Well you did ask was there anything wrong!

To some people, apparently, that's their interpretation of a discussion:)

While yere here bitching about that I have loads of pm's from people giving out about the chat in there. Not every point in there needs to be debated to death like it normally is.

I think you should be seriously considering your position as a moderator on this forum.

One of the best threads in AH in a very long time, and this is the best you can contribute, for shame.

Although this had the traits of a feedback thread it only really evolved into one once we allowed it to run. Arguably it's another AH thread and a bit of levity does not go amiss when tensions rise

It has turned into more of a discussion of AH than the site as a whole over the past day or so. Indeed new suggestions on improving the site as a whole have dried up. I have tried to compile a list of those issues/suggestions which I will share when we start drawing the thread to a close. I would though encourage anyone who has more ideas they wish to air that may improve users site-wide experience to post them here. I know the main input has come from AH regulars but others are certainly welcome to post here.

Please don't turn this into a discussion of specific mod actions/comments

There are other avenues to complain about that sort of stuff

    Thanks

I wouldn't say it's allowed, explicitly. The problem is that other posters tend to react to it inappropriately. The reactions tend to be more blatantly against the rules, so they get modded and the rest gets ignored. Eventually too many people get in trouble so a thread gets lock to save those posters from themselves.

It's extremely difficult to build a case against someone when each post seems polite and well-reasoned, even if they do make up 5-10% of the entire post-count in a thread. A tolerance for this kind of poster has been expected of mods since a particularly problematic troll in the Soccer forum at the end of 2009.

Yes Dougal. In a feedback thread.

There’s already loads of threads for this. You love them, remember?

And naturally anyone who is sick of them doesn’t want to see the mindless chat bleed into other threads too. Hence Dougal’s reaction, I would think. That’s how being fed up of something works.

You're kind of missing my point. I don't believe that the chats threads are doing no harm. I believe that the sheer number of them is detrimentally affecting the forum.

I know myself that I thought about starting threads in recent months, topic ready to go. I'd start writing and then think "Nah, not worth it" for the reasons outlined above. I did a time vs benefit analysis and deemed it to be a waste of time. I know others have said the same on this thread. How many other people have also done the same and not vocalised it?

Maybe we're wrong and the chat threads are not affecting the forum. But I believe there's some sound logic behind the objections to them and people are just completely dismissing them like there is no merit. People are who don't use the chat threads are every bit as important as people who do (and I'm not convinced that the chat thread are that great at bringing in a large number of individual posters) and if we're finding them a problem and visiting the forum less because of them, shouldn't the issue at least be considered?

I don't know why people are conflating wanting less chat threads with only wanting serious threads.

AH used to be great for non-serious, amusing, non-chat threads. I'd love to see a return to that, personally.

Im not sure you've convinced everyone that your putatively great threads are being ignored because chat threads exist tbh.

I already acknowledged that some threads will die a death no matter what. I’m certainly not claiming that any thread I come up with will be gold. I’ve said as much in a few posts on this thread. Why would you think I said or implied otherwise?

It was actually an attempt to break a bit of the tension.

Swing and a miss. It just read as an extension of a chat thread.

I hope some stuff is taken on board.

My main hope is that Feedback will be restored. I wish boards.ie could just admit that that was a huge mistake. Shan’t hold my breath though.

There's a whole rake in it so I left it in the other thread/forum, but just wanted to quickly point out that a good bit of what was discussed in this thread is what I was getting at in the other forum this afternoon re power trips, inconsistency, incoherent messaging and whatnot.

I myself find some of the chat stuff a bit cringe, but a good point was made that maybe people would be better off trying to generate 'worthwhile' content rather than simply identifying content they don't like.

It's definitely a valid, related point as well that in the past, the content of the forum has probably been too fussily curated, even if it was well intentioned, leading to a sometimes repetitive and narrow range of topics.
