St Flannans have received a favourable draw in the Corn Ui Mhuiri (Munster Post Primary Schools Senior A Football Championship). The Ennis school will face Tralee CBS in the 1/4 final of the competition with the winners taking on either Hamilton High School Bandon or Colaiste Cholim Ballincollig in the semi-final. That means they avoid both Pobscoil Chorca Dhuibhne or St Brendans Killarney who are widely regarded as the teams to beat in the Corn Ui Mhuiri until the final (if they get there of course).

Meanwhile in the Harty Cup quarter-final draw, Ard Scoil Ris who have a few Clare players on their team, will take on Gaelcholaiste Mhuire with the winners taking on CBC Cork or St. Colmans Fermoy in the last 4. The other quarter-finals see Our Lady's Templemore v John The Baptist Hospital and the marquee tie of the round between Thurles CBS v Midleton CBS.

These matches will be played on the middle of January.

Does anyone know of any challenge matches coming up for the Clare senior hurlers and footballers between now and the start of the respective Munster League and McGrath Cup?

In terms of the new arrivals to the senior hurling panel, can anyone confirm whether Keith White, Aidan McCarthy and Diarmuid Ryan are on the Clare senior hurling panel after having great seasons with the Clare minor hurlers.

A change in venue will see the Clare senior hurlers take on Kerry in the opening round of the Munster Senior Hurling League on Saturday 30th of December at 5 pm in Sixmilebridge.

The Clare senior footballers open their campaign against Waterford in the McGrath Cup, provisionally set at Cusack Park Ennis at 2 pm also on the 30th of December.

Good to see Keith White (Inagh/Kilnamona) on the Clare senior hurling panel. Gary Guilfoyle (Newmarket) is also training with the team. He was very impressive for the South-East Clare side throughout the Clare Cup and Championship. Others that are training with the Clare panel at the moment include Cratloe's Billy Conners, O Callaghan's Mills' Gary Cooney, Clooney Quin's Ryan Taylor and Cathal O'Connell (Clonlara) also returns to the Clare panel.

However Colm Galvin appears according to the Clare Champion this morning to be heading to Dubai for a teaching role there. Aaron Cunningham and Cian Dillon are also gone travelling but they may return later in the year.

Meanwhile in the football Eoin Cleary, Kevin Hartnett and David Tubridy are facing a spell on the sidelines and are all recovering from recent operations.

    Any newcomers to football panel?

I don't have much info on the make-up of the Clare senior football panel. All I know is one poster here says that Dermot Coughlan and Ross Phelan are on the panel. Personally I would love to see Gearoid Cahill (Corofin), Diarmuid Ryan (Cratloe) and Gavin Cooney (Eire Og) be given the opportunity to impress Colm Collins.

Agree 100% Stationmaster. Pity that the now defunct other Clare Supporters Club which was set up during the DF years could not be as transparent as Club Clare.

Being devil's advocate, isn't a big problem for the football team that Collins is also a club manager and doesn't get to see enough of the talent in the county and can also have prejudices against players not from his club?

Kilmurry Ibrickane clubman Enda Coughlan has joined the Clare senior football backroom team for 2018. The Quilty man who was part of the Clare senior football panel for over a decade before retiring in 2016 replaces the departing David O'Brien.

He's take on the club v county row would be interesting.

Great to see Coughlan involved. If he could persuade a couple of club mates to commit to county scene would be great too.

Collins has brought Clare from D4 to survival to D2 on limited resources. Doing a great job and managing club hasn't effected this.

Indeed he has however he is very dependent on a core group of players. Last year someone did a breakdown on the league and championship games by the squad and it was very obvious that he didn't blood enough.

I haven't seen this breakdown for this year but for the Mayo game in the park only 2 of the 11 subs had any substantial game time in a Clare jersey.

I know we need to stay in div to help us kick on but we need to have a deeper squad as well. Hopefully with 4 home games in the league coming he can give some of the lads on the shadows a bit more football.

The Clare Champion gave an update on how preparations are coming along for both the Clare senior hurling and football panels this morning.

In hurling Tony Kelly, Cathal McInerney, Jason McCarthy and Shane Golden are unlikely to feature in the Munster League opener against Kerry in 9 days time due to injury. Aron Shanagher is out for the season after suffering a cruciate knee injury. He had surgery earlier in the week. Cian Dillon and Aaron Cunningham are gone travelling while Colm Galvin has gone to Dubai for a teaching role there.

In football things are not great. Marty McMahon (currently on honeymoon) and Gordon Kelly have yet to decide on their futures while Keelan Sexton and Ciaran Russell will rejoin the panel early in the year. In addition Liam Markham has withdrawn from the panel due to work and study commitments in Dublin. Dean Ryan and Darren Nagle are in Australia. While Gary Brennan, David Tubridy, Eoin Cleary and Kevin Hartnett are all recovering from injury so are in a race against time to be fit ahead of Clare's National Football League opener against Cavan in late January. The Clare footballers will take on Waterford in the McGrath Cup opener at Meelick on Saturday week.

So by all accounts there will be a lot experimentation for both squads in their respective pre-season competitions.

It has also been confirmed that the Clare senior hurling and football managements have agreed to allow clubs access to their county players for most of the Clare Champion and Cusack Cup's respectively. In hurling clubs will have access to their county players for rounds 1-5 of the Clare Champion Cup and football clubs will have access for their county players for rounds 2-6 for the Cusack Cup.

In the best long term interests Tony Kelly should not be seen untill the very latter stages of the league at the earliest, last year his intercounty contribution was a near write off as a result of fatigue both mentally and physically, he is a natural leader and the effect of Ballyhea's run cannot be over estimated, he litterally ran himself into the ground.

Not blooding a few young players is going to come back and bite the footballers now.

The big news to come out of the Clare Champion this morning is that Colm Galvin has returned to training with the Clare senior hurling panel. There were suggestions that the Clonlara man would emigrate to Dubai for a teaching role there, but thankfully its seems he is staying in Ireland. Therefore he is available for selection for both the Munster League, NHL and Championship also. Clare take on Kerry in the Munster League opener on this Saturday with a 2 pm throw-in in Sixmilebridge.

good start to the new season , tough on players playing this week , only good thing for the hurlers is they will have plenty of time to blood new players and fringe players with the new setup in munster

i expect the management to rotate heavily through out the league

not overall worried about the KIB players missing , as far as i know they are committing to the panel , enda coughlan is also on the backroom team so i expect the notion of a boycott to be averted

i would expect to see a stronger looking team for the cork game in mallow in two weeks time

Now is the time to blood a few young fellas I think but you're probably right, going to be a good few experienced lads missing for the league so we need to find something. Was at the game and for all you can take from it I thought finucane, courtney and Sweeney all gave a very good account of themselves.

Conor Finnucane the big new hope for Clare football along with Eimhin Courtney? Finnucane from Lissycasey scored 7 of his 8 points in the 2nd half and Eimhin with 0-5 also. Huge talents the both of them. Great to see!!!!!

round up of who scored what in both games yesterday , as limestone said you cant get to excited this time of the year and against the opposition but nice to see lads putting there hand up

in hurling its great to colin guilfoyle take his chance with 3 points in the second half . plus i expect ryan taylor darragh corry and niall deasy get league time next month on a regular basis , management seem to be opting for big men in the half forward line so expect a more direct type of game plan from last year , we definitely have the players to be more direct like tipperary and galway and the players to go toe to toe with them if they are let

    Scorers for Clare v kerry:
    David Reidy (1-3),
    Niall Deasy (0-5, 1f)
    Shane O’Donnell,
    Cathal O’Connell,
    Bobby Duggan (1-1 each),
    Colin Guilfoyle (0-3),
Daragh Corry, Ryan Taylor (0-2 each),
Cathal Malone, John Conlon (0-1 each).

in football , players like eimhin courtney kieran malone and gearoid o'brien all spent most of last year warming the bench , great to see them take there chance also conor finnucane declaring for the panel this year will be a huge addition

with eoin cleary out for a good portion of the league its nice to have the options coming through , i would expect jack morrissey and dermot coughlan to have a say in the starting line up next month also when the league so i imagine alot of guys are playing for places on the panel more so then anything else at the moment

    Clare scorers: v waterford

    Conor Finnucane (0-8, 4f),
    Eimhin Courtney (0-5),
    Gearóid O’Brien (1-1),
    Cathal O’Connor (1-0),
    Seán Collins (0-2),
    Kieran Malone (0-1),
    David Egan (0-1).

From the hurling perspective, I guess one thing it would be great if we can find those two or three players that can bring on the squad, but even too 2 or 3 players that can take their game to the next level. Peter Duggan is an example of a player that was given many chances, didn't take them, but now seems to have really turned a corner. Maybe the next player to follow suit could be someone like Bobby Duggan, again a player that has all the hurling, but hasn't really kicked on each year but still very young.

Looking at the squad, we have often talked about bringing the right balance around midfield and half forward, and the management could really get the opportunity now to get it right. I'd be looking at Fitzgearld at midfield where aerial ability and range would complement Galvin/Reidy, while hopefully the management will have a couple of options at wing forward now with Peter Duggan and Niall Deasy pushing for starting places.

Just for the league, I wouldn't be playing McGrath, Kelly, Conlon, Galvin for 70 minutes every round, maybe even just 3 or 4 starts each and a couple of cameos from the bench. Keep things fresh and competitive, especially benefical with the extended Munster c'ship. Would like to experiment with something like this during the spring:

    Touhy
    O'Brien - POC - R. Hayes
    McCarthy - Cleary - Shanahan
    Reidy - Fitzgearld
    P. Duggan - Deasy - Malone
    Podge
    Cathal Mc SOD

Not sure is the Cleary at full back something we are going to see experimented in the league. The upside would be huge, freeing David McInerney to the half back line, but I'd be unsure if Cleary would be able to settle into the position. I'd never be against experimenting at the start of the year though!
