Looking at the saorview remote control video I don't see mention of a recall button. I hope the back button acts as this function.

It says on the manual that you can link up your tv to the remote but will only control power on and volume. No hdmi function.

Will Saorview Connect work something that is similar to Freeview Play & Freeview in the UK that will only include all of the Irish catch up services?

Will Saorview Connect be able to work in tandem with Saorview or will people have to be used to one service or the other when watching Irish channels via an aerial?

'Via an aerial' isn't 'connected' i.e. internet, so I'm not really sure what you're on about here.

It's just different delivery methods for the same content, no need to work 'in tandem'.

Will Saorview Connect act as a complimentary service or a compulsory one which means that consumers will have to replace all Saorview equipment in their homes?

Simply, Saorview continues as it is and will do so for many years to come.

Connect is an added service for additional features, it is not required to view the basic Saorview channels as we have done for the last 6 years. The Connect receiver will continue to operate as a basic Saorview receiver for those without a broadband connection to the house and vice versa, a non-Connect Saorview receiver will continue to operate as before.

Connect is based on the HbbTV standard - hybrid broadcast broadband - which allows both services to combine seamlessly. This means additional features via broadband may be accessible while watching a Saorview channel via the aerial such as programme information, red button, advertising etc.

This will eventually replace OTA MHEG-5 text, we may see additional IPTV channels via Connect e.g. all the Oireachtas channels could be available this way as was hinted at previously.

So a receiver with an integrated HDD isn't even planned for next year, madness.

Ah Jaysus Cush, you want a proper pvr? Don't be silly, they haven't been invented yet, it's 1997, not 2017!!!

Did this launch really happen yesterday?

Had look at their Facebook and Twitter pages and couldn't find a single post announcing it. Were they worried about the rush to the shops for limited supplies or just a bit embarrassed?

Connect a Saorview Connect box to an aerial and you're done.

    Well and truly :D

So I have €199.99 burning a hole in my pocket that I was planning to spend on Saorview Connect. I was really hoping that it would deliver, I was wishing them well. But I'm now NOT gonna spend that cash on a Saorview Connect box that's only worth about 80 quid, going by the functionality offered. It's a real shame.

So what should I spend the money on instead, if I want a good quality Saorview/Freeview combo box with integrated PVR? I'm sure I'm not the only person wondering this right now....

An Enigma2 based combo receiver if you don't mind a bit of tinkering to set it up.

I'll take a look at the Enigma 2, cheers! It's so frustrating to have waited so long for this box, only to find that it's overpriced and under functional :(

Best Value right now for 3 tuner box. ie 2 Satellite, 1 Saorview is the Edision OS Mega Triple Tuner

Basic cost £159. Use parcelmotel and the postage cost is 3.95. (you can obviously add a hard disk yourself or buy one from WOS)

I fail to understand why there are not two DVB-T/2 tuners in those STBs as well as the two Satellite tuners.
Do they not expect people to want to be able to record one terrestrial channel while watching another?

Maybe the saorview connect box isn't so overpriced at all. Afterall it will eventually allow one to record a terrestrial/sat channel while viewing any other. The Enigma boxes won't offer any rollback feature either.

I am in the same position, waited to see if Saorview Connect would deliver :(

My understanding is that there are two tuners in the Connect box. Each one can be configured to be any of: DVB- T1; DVB-T2; DVB-S1; DVB-S2; DVB-C1; DVB-C2. Each tuner is configured in software and so one tuner is configured for viewing and one for recording. Presumably, it should be possible to record two channels while watching a recording - assuming enough horsepower.

That is my understanding but I might be wrong. The single terrestrial input is because that can be shared internally, but the satellite inputs cannot be. We will find out when the recording feature is released.

This is correct based on the information provided, but for now the second tuner is disabled until the recording feature is enabled.

We know STB wants to get a look inside the box to see the workings.

Its an absolute steal for £89 and way better value than the edision, which I would have considered one of the more appropriately priced triple tuners.

Fantastic spot gkp1. Esata drive plugs inback rather than internal from what I can see. Also takes a SD flash card in the front (thats a first)

Most triple tuners have a 2 sat, 1 terrestrial tuner. In the case of the E2 boxes, the problematic issue with recording one saorview channel whilst watching another only arises where the other saorview channel is on the other mux. You still have the ability to watch other channels on the same Saorview mux or either of the 2 satellite inputs. How often is such an ocassion likely to arise ? We are led to believe that the Saorview connect box has split the single dvb-t input internally. Has that been confirmed yet ? The lad from EKT legged it when the questions started getting difficult.

Compare the E2 box to The Saorview Connect Box.

    E2

7 Day EPG on Satellite and Saorview
    Combined EPG
    Recording enabled
    2 Satellite Tuners Enabled.
Abiility to use autobouquets (so channels are replaced IF channels move frequency)
Card slots for EU sub packs.
Half the price (in the case of the Formuler F1 box linked above).

The Saorview Connect box has none of this. It does have a very nice IP playback of RTE programmes though. Pros and Cons. Theres a lot of cons with the Connect Box.

The E2 boxes are not made for Saorview only and there are multiple muxes on Freeview (up to 7 I understand).
The single DVB-T/2 extra tuner for the Formuler F1 is only £10 ...... if a dual tuner was another £10 it would be worth it even for Saorview.

There have been many occasions where there were two programmes I wanted to see on different muxes on Saorview. Thankfully I have the facility to record both muxes.

For the sake of a few pounds it is well worth having the second DVB-T/2 tuner.

Forget Saorview and Freeview. The specs are made for well established broadcast standards. The boxes are mass produced for EU markets. There is nothing strange in our spec.

The E2 box linked has only 3 inputs so there are limited configurations. Infact in the triple tuner box, there would be no limitation to add an additional USB DVB-T tuner so you'd then have 2 of each tuner. AND full functionality,

There are plenty of E2 boxes that have more than 3 set/puggable tuners. The one thats discussed is competively priced and meets the basic need of the user moving from Sky.

The question was are Saorview Connect boxes overpriced. Yes. Most definitely.

The second question is are there other boxes out there that do the things that people want for FTA television (combined 7 day epg/recording). The answer is also yes and at half the price.

Who really wants an RTE vanity box ? No one. They should have produced a box for the platform, the alternative FTA platform!!!

Can Saorview be run from just an internet connection or is that just for the on-demand stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,380 ✭✭✭STB.

    Just the ondemand/playback stuff.

The rest of it is just a bog standard dvb-t dvb-s2 combo box, without 7 day epg, without the ability to combine both sets of channels in one list and right now the inability to record......

My house hold doesn't watch a whole lot of TV and we've been using this box for a while now and I'm very happy with it. I know it doesn't suit everyones needs or demands but for me it's good.

I got rid of sky about 3 years and had a first gen walker box with an aireal in the attic, so I already had the setup to use a combi box. The menu is neat and easy to navigate, App works ok for reminders and as a remote, over all it works very well for my requirements.

You should try an E2 box.

You can record with them and actually see whats on all channels for the night in one grid.

With all due respect I hope you are not typical of the trial user. The people who these boxes should be targetted at should be people who watch and record TV. Or perhaps they didnt want answers!!!
