is a ridiculous oversight, it's not 1992 anymore.

Just tried desktop and responsive there, I suppose I do have a phone with a small screen compared to a lot that are around these days but it's fairly cumbersome to use desktop on it.

And holy God almighty people weren't exaggerating about the responsive site, it's beyond bad. I thought I was stuck on it for a very panicky moment or two.

I appreciate that you are making your case in good faith and you've put forward reasoned arguments to outline your position, but I can't magically agree with you if I don't think you are right.

I'm not saying people have to agree with me. But there does appear to be a wilful determination to not concede that there might be some part of what we are saying that makes some sense. Some people posting here have admitted that they are defensive on behalf of the chat threads and that does seem to be clouding their views.

I think AH could handle two or maybe three chat threads. I think that's doable and fair and strikes a balance. And I think that's enough. How many are needed?

Well I don't know, I felt like I didn't really have to much to say. You want my advice in how to ignore things? Just for this instance or for real life in general?

This thread has actually made me feel depressed. I'm too involved. Officially retiring from it. I can say no more, you'll be relieved to read.

    No.
You posted that by ignoring threads they would somehow be removed from the first page and I asked you how?
    Was it just nonsense?

The threads in question are no where to be seen on the front page now, no precious forum space being clogged up, Happy now?

    And now they are back.
    Again
    As usual.

Without any snide remark required by me.

If I had said that it would be nonsense - but that is not what I said.

I said that you as an individual user can make a choice to ignore them. They will still be there - I am not literally saying that they will be removed from the front-page. I'm making the point that you can ignore them, in the most literal sense of the word: you can scroll past them, you can click on threads around them, you can click on page two or three - y'know ignore them? Most of the time that's exactly what I do.

Guys, I think the signal to noise ratio is veering quite a way towards the noise end

Rather than clogging this thread with comments challenging each other's position can we try and get back to some constructive feedback

Thanking you in anticipation (indeed with bated breath!)

How is that so hard to grasp?

I don't know what else to add?

How about we all link arms and sing a song?

The idea of a setting to hide some threads is not a bad one isn't it ? Just like you can follow or unfollow, or ignore a user, you could hide a thread ?
That way whoever is bothered by chat threads could remove them as an individual setting.

Maybe that completely un-achievable technically ?

Should not be that difficult, after all you can subscribe to a thread so you should be able to hide one as well. It's just finding the right switch in the utlis to enable the function.

In mobile, when you read a thread and decide you want to post a response to something. You log in. And then, are directed back to the home page of boards.ie, away from the thread/forum you wanted to reply to and are forced to wade through the endless navigation menus to get back to where you were. Most of the time I could not be arsed.

There are limited technical resources for the site and they seem to be heavily devoted to keeping things ticking over. I know a few of the suggestions being put forward are for the site development guys to consider, and quite a few have been on their list to consider for some time. Alas they seem to struggle to find the time with other priorities to consider

I'm sure though that if it is a straightforward suggestion they could find the time to flick the relevant switch(es) if there is general support for a change

Thread tags was the best thing about After Hours. Anyone remember them?

That answer wears a bit thin after the first 5 years or so.

    Look at Virgin/Horizon/NTL

Their useless EPG has people leaving them also, because it's been rubbish for years and ignoreD.

Problem was they were susceptible to abuse IIRC

They were in soccer anyway. Regularly. Admittedly some were quite funny (to the less mature users of the site)

If it didn't do that it would be useless...I wouldn't be praising it for doing it's basic job.

It's 2018, this stuff isn't rocket science or even expensive to do anymore... If there was a will to do it.

Somehow a lot of stuff managed to be improved back when it was 2 lads in a garage with no money.
