Gardaí have found no evidence that yesterday’s attack by an Egyptian teenager is related to terrorism.

And it has said that in the wake of the attack, which left one man dead and two injured, the terrorism threat level in the Republic remains unchanged.

The Garda has moved to quell speculation the incident in Dundalk, Co Louth, was terrorism related amid much public speculation, especially on social media, that the incident was an Islamist extremist attack.

“At this time, we can find no established link to indicate that this tragedy is terrorist related,” the Garda said in a statement.

“However, enquires are continuing internationally as the investigation develops.

“The threat level in this jurisdiction from international terrorism remains unchanged (moderate), where an attack is possible but not likely.

“The level of threat remains under constant review by An Garda Síochána in consultation with the Defence Forces. ”

United Kingdom is 66,379,645 as of Tuesday, January 2, 2018, based on the latest United Nations estimates. NI has population of just over 1.81 million.

It amazes me that people believe that the garda can and should just lift a man off the street and because he has no papers then put him on a flight back to Syria or Egypt.
Jasus there would be some BS on a thread here if that happened and he was denied his rights. Probably by the same posters too.

Of course illegal immigrants should be detained and deported if they've no legal right to stay. Otherwise the entire continent of Africa and the entire middle east would simply relocate here.

They can claim political asylum, they can appeal if denied and if that fails then they can be sent back. They can go through the process though so it's not instant.

If someone has no papers then you can't exactly send them anywhere! They could be from anywhere else. I might go out with no papers this summer and tell them I'm from Cancun if that's the case!

We have laws here that the state can hold aliens without passports/documents in detention centers until more is ascertained. That's the height of it.

Every media source??? Funny...hasnt been in the Dutch, German, French or Spanish news as far as I can see.

Maybe in Irish and British news, but like many situations the news is isolated as the world is a little bigger and the problems within the EU with these people much bigger. Such events are happening daily on mainland Europe...and are normally restricted to local press.
