That’s a special edition model in Australia, “the Wolfsburg” edition. Quite a bit of extra standard kit in it.

Trying to suss out start stop...sometimes the engine doesn't turn off if I come to a gentle stop, say coasting to a red then pressing the brake so I press the on-off button and it shuts off. It's not kept on due to climate or window fogging up or anything, I just didn't stop as hard as normal. Sometimes in stop and go heavy traffic it won't turn off after the first few stops. So I'm wondering if there's a limit to how many times it shuts off in a short period?

Another Vagcom query, can you disable the engine starting when the car in front moves forward? A lot of the time at red lights recently the car in front will move a few inches even though the light hasn't changed, prompting the engine to start, I press on-off, car moves forward again etc.

Also is it possible to stop the engine turning back on to heat up the cabin? I don't particularly mind it staying off regarding the heating.

Just trying to figure out if it's worth me getting someone to change things with Vagcom.

Get OBDEleven. Far far cheaper and more casual-user friendly than VCDS. It only runs on Android so if you’re an iPhone / iPad guy you’ll need a cheapo android tablet. But still a lot cheaper...

    Then disable stop/start. Hateful feature.

I like stop/start though :O I've heard a lot of stuff about ODB2 and the Torque app, is ODBEleven similar? I must look into it. I didn't think any coding could be done without VCDS.

I'm assuming the VW Data Plug won't work with third party apps. But I must have a look at VW Connect while it's there...

From my experience with start stop, i think it will not switch engine off if you stop very gently and apply only light braking. You can try it sometimes by stopping with a light foot, engine still runs. Then put more weight on the brake and engine knocks off. Regarding making changes to the start stop behaviour based on the front radar sensor reading, I don't know if possible, but I would leave well alone as that's not just a case of enabling or disabling a feature.

Can't say I'm that fond of start stop either in any car iv driven. Especially in diesels, like the wife's current car it's a pain in the hole.

Couldn't sleep so messed around with the Data Plug and VW Connect app, doesn't look like it will give me any more information than what I can see between the infotainment and digital dash, also doesn't work with Torque. Oh well! Must look into ODBeleven in the new year!

If you get the pro version of OBD11 you can do pretty much any vcds-style tweak. It’s about €65 delivered. Great gadget. I can post some tips on how to use it / good tweaks worth doing /helpful links if anyone’s interested.

I’ve disabled start/stop on both my own and the wife’s diesel A4. Like Vintage, I found it way more annoying in the diesel car due to the tractor like diesel car startup. The Audi actually allowed me to set it to “remember last setting after ignition is turned off”. I.e. I didn’t have to completely disable it.

Disabling it simply means telling the car to increase the voltage cut off point on the battery where it’s ok to engage stop/start to a point where the ECU never thinks it’s ok to turn off the engine.

And once you have the obd11 device you can always reverse a tweak if you don’t like it. A few weeks ago I disabled the exhaust flaps so that the 4 pipes are open always (only 2 are open by default unless pushing on). But I reversed that tweak again after a 20 minute spin. The drone was unbearable. To me.

I must write down the things I've mentioned so far so I don't forget. At that price point I wouldn't have much to lose if just doing a few adjustments. One thing I might do if possible would be to turn off the DRL when the indicator is on. I know it dims when indicating but I figured it would help visibility as the indicator is on the inside and the DRL is on the outside.

Also I noticed Some people have a horn beep when locking/unlocking their car, I might keep that in mind. One thing I like about American cars is that if you keep pressing the lock button the lights will flash and the horn will beep, very handy for finding your car in a Disneyland car park :)

Yes you can enable a beep on lock/unlock but only if the car has the factory alarm.

I did a few things with VCDS when I got the car but left stop start enabled.

Joe, you don't by chance know the coding from the A4 to remember the last setting? That would be an excellent feature if it could be found on the R.

I still haven't enabled traffic sign recognition :o

I didn’t do that one via long coding. With OBD11, as well as vcds style coding, for every car there are also pre-programmed “Apps”. They’re basically user-friendly one-touch ways to do the same thing as the more “scary” manual coding. So for the Golf there are loads of “apps” that cover most of the popular tweaks. It is recommended to use coding rather than the apps though as you can keep better track of changes you made.

for the A4 the stop/start App had 3 choices. Enable/Disable/Memory. I picked memory and now it remembers the last setting which is very handy alright.

But the same App when the Golf is connected only shows Enable/Disable. So maybe it isn’t possible with the Golf but I’ll do a bit of digging around when I get a chance.

Ah feck :( I'll do some more reading into it though and look online for some more tweaks :)

Wondering is somebody can explain some odd behaviour from the auto dimming lights. When I turn off a main road onto a country road, it immediately dims the lights and never puts full beams on. There are no lights along the road, no other cars met, no sign posts which may reflect my lights back. It always happens for the same stretch of road, it's very odd.

Also Merry Christmas, hope you all have a very good day!

The high beam assist control units are a common fault. You would usually get an error on the dash too though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

They do dim when your speed is below a certain level - think it’s 50kmh. Other than that it sounds strange given what you say (no oncoming traffic, etc). Is the road very dark, no lights from houses etc?

Happy Christmas to all too. Hope you all have a good one.

No errors appeared on the dash that I noticed.

Ah, that must be it, the road isn't a great road so wouldn't be doing over 50. That explains it so. Thanks.

60kph for high beams to come on.

I think that’s another one you can tweak with vcds. I must look into it as I’m forced to drive slow on the road into my own house due to speed bumps etc.

One more question, I just noticed a tube hanging underneath the car at the back, and it came out with no resistance. Never seen it before, anybody recognise this or is it something I just picked up on my travels? Thanks.

It looks like the tube from the overflow on the fuel tank.

Ah feck, at least I noticed it before it fell out somewhere on my travels I suppose.

Hi guys. My wife is having some issues with her 151 Golf. Namely the infotainment system. Touch screen is freezing most of the time, taking ages to respond or not at all. Any ideas? I think the warranty is up in January so will get it in after christmas hopefully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

That's common too. A software update cures it. It's be covered by your warranty.

The lights dip at below 30kmh and go back to full beam at 60kmh

Had this on my first mk7. End with complete replacement of screen and main unit in glove box.
Is the beep tone enabled on the screen? When mine froze it would then beep like Morse code a couple of minutes later.
I would make videos as proof of the issue.

Thanks Dave. No beep tone isn't enabled. I think video proof is a good idea as we could bring it in and it'll work fine. Better move quickly though the warranty expires in Jan.

I have the same issue occasionally on mine. Got them to do a software issue and while it happens less it still happen. Booked in again in a few weeks.

Was your car OK after you got it back a few months back?

Quick one regarding fuel level and range. The full half of the tank seems to last an eternity and once past half a tank it seems to go quicker. I'm used to that now but is that also linked to range?

I assumed range is based on the average recent MPG? When I fill up it says 620km but cruising to work it goes up to 660-680km after about 60-90km at about 45mpg commuting and when it starts to lower, it can still go back up 10km the odd day.

Now after passing half a tank my commute of 15km home seems to drop the range by 20km each day. I know it's all estimated and just a guide but is it just because the second half of the tank just seems to go quicker than the range is also lowering quicker?

It's not like the car is left running to clear ice or anything and I've actually been using the heated seats and all that less lately.

A quick update on this, I went to Joe Duffy in Navan about it and they were going to charge 100 euro for it, saying it was a big job to remove panels or whatever.

I did more research online, confirmed it was the overflow hose (based on the serial number 3aa 809 937 on the hose and some photos of fuel caps for the mk7). Pushed the hose back down the hole, confirmed water flows through it, all done in 2 minutes.

First time with a VW, but I know I won't be going back to Joe Duffy.
