If you are looking for all around the outside of the house, I have a Reolink 16ch NVR and 12 POE cameras which was around 999 in the Amazon day sale a few months back.

I'm just looking for a half decent one for front of house that has good night vision at a reasonable price.

I picked up the Logitech Circle for £69 last Black Friday. Very good camera.

Mine is in doors only, not waterproof. They have a second gen ones now that are waterproof if you are looking for outdoors. Keep an eye out on the sales I'd guess they will be reduced.

I’m looking to build a DIY security system also. Id rather not have to run cables everywhere as that would be quite inconvenient. I’d also like to store to the cloud, so looking for ideas.....?
I could do Nest, Arlo or Logitech, but expensive subscriptions and quality of video isn’t great esp at night......any ideas folks....?

Logitech might be the way to go all right, so are you fully switched over to home bk?

It depends. Do you want a proper security system?

I ran the cables and run a PC at home dedicated for cctv with BlueIris software. I have Dahua 2MP cameras (around $160-$200 each) with sensors for very good night vision. The cameras also have varifocal lenses so I can zoom in for certain locations and get good face shots. Had the guards around a couple of weeks ago and they said it’s some of the best cctv images they had seen.

If you are putting cameras outside you need cables to them 100% whether that’s a power cable or a Ethernet cable. If you have to run a cable anyway, run the Ethernet and use PoE (power over Ethernet) to both provide power and network connectivity.

What you put into a cctv system, you will get out of it. Buy a all in one Swann system and you’ll see blurry images with practically zero facial recognition at night unless the person is within a few feet of the camera. Do the research and see what focal length you need for each camera. Don’t buy wide lenses 2.8mm - 4mm with the intention of capturing faces as they are just for wide field of view. For high traffic areas or somewhere you’d expect someone to pass through put a 6mm or higher lense camera.

In my case I have something like this
    Front door - 12mm
    Garage - 4mm
    Dog run - 2.8mm
    Wasteland beside house - 2.8mm
    Back door - 6mm
    Back patio - 4mm
Front gate - 25mm (so I can zoom right in between the pillars)

Mini just arrived into ParcelMotel depot, so hopefully next day or two :)

Though I'll keep the Echo in the kids room for now, but purely for a bit of music.

Linksys, triple pack, triband mesh network for £292 on Amazon at the moment.

Linksys WHW0303-UK Velop Tri-Band AC6600 Modular Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System.

Would be handy for VERY large homes with poor wifi. Good quality wifi is pretty important for a lot of home automation gear. Though a three pack like this is probably overkill for typical sized Irish homes. Either just a good quality wifi router or a dual pack is probably enough for most people.

Any speculation the UK price if mini will drop again on Wednesday in line with the US?

The mini is currently reduced to £35. It is reduced to $30 in the US, but that is excluding sales tax, etc. as usual.

Aeotec Z-Wave Smart Switch is the lowest it's ever been on Amazon UK. £37.76. Ignore the photo, it's the UK/Ireland 3-pin version as I bought one last week (albeit from the Warehouse)

Neato Botvac D3 as deal of the day on Amazon £299. If I hadn't already picked up the Connected I'd be all over this. Search for this Neato Robotics 945-0274 Ultra Pack Botvac D3 Connected Navigating Robot Vacuum, 30 W, Graphite Grey.

Order through An Post - AddressPal. The battery may cause a problem with Parcel Motel.

If you're worried - pick up the 3 year amazon warranty for £29.

    Deals on Echo's in.

    Echo Dot - £34.99
    New Echo - £69.99

Add a TP-Link HS100 plug for just £9.99 when buying any Echo device.

TP-link arrived... Amazon shipping these orders in parts it seems, so a double up on the PostPal costs and a couple of trips (yes I did tick ship all as one...). Still good value though.

Are there smart outdoor security cameras that are battery operated? Changed a window frame recently so the hole for the previous camera is now gone and don't really want to put a hole in the new one. Worse comes to worse I'll pick up one that comes in the sales, preferably the Nest Protect.

I'm waiting for the Blink XT to drop in price.

Have the Blink cameras in the kids bedrooms and love them. NO wires and easy to setup.

    Highly recommend

has anyone who ordered a google home from currys via parcel motel got it yet? Mine was delivered to PM yesterday, I expected it to be in my locker this morning as usual, but it hasn't been checked in to PM Belfast yet, never mind dublin :(

Never mind, it's on its way to Dublin now, seems that the Royal Mail tracking website was wrong, it was actually delivered this morning.

What’s the night time vision like for outdoor use........? While the benefit of wireless is great, it seems hard to beat the performance of the traditional Hivisions etc......welcome comments
