    Just the ondemand/playback stuff.

The rest of it is just a bog standard dvb-t dvb-s2 combo box, without 7 day epg, without the ability to combine both sets of channels in one list and right now the inability to record......

Do you mean on Saorview Connect you have to switch between the feed giving you RTÉ and the one for the dish with BBC, etc?

They need us lot on the trail to give them the real feedback. I presume trial users got the box for free (+ some compensation). They might feel different after paying €200.

I got rid of sky about 3 years and had a first gen walker box with an aireal in the attic, so I already had the setup to use a combi box. The menu is neat and easy to navigate, App works ok for reminders and as a remote, over all it works very well for my requirements.

    Hi Maysa07,
Have you tried the box with any other satellite's?
    Saorsat on 9 east
    13 east
    19 east

When watching BBC on satellite, will the red button function?

Does the box have any record function at the moment?

    Thanks

Yeah but, RTE wouldnt have been able to proceed with just designing a box that concentrated on their own IPTV playback elements using the Methaphor software, rather than designing a box for the platform. IE one that combined the UK and Irish stations in one with 7 day epg.

The feedback would have been horrendous!

Imagine trialling a box that couldnt even record.

    Yes.

    Was trialing it.

I assume the NDA is no longer in effect, and so if you can answer, how long were you trialling the receiver?

Well that is a big no-no.

Are all Saorview boxes like that?

And more importantly are you willing to disconnect the box from the mains and take the lid off and take a picture of the inside ? :)

I haven't tried other any other satellites. I used the the dish i had setup already when i was a sky customer.
The red button home button brings you into your settings, and where you switch between Saorview and Satellite modes
The record function is not available as yet, i understand it will be available sometime in 2018.

    @sponfarmer

The combi version of the box will let you view both satellite and saorview channels.

Normally with combi boxes you can switch very quickly between saorview and satellite. Not sure yet how quick this one will allow it as the satellite section seems to be separate.
Not sure if you can create channel lists or not.

I have a box ordered so will update when I get a chance to play with it.

I am surprised that the box doesn't allow one to view live feeds unless the integrated player allows it.

Sorry Maysa, should have explained my question better

On BBC on Satellite channels, if you press the red button or possibly the text button, will you get an interactive service?

For example I've pressed the red button or text button on BBC 1 tonight and I can select a football match between Crusaders and Linfield.

    Thanks

Reading the manual the satellite function is the same standard we had before with no programme data appearing until the channel has been selected. There will thus be no series linking on the satellite side.

This box has potential but it needs/needed a couple of things to appeal

    - be able to quickly switch between sat and saorview (if the back button doesn't allow quick switching between chosen sat and saorview channels it will kill the combi version)

    - control over the hdmi function with the connect remote (this doesn't appear to be the case). This would allow one to switch quickly to another hdmi source (e.g. a chromecast for netflix or youtube)

If the above doesn't happen one would be better off waiting for just a saorview only connect box to come out and pair it with a freesat box.

The combi could always be used for a 2nd room.

The above is just a small thing that wouldn't have been difficult to do. E.g. the 'Spotlight' button on the remote control is a waste of space. A source button with the ability to then toggle between hdmi inputs would have been so handy and all done on one remote.

According to RTÉ's press release earlier this year about its Next Generation Player they said
The new RTÉ Player experience will be a gateway into a world of great content, from box-sets and curated on-demand libraries across 10 genres, to exciting new original RTÉ Player shorts, as well as the ability to enjoy RTÉ's live channels on any screen.

Delivering a multi-platform experience, the redeveloped RTÉ Player will be available across web, iOS, Android, connected TVs and OTT services, including Saorview, Chromecast, Android TV and Apple TV.

    @Maysa07

Did you look at the Powerpoint apps section of the box? What type of apps are in there?

How do you switch between the Saorview and satellite tuners on this box?

I've purchased a new Walker smart TV (Vestel) which includes a satellite tuner, all channels are in a single list, satellite channels starting at 301. Why couldn't EKT do this?

It is a big question. If 2 or 3 button clicks are required to switch it will be a pain in the ass.

Freesat obviously don't want the sat side near their metaphor software which in fairness was only procured for the saorview side of things.

If the rte player becomes chromecast enabled people might start to wonder whether there is a need for a Connect box especially with no Netflix either.

Saorview are going to have to offer some exclusive content on this Connect box or it may struggle for sales.

With no tv3 rollback on the box either it is another negative as soap fans would have liked to have the rollback option.

So can anyone who has trialled it answer whether the RTE Player/Catchup system is overloaded with ads like the normal RTE Player, for example having to watch 4 pretty much identical ad breaks while trying to skip through a 1 hour show?

And another question, does the box come with the next generation player or will that be future update one they officially launch it?

The RTÉ player received Chromecast functionality in October, I have it working on my tv using Chromecast.

Did this launch really happen yesterday?

Had look at their Facebook and Twitter pages and couldn't find a single post announcing it. Were they worried about the rush to the shops for limited supplies or just a bit embarrassed?

They eventually updated their social media sites last evening, better late than never I suppose.

The NDA for the Trial ? The trial is finished and the product is in the public domain.

Obviously questions about the box if its the one and the same box would be completely different to specific questions about the trial.

I had a look at the Saorview Facebook page. One person in the comments about Saorview Connect said that there was no 3Player app available on this new connect box which is very disappointing for the price of €200. I am not sure about the TG4 Player included with the box. Maybe the poster who did the trial for Saorview Connect could make further comments on the available apps for this box.

I would assume that the RTE Player is the only app available for Irish catch up TV which is pathetic really since it is only out since Wednesday.

The core audience for the RTÉ Player is 25-35-year-olds, she added, indicating that the Player has a natural “affiliation” with RTÉ 2 programmes.

Oh well seemingly us old farts can ignore it ...... nothing of interest there .....
