The best example of a comparison to settle this test/friendly debate doesn't involve football. The example people should be using is cricket. the 5 day games are literally called 'Test' matches. They are tours of varying lengths where one country plays another and are not in tournament format. They are exactly the same as the rugby equivalents. Exactly the same

he should pick his 30 - 35 panel he would like in japan and get them learning in big games.
    .

And what happens if there is a loss of form, injury or a few of them decide to head to france for 2018/19 (good few lads out of contract next May/June).

No side will pick their RWC squad 2 years in advance. You have more to lose then gain from it.

Think there's a possibility that Conway and toner could get rested this week as they've started twice so far. If Ryan is fit I'd love to see Ryan and Henderson get a start in second row.
Wouldn't be too surprised to see a back three of stockdale, Byrne and Kearney with Conway on the bench

I would be surprised to see Conway out of the first xv. I think he is in competition to start for the six nations and if not will wear the 23 shirt. As such I feel the minutes against tier one opposition is important for him. Byrne in contrast has a lot of development to do and I feel that he is in the squad mainly to learn and be given stuff to work on by Joe and to be a different type of person to run defensive drills against.

On the flip side Joe has seen plenty from Conway and might just give Sweetnam a tier 1 start.

Edit - that is not a criticism aimed at Conway by any means before anyone gets upset. A back 3 of Stockdale, Kearney, Sweetnam sees all 3 of them plus Conway starting 2 games each

its just ireland under schmidt cant deal with injuries as the replacements are not experienced at playing top tier teams.
for example there is more to be gained by picking ross byrne on the bench against argentina.

Schmidt has to build an experienced panel for 2019, and that should start immediately.
he should pick his 30 - 35 panel he would like in japan and get them learning in big games.
There is a large gulf in experience between players in the panel and a couple of injuries and 2019 will be another wipe out.

Is that not exactly what he did on Saturday?

Sweetnam didn't look out of place at all so far at international level, I didn't think he'd fit in so well tbh

    Sadly it could well happen

There was an article in the star on saturday about him. He played a pile of sports growing up ( soccer, gaa, hockey and rugby and others). He looks a natural athlete. That variety of sports definitely benefits him.

What have you got against Sweetnam? I think he's done well in both games.

What exactly is your problem with that?

Spreading gametime out amongst those 4 is surely a good idea?

He has and Conway has too. When Earls comes back I figure Conway is the natural one to stay in the 23 so I would give him the game time.

RTE really need to put Joanne Cantwell on as anchor presenter for the rugby coverage.

i thought the selection against fiji had too many changes and was not very fair on the players.
for argentina i would like to see#

    healy best ryan
    dillane henderson
    ruddock stander sob
    murray sexton
    sweetman aki henshaw stockdale
    conway

    kilcoyne herring porter
    ryan
    pom
    marrimon ross byrne
    adam byrne

we have to give guys experience but in an environment where that experience is positive - win or lose.

The 6 nations, of course we should go to win the championship, but we also have to build an experienced panel for 2019.
Look at Carbery last weekend, thats rugby now, serious injuries are now to be expected and managed for.
The reality in 2015 was the injuries and suspensions did us against argentina, but it was aided by the fact we had not prepared for that situation.
You cant blame schmidt for that, only there 2 years at the time.
but he has 4 years run in to this world cup and I fear that unless starting 2018 he rotates the squad, not to a ridiculous degree, we will arrive in japan thinking we are ready when in fact we will be a few injuries away from history repeating.

    Personal I'd like to see;

    Healy
    Best
    Furlong
    Ryan (is he fit?)
    Hendo
    POM
    SOB
    Stander
    Murray
    Sexton
    Stockdale
    Aki
    Henshaw
    Byrne
    Kearney

Tracy, McGrath, Ryan, Dillane, Ruddock, McGrath, Keatley, Conway

I think we've been building on growth at every opportunity nicely. I always find it funny when Schmidt is accused of conservatism when the stats show he's capped more players per game ratio than any other pro era Irish coach I believe. (Not saying you're saying that just pointing it out).

No need to throw out the baby with the water and all that.

Ross Byrne isn't in the squad nor should he be. Drop furlong now? He's a baby prop and will be Coke the World Cup. Porter won't be involved in the World Cup I imagine. Also why drop POM? Or more conversely why not drop best if you're solely thinking of the next WC?

I think it's because his first name isn't Tiernan and his surname isn't O'Halloran.

    lesser known fact about me:
I played underage hockey against and with Darren Sweetnam at interpro and national level. He was pretty good at that too, not just the hurling and rugby
unluckily for him Munster were/are at best very average at hockey only pulling from a handful of clubs and schools. very ulster and to a lesser extent leinster dominated sport.

I actually dont know how you can criticise a coach for not giving enough players experience and for picking a too rotated team in the one page. Thats something special.

Another lesser known fact Jordan Larmour was an underage hockey International also and played up until Christmas of sixth year when he quit to improve his chances of getting an academy place.
What club did you play hockey for?

Another fact about me, I was 3 or 4 years above Andrew Porter and Jordan Larmour at the cricket club I was involved in. Was a contemporary of Josh van der Flier

    Played with Pembroke

Sydney Parade? My fav ground because i scored my only ever 50 there

would agree with .Ak's team more or less for Saturday to get everyone a decent crack at time. One change would be Kilcoyne on the bench again. McGrath got an hour and Kilcoyne didn't. He also did nothing wrong when he came on, in fact he was very good

Just the bad ones with easy access to glory and caps

but its not a case of dropping anyone but giving guys a chance.
best unfortunately is dipping but we lack real depth at hooker. that is a real problem area that has the potential to hurt us.

pom stander and sob look like first choice
we need to get conan and ruddock etc serious game time to offer realistic competition because currently the choice at backrow is not as strong as people believe.
and this is the case across the field bar a few positions.
the 6 nations is where you build your squad, not autumn internationals.
