Hi all. A little bit of help would be appreciated here.
So I bought a 04 vitara off Someone living in the UK.
She was in Ireland and decided to sell the car and go travelling.
So the car was here on the 20th of June (she has family here who she was visiting before leaving)
I purchased the car on the 24th august.
Next silly mistake was that the owner sent the v5c form to the DVLA and I only got it back last week.
I have the vrt inspection on Tuesday.
I have a copy of her ferry ticket and a letter from the owner explaining what happened and why the car was in the country for long before I purchased the vehicle

Will I be looking at extra charges?

Had the VRT today in Waterford,
Had all the forms but at first she wasnt accepting my Proof of address because it looked like it was insurance from Zurich, but she accepted it when I showed her it was actually my pension statement from a financial institute.

There was a 76euro fine because the car was in the country since june but she said I should get that back if I appeal because I have a letter from the owner and the ferry ticket isnt in my name.

They never even took one of the forms I filled out that I had to download off the site? whats the point of that?

This was pointed out to a named individual in Applus in December 2016. He said that he would rectify it. Interesting to hear that their website hasn't changed.

Mind you, they do the same with the NCT test. The email you receive from them states....

    9. This letter of confirmation is brought to the test centre on the day of your test.

They never ask for it in Naas.

I'm looking at a Qashqai from a main dealer that will come as 'Manufacture Approved' with 12 month Nissan Europe Warranty that will apply here in Ireland. The car has the following:

This car is a Nissan CARED4 used vehicle. A Manufacturer Approved Nissan comes with:
    - Detailed checks for peace of mind
    - Minimum 12 months' warranty
    - 30-Day/1,000 mile exchange promise
    - You + Nissan CARE, the same package that comes with all our new cars

With all that in mind I'm wondering if I really need to do a full AA check.

    What do you think?

Mechanically I'm sure it is fine and you have the warranty, but how do you know one side of the car has not been re-sprayed due to keying? Even if it has the dealer will never tell you. Just an example but its always good to have an independent set of of eyes on the car.

Ya that's a fair point. I guess my thinking here it that the car is under the Nissan Cared4 scheme which is the same as the Nissan Gold Standard here in Ireland, where they claim to get used cars back to as New standard.

It's a 151 Qashqai with only 28,000 miles, so with buying direct from Nissan main dealer I was hoping I can avoid the car check costs.

Get the check, it will add value when you go to sell it on in a few years time, shows greater assurance in the car (IMHO)

I bought a two year old Nissan in NI earlier this year from a main dealer. It still had 12 months Nissan warranty so I didn't bother with an RAC / AA check. I did do a motorcheck type report to check the history and I questioned the dealer as well. If I was buying the same car from a dealer in the South I wouldnt have bothered with an independent inspection either. Six months later no problems other than the usual AC issue with these which was fixed under warranty by my local Nissan dealer.

Type up a letter seeking refund of UK road tax that most garages will get you to pay online before leaving [/COLOR]

What details does this letter need to have? Car reg, my address, my bank A/C details and details of how I just had the car in the UK for a number of hours?
I presume it's made out to the DVLA and I need to get the garage I'm buying from to send it off when they sent their part of the V5C form into the DVLA?

I have a question regarding changing over insurance, I want to sell my current car first then go over and buy, how do I get insured on the new car, you cant take out insurance on UK plates.
Last time I sold my car afterwards so just changed over my insurance to new car.

they don't send any part of the V5C into the DVLA , they should hand it to you.

They'll cover you on British plates for 30 days generally

I thought they send one part of it to DVLA with me keeping the rest?

They can send section 11, the notification of permanent export. Just make sure you take everything else, my V5C was accepted with no issue by the VRT crowd with it missing the export section. (This was in May I think)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,795 ✭✭✭Isambard

no that section is for the registered owner to export the car themselves. It doesn't make any difference to re-registering it here if they do send it off, but that isn't what that section is for strictly.

if you have a policy already. I'd be selling my car so would effectively be ending my policy

Thanks I'll aim to take to whole form.

So for UK tax, I'm buying from main dealer so looks like I'll have to tax for 6 months. I'll try to get around this again in person, but I think they'll make me tax it.

For the refund do I sent the DVLA a letter? Or is it automatic once they mark the car as permanently exported?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 896 ✭✭✭IrishGrimReaper

You have to send a letter I believe.

Having just bought from a main UK dealer with no tax and no mention of it, I took a chance and drove out of the country. Maybe they should have asked, but they didn't. The tax is out by about a month.

Anybody ever use Revolut to purchase a car in the UK? There is a car supermarket that accept debit cards without charging a fee and I figure they would probably be better (cheaper rates, no fees) than using something like Transfermate.

Revolut have a max transfer amount per day/days so unless it falls below that its not going to be much use. Think its 5K every 4 days.
Card spending is limited to £30,000 or equivalent per year with a sublimit of £5,000 or equivalent per 96 hours meaning that you cannot exceed £5,000 or equivalent in card spending in a 96 hour period. Cash withdrawals from ATMs are limited to £500 or equivalent per day."

Ah, for some reason I thought it was every 5k per day (same as my bank). Thanks for the information, should have spotted that myself :o

I'm trying to estimate the VRT on a car I'm looking at in the UK, but the exact model is not on the revenue website. There are other models I could compare it to, but there are substantial differences in the figures.

Any idea how I would go about estimating the VRT in this case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,548 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Have a look at what similar cars over here are asking. Otherwise you will need to roll up with it before they will give you a figure.

Is that not just getting it's data from Revenue's offical VRT database?

    Hi

I just want to give you my experience of buying a car in UK.

I went to the revenue.ie VRT calculator and entered the nearest possible details for the car I was interested in. It gave me an estimate of €844 for VRT.

I went ahead and purchased the car and on my return I proceeded with paying the VRT. The actual bill I was given was €1800. I had to pay this obviously but it was a shock and I am now appealing this amount.

To do some further research I went to the independent website vrt.ie and entered my details. For a charge of €2 they gave me an estimate of €760 for VRT. They also have what they call an independent review which costs €5. This estimate produced a value of €1790 which was much nearer the actual charge.

This story is just to warn potential buyers to be aware. Do your research.

    Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend a company to delivery a van to Ireland from Leeds please. If had to could collect at a port if that was all that was available.
