For internet nothing will beat Virgin. Eir is probably the best of the rest, but it will still suffer contention issues at times and drops in speed.

Virgin's only problem is their TV is absolutely rubbish.

Yeah we've the horizon box and tbh it's shìte. Set it to series record Peaky blinders on Wed night but it decided not to bother. I seriously was going to smash it to bits with a hammer but herself's name is on the bill so that's a non runner.

Have to change to anything...What's Sky broadband like...only used for Netflix and the young ones watching youtube on the laptop/phones...never downloading or streaming anything.

Yes but high-vis clothing even more so. Already this month I've had to slam on the breaks more than one occasion at junctions due to cyclists wearing black coming through the junction at speed on dark, wet mornings and wearing all dark clothes. Not a chance of seeing them until they're about 15m away.

I cycle to-and-from work about 3 or 4 times a week, it's about 20km each way, I negotiate the whoooooolllllleeee way through the city centre and out the other side so I have some experience of this... high-vis clothing is obviously better than dark clothing but what needs to be mandatory for cycling particularly in the dark is front and rear lights. They are much much much much much much much more effective than bright clothes.

The lights are actually the only thing that is mandatory by law. Yellow or white to the front and red to the rear. A large amount of cyclists don't use these though particularly people whose commute is in daylight for the majority of the year.

Wasn't aware of that. I'd imagine it would be fairly hard to enforce too. People are idiots.

Though I have to say on my commute it's rare enough I'd see a cyclist without some sort of lights or high-vis or both.

Yeah, Virgin wasn't an option for us and with the sports channels deal that we get with Eir it was a pretty easy decision really. And so far so good. We've had it about 6 months and have had zero issues so far.

Well, in one of my personal examples, I'm waiting to enter a busy roundabout at 7am on a rainy morning, traffic clears to the right so I accelerate and then, out of the darkness, there's a cyclist on the roundabout coming at speed who I cannot see until the last moment. He has the right of way. He isn't wearing any high vis clothing as it's not required by law, he has no helmet as it's not required by law. He's wearing all black which is fine, legally.

He goes over my bonnet and smashes his head. I'm gonna say I'm in the wrong here but it's bloody hard to spot a cyclist in those circumstances.

Well he's legally obliged to have lights and if he has lights you shouldn't require him to be wearing high vis to see him. A helmet wouldn't exactly have made him easier to see either so I don't understand the relevance.

I nearly always wear a helmet. I rarely wear anything high vis. I never cycle without lights. As far as I'm concerned the single greatest danger to cyclists is to have fewer of them on the roads - their presence needs to be normalised and anything that reduces the number of cyclists for questionable benefit should be avoided.

I have zero sympathy for anyone complaining about cyclists cycling 2 abreast. If you can safely overtake one cyclist you can safely overtake 2. Cycling three abreast is illegal.

There are a shocking number of terrible, terrible cyclists out there but they're still far less likely to kill anyone than a driver.

He didn't have lights but I was playing devil's advocate (helmet was just in terms of him copping an injury and I'd be in trouble for it). Even if he did have lights, some bike lights are not great in those conditions. Better than nothing but cyclists really need to take more precautions to protect themselves. I now always make sure I roll down my car window at a junction like that as it's tricky to pick out a bike light coming around a rounadabout in the dark silhouetted by the backdrop of cars and buses entering and exiting the rounadabout particularly when raindrops tend to distort any lights.

This is at the Artane roundabout, just for reference as I know you're probably familiar with the junction. Not the worst roundabout but with cycle lanes going around it (not always used) and pedestrian lights now on all 4 exits people get quite tightly wound looking for a gap.

On a side note, that roundabout inspired my 2 year old daugher's first swear word when her father cursed at someone and a delighted gurgle came from the back seat....."F*uuucccccccckkkkk!". That went well when repeated that evening.

Just how much protection do you think they give? A thin layer of polystyrene in anything above a 10km/hr collision is not going to Dave you.

In June I was in an accident on my bike. Impact happened at ~28km/hr, I dented the car with my helmet. I was concussed, but alive.
