What about tackling? Kearney has been poor for years at that. He made several errors last Saturday too.

Really? How many tackles did he miss? And how many did he attempt?

What's the extent of Ryan's injuries. I thought it was just a bang and would take it easy today and return to training tomorrow.

no out this weekend, due back next week.

He's gone back to Munster for rehab

if so why did not rk try a garryowen or two, rather than constantly running into cover

the letting the ball slip thro his hands was criminal, if against a better team it would have resulted in a try, most teams will try the low ball to him for the rest of the season, or else slow bombs which will give runners time to reach him

Connacht have a week off this week and bealham has gone to Australia for the week. So it's understandable why he's not considered for a call up

31 years of age, 80 international caps, do you think a team might have tried these things at some point over the past decade?

Michael Bent called up per Cian Tracey.

Strange to omit someone like Bealham or Archer if there's a chance Bent will be used on the bench.

Edit: It appears he is just cover. Ok then.

Bit odd that Bent has suddenly leapfrogged Bealham but maybe it's as simple as Bent is still around and maybe Bealham has gone away during the break.

Well I guess that explains that's.

I figured the week off would have an impact. I will admit I was 50/50 as to whether I guessed he was away or hungover when Joe called.

Personally if in his shoes I would think I would have hung around hoping for a call up but that's just optimism.

Yeah can understand injured players / nowhere near international selection but if I was a recently capped player like bealham tiernan (sorry) heffernan is have hung around. Although bealham is from Australia and probably doesn't get to see his family too often

That makes far more sense. But is Herbst not back from injury?

Or is Schmidt picking his battles after the Aki fall out?

    Hang on.

A young fringe player, with (I presume) aspirations to get involved in the national set-up again, goes on holiday to Australia at the very time he's most likely to get a call??

He must have been told he wasn't in the frame.

Why overlook a better player to give a cheap first cap to Herbst.

Also Bent can cover both sides of the scrum in training which is useful given that Kilcoyne sat out today.

Maybe there was something going on and he wanted to see his family. If there was no injury no one would have been called up. Maybe he decided the risk of missing a call up would be worth it.

I have no idea, I'm only going on what was posted above.

Bealham's star has fallen considerably with Ireland, it would not surprise me if he was simply omitted.

My assumption is that since Ryan and Kilcoyne have both been reported with minor injuries and are in restricted training both due back very shortly Bent will be moving around and scrummaging in different positions depending on need.

Also maybe it's a short notice call up for training only and Bealham/archer are both enjoying their province's week off while Bent is in Dublin. Joe gets a phone call at 9am this morning Kilcoyne and Ryan are sitting out. He rings Bealham, he is on a day trip to some godforsaken island off the west coast or doesn't answer his phone, he rings bent 'when can you be in Carton', Bent's response is that he has no plans and can get in his car straight away.

Bealham is on holiday in OZ.

I know this was meant as a joke, but I've watched AH You a few times with Ulster this season and he has looked good.
Unfortunately he had surgery on his thumb in the last week or so and is out for 6 weeks.

He actually went to Inis Mor, but for obvious reasons he had no mobile signal when Joe rang...

No idea and it doesn't really matter.

The point is though that he's a liability as a defender even at provincial level, and has been for some time.

There's plenty of video clips to support that if you'd like to see them.

You mentioned mistakes with regards to tackles on Saturday.

Every player has defensive errors which is why overall stats are handier than taking a few one off videos.

A full back kicking a garryowen isn't always a good idea. Firstly it's pretty definitely giving possession back to the opposition. Secondly the full back has to follow it up to put his team mates onside so they can compete for it or so he can. And thirdly the run back is the better play because if he can do it quickly and securely, it's possession on or close to the gain line. No net gain for the opposition and a warning that they're not going to get any change out of the tactic.

Bent would play then right? Porter starts. I doubt they'll use Furlong.

I think so, no need to risk Furlong.

You made the claim so I was just asking for facts to back it up. I can't think of any bad misses. The two missed tackles that stand out for me from Saturday were Henshaw's on one of wingers in the first half that led to a break. The other was Healy got shrugged off but there was no real gain as the next player got the Bok.

If you have evidence of Kearney being a poor tackler on Saturday, I'd love to see it.

It was in jest alright but to be fair he was fully deserving of those caps he got at the time. He is painfully inconsistent though, was frustrating at Connacht how one week he'd put in a great shift and then the next week be a liability. Shame that he is out for that time though

Also I've no real issue with Bent getting called up, he is a handy player. Looking forward to seeing Porter start

Overall Kearney is at best an average defender. Not only "few missed". He's not a FB who gains any ground on contact, defence or attack. No Leinster fan who has a bit of honnesty would contest that.

He has other qualities. Schmidt thinks they matter more. Controversial, you can agree with him, but even so,  there's absolutely no reason to back the idea Rob is a good defender.
