    Same here.

Going to trade in Wii U Zelda but debating whether to get rid of the console and all the games too.

I got rid of my (modded) Wii U and all the games on the internal hard drive. Then used that money to fund the Switch, best decision I ever made!

No, I'm saying if you want matching Joy-Con's and straps you've to pay extra. I'm well aware that they all ship with black straps. Why not ship Joy-Con's with matching colour straps? And for me, I think a Switch Pro Controller is a necessary purchase.
Any other colour in the straps would get manky looking after a few years like the Wii ones. Mario bundle has 2 red controllers shipped with it and the neon mix is my preference. In fact both switches in my house are neon.

I haven't used the Pro controller in anger yet but it does feel sublime to hold. I know you loved the Wii U gamepad but I hated it - always used the brilliant Pro controller whenever I could. So I plan to use the Switch equivalent as much as possible too. Which reminds me, I hope Nintendo patch Odyssey to allow pro controller users to do some of those hat throwing moves via button presses. I've seen a few videos mention realistically having to use motion controlls to pull off some moves. Really not a fan of that at all.

Already did that with the PS4 and about 30 games. :) The only game I half regretted getting rid of was The Last Gaurdian - but being honest it didn't captivate me like Ico/SOTC did. The Xbox getting way more time than PS4 these days anyway.

For you? Great. So if I'm fine with the joy cons in the grip and don't want a pro controller then I don't see why the cost of a pro controller should be passed on to me in any way.

Nintendo should provide the console with the joy cons and grip only and anyone who wants a pro controller can buy one. Problem solved.

If I bought some new joy cons and they come with the black straps then that's grand. I guess I'll use my joy cons with black straps. If someone else has a specific need for matching straps then let them pay for it. Problem solved again.

You seem to have an issue with the fact that if you want something specific then you have to pay more but the vast majority of businesses operate in this way. They will offer a basic package and if you want to deviate from that into a more bespoke set up then you will be expected to pay more.

The neon yellow strap (pack of 1) costs 2.99 on Amazon UK right now. The neon blue is 4.99. Grey in 2.99 and red is 2.99.

So having that matching set up will cost you between 6 and 10 pounds. If someone REALLY wants the joy cons to match so badly then I think 10 pounds if a fair enough price. If the same person thinks it's not worth it then they just shouldn't buy it. Easy.

If don't have a Switch how would you know a Pro Controller is necessary?

I'm still on the fence. Most of my gaming is on handheld, so obviously the Pro is no good there, but I played a few sessions of Skyrim and Lego Marvel on the big screen, and I do think I need to get the Pro. It's actually not the comfort, the joy cons are fine, but their range still isn't great and I still get the odd drop.

Because he used a display switch in Smyths and felt it was too small for his massive hands so unlike everyone else who finds handheld fine he would need a pro controller to play the console on TV as it would be sacrilege to take a home console out of its dock.

There are display Switches around? That's news to me :pac:

I have the Switch under the tree for Christmas, I'll give the Joycons a week or so and if they don't suit I'll buy a Pro Controller. I'm not going to write the Joycons off without giving them fair time.

A perfect example is the Elite Controller for the Xbox, I found the paddles very awkward at the start but now I can't use the standard Controller as it feels like a step backwards.

Having had the Switch since launch day my advice would be to use the joycons split as much as possible first! I played through all of Zelda with them in that crappy supplied grip and now wish I had tried the split setup more, especially with Zelda! I love the split joycons with Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey and this is coming from someone who initially played loads of Splatoon 2 with my pro controller! Kind even thought I might sell the pro and use that money to buy an extra set of joycons! Would make local 4 player much easier!

    Thanks,
    M

I play in handheld mode exclusively at the moment, can't really imagine putting the screen down on the table in order to do split controls. Maybe I should try it.

I only use split joycons when it's docked to the TV at home, never really when in handheld mode.

Is the pro controller a must for Zelda? or does it work fine with the controllers that come with the console?

@ Emmetkenny i used the grip for about 200 hours in Zelda, no problems whatsoever! I wouldn’t worry about opinion on a forum in relation to Controllers, try them yourself, you might love them in the grip or prefer the split setup, we are all different but I have to say the grip is far from crappy for me, I really like it.

    Switch Rails :
He's not talking about the strap. Gray Switches come with black rails. Neon switches come with Black rails. Yellow Joycons come with black rails. Red joycons come with black rails. Neon Splatoon joycons come with black rails.

And the appropriately coloured rails are sold separately for extra.

The cost of separate black rails is, far as I remember, the same as neon, yellow, red, splatoon-neon at retail.
So it's not a major cost saving. It's just a weird little needless aesthetic gouge.

    Other JoyCon Colours :
Look at how many WiiMote colours were available in WiiU packaging on shelves for the WiiU release.
Also, the Neon red/blue thing is an important part of the "2 player baked in" branding, a huge visual cue that the 2 joycons are more than just 1 controller.
    Dismissed!

    Pro Controller necessity :
Doesn't matter what you feel man. As a WiiU owner I'm sure you can appreciate the necessity for the switch to be resolutely on-message at all times. That means not bundling a controller that didn't fit the "Anywhere, Anytime, With anyone" message.
Also, *cough* WiiU pro controller on getting bundled in the Monster Hunter and maybe ZombiU packs despite many people feeling the same way about it relative to the gamepad as you do about the Pro Controller to the Joycons*cough*

I would say that the pro controller is a very nice controller.

It's not necessary though it is better than the joy cons in the grip.

Definitely not a "must have" but if want it badly enough then I would recommend it.

I've said before that people need to try the Joy-Con's out for themselves to make up their own mind. The article below covers it well.

    joy-con-pro-controller-top.jpg?itok=rV14gd8P

The Pro Controller for me looks infinitely better and more comfortable. The Joy-Con's have tiny buttons, analogue sticks and feel way to cramped. Everything about it feels compromised. Plus you get a proper D pad on the Pro Controller. Maybe if you were little Dennis Wise the Joy-Con's would be fine. He's such a small man.

And yes @Banjo I'm talking about the rails. I feel it's Nintendo trying to bleed a little more money out of consumers. Matching colours look better than a black stripe across the top of the Joy-Con's. Anyway, I can't see myself using them much that way.

But you can't tell how comfortable something is by looking at a picture. You need to give it a fair test first.

Not essential. I find joy cons fine to use.

I'd advise against using the grip though. I think it's horrible to use. A joycon in each hand is so much more comfortable and easier to use.

All the people disagreeing with you DID try it out for themselves. For longer than you did! Far longer.
You can't win this argument with a single first impression and by quoting a 2nd hand opinion against a bunch of people with hundreds of hours of first hand experience. You just can't.

Look, you -like everyone- are entitled to your opinion whether we agree with it or not, but for god's sake stop ramming it down peoples throats whenever they ask about Joycons vs ProController. You may understand the differences intellectually but you simply do not know.

Unless you do. Confess! Which colour Joycons did you get?

The only game I've played thus far where I felt the Pro-Controller would be of benefit is DOOM.

And I actually prefer the look of the joy-cons with the black rails, rather than the colour co-ordinated rails...

Actually the range us really big issue for me. You only appreciate the ps4 and xbox one controller range, when you meet joycon range.
At this point I am 99% handheld with switch. A few days a go I decided to put dock behind tv upstairs, next to my ps4. I though I will use docked mode a lot more then.
Well, it didnt worked out. Constant drops, interference, losing connection randomly etc. Imposible to play in bed like I do with ps4. So dock went downstairs to collect dust.

Out of interest, does pro controller has better range then joycons?

I prefer the look with the black rails myself, although the only time I would attach the rails is when playing multiplayer games with a joycon each.
I have the pro controller also but I don't use it nearly as much as a joycon in each hand. The comfort of being able to have one arm on the arm of the chair and another on the top of the couch is much better.

I’m picturing scenes from Game of Thrones here, with the nun demanding he own up to the truth of owning a Switch, followed by the walk of atonement and being pelted with filth for finally giving in and admitting to buying a grey Switch, despite all those posts criticising every feature of it for the past year. Shame! (and rings a little bell) Shame! (rings bell again) Shame! (bell) and so on.

Thought the grip was cheap tat myself tbh. Leaves the controller feeling jusy too small & square to feel comfortable for long sessions. I see why Nintendo put it in the box but a joycon grip controller is dreadful in comparison to a PS4, Xbox One or Pro Controller.

I agree; not a fan of the grip at all. I use the JoyCons loosely, find that far more relaxing, even compared to a "standard" joypad. I too see why Nintendo put it in the box... and that's where I've left it.

When did you get your Switch? Was it early on in its life cycle? Launch model Switchs have a problem with connectivity in the left Joy-Con. You can message Nintendo online with your serial number. You could maybe have one of those models, Nintendo will fix it for free if you do.
