No brainer for me: Aki 12, Henshaw 13. Ringrose injured makes it simple. Although I like what McCloskey has been bringing recently.

(Saying Henshaw 12, Aki 13 would be liking playing Rob Kearney 14 and Tommy Bowe 15 - why select players out of their best positions?)

    My €0.02

Not surprised. Aki is a 12 who can play 13. Henshaw is a 13 who can play 12.

This place will be delightful when he's in the squad for SA.

Maybe for next time LostArt. Conway and DK are much of a muchness for me, but Stockdale looks a real talent, potentially the best Irish winger since Bowe in his prime.

I don't have any major problem with this selection, but there is a genuine concern that we are waiting too long to blood players at international level. The likes of Conan, TOH, Ruddock, Marmion, a whole host of backrowers and back three players are all in their mid twenties and have not got a lot of international experience.

Joe has definitely expanded squad depth, but there are some players who have potentially slipped through the cracks in terms of getting their international careers started. I suppose that could be read as a period of strength in depth, but it could easily lead to some of these guys clearing off to England or France to make back and being lost to Irish rugby for good.

Joey Carberry, James Ryan and Jacob Stockdale are all in the 23 this weekend

The guys you mentioned are all behind some of the best Irish guys to ever play in their position. Its as simple as that.

I think there's far too much focus on this stuff tbh. We've capped a load of players and anyone who looks good enough gets capped early enough. Look at Furlong, Henderson, Ryan, VDF, Jackson, Carbery, Henshaw, Ringrose and Stockdale for example. At the end of the day we need to strike a balance between a number of different things. Winning games, having enough experience on the field to guide any newbies and capping players in positions we require them most. And we have to balance those in the face of injuries etc too. We're doing fine. A lot of guys who are not getting capped until their mid-20s simply aren't top class internationals so it's understandable.

Admittedly I haven't seen much of Leinster this season so far but how has James Ryan being going, has he started many games? I know he is a huge talent but just haven't seen much of him bar a few cameos I have seen so be interested to hear from people who have seen more of him in the flesh.

With all the Discussion on TOH, you have to wonder would would he not be better served moving to France or England and making as much money as possible.  He's clearly not gonna be Irelands starting 15 so he will always just be on his province Salary.

I actually think if he continues playing like he is at the moment he'll get decent game time in 2018.
Maybe. I am looking at it as a career that any one of us do. It's a short career and they don't make footballer money. Representing Ireland is a great honour but I'm sure the player is also thinking Central Contract or appearance payments when it comes to internationals. Could be a consideration for McCloskey if Aki goes well and ringrose comes back

The great thing about being at the match, not worrying about camera anthem bs!

Yeah, tbh, I actually think it is a strength in depth thing more than anything else, but until recently we rarely threw guys in under the age of 23-24. My real concern is if someone like Ruddock or Conan decides to take the cash. Those examples are clearly both players who could potentially be high end international players and never really be given the opportunity.

I'm going to be at the match, but I'll have it recorded so that I can get home and see the important bit

He started against Montpellier in Europe. He was very good against one of the best/biggest packs around

He has been excellent in his 5 appearances this season for Leinster, wasn't out of place in his 1st start at home against Montpellier.

It was pointed out on podcast that South Africa under the high ball are shocking....

Maybe just Maybe Joe might attack that route....who better under high ball than Rob? Even the SA journalist was having a laugh about it....

I expect a LOT of box kicks and Kearneys job is to get on end of them....

    1. This is the WORST way to announce teams and they need to stop doing this.

    2. Leyds starting is a GREAT excuse to remember this moment of absolute brilliance:

That's the same pack that lost to the ABs by a point, right? Hmmmm....

    Nice effort, but:

"Why the f**k doesn't Dave Kearney ever throw a pass like that"

Is the far more likely response.

And this is the country that outscored us on technology in our RWC bid, right? :pac:

He'll be blindside flanker. In South Africa you wear hats on your feet, burgers eat people and blindsides wear 7 on their jersey.

I think we're gonna have to be able to keep the ball alive. Big set piece selection.

Big big performance needed from our tight 5. Consistent clean quick ball in SA's half. Big day for Healy, Best, Furlong, Toner, Hendo. And our back row need to watch theirs like hawks, two opensides starting for them.

I’ll raise you on that - Ulster’s 360 photos that you have to awkwardly pan around to see the entire team are WAY worse.

They used their NIQ flanker budget on that 360 image...

    Big set piece selection.

I’ve a bad feeling our lineout is going to be a big weakness.

After the summer tour, Donnacha Ryan met with him. Instead of shaking his hand he went up to him and kissed him on the cheek. A bit odd, no doubt. Then a few of the Munster boys grabbed him and gave him a going over before wrapping him in a Munster flag and locking him in the tunnel in Thomond.

The Munster covered the tunnel with one of the kit cages so nobody walking past would see him. After three days they went back to check on him, rolled back the cage and he was gone aside from the flag lying on the floor in shreds. Ryan was later seen in Paris, counting a number of pieces of silver.

He appeared again at the RDS to shock and amazement with his miracles. He skittled Montpellier out of the way flipping them easily and roaring at them for taking huge sums of money for their employment and turning the RDS into a "house of trade".

Now, he is seated at the right hand of BOD. He has come again in glory to judge the living and the Ulster academy and his career shall have no end.

Hey look, Wilco Louw is named on the bench for SA. Got his first cap in the past month. The bloke who was strongly rumoured to be Munster's project player signing but then all went quiet and he was capped

Nope, no conflict of interest there for Rassie Erasmus over the past few months!

No change in the price since the teams were announced, bookies have us 5 point favourites.
