Tutors for MIS 30100: Information Management

Information Management MIS30100 is an undergraduate module offered by the College of Business that introduces students to the fundamentals of information management. Tutors play a central role in this module as there is a substantial component of learning-by-doing. The aim of the tutorials is to build students’ practical capacity to understand and develop IT tools for real organisations

In the first part of this module, tutors teach Microsoft Access and assist students in clarifying and applying the basic concepts of data management. In the second part of the module, tutors support student teams of 3 or 4 students as they design and develop a functioning information system. The teams are required to create their own database derived from user requirements from real-life cases chosen by the team. All course materials are provided to tutors.

The tutorials are held in the Quinn School of Business on Belfield Campus in semester one (September to November). There are 16 two-hour tutorial slots per week (32 hours), with 50 students in each slot. The number of tutors per class is doubled in the second half of the term. Tutor responsibilities are as follows:

    1. Teaching the basics of Microsoft Access (based on materials already developed).

    2. Coaching student teams (12-15 per tutorial slot) in collecting user requirements, due on week 7.

    3. Coaching student teams (12-15 per tutorial slot) in creating their own database derived from user requirements, due on week 10.

    4. Following a pre-defined scheme, assessing student teams’ submissions (about 24-30 per tutorial) by mid-December.

    5. Assessing individual students’ contribution in the last two weeks of term.

Payment will be based on the number of contact hours multiplied by 1.5, to allow for the time involved in preparing, coaching and assessing.

We require 3 or 4 tutors to commit to teaching for the full 12 weeks, and to take between 4 and 8 tutorial slots per week. In addition to the tasks identified above, these tutors will also have the following responsibilities:

Keeping track of students’ attendance throughout the whole term.
Managing relevant functions of Blackboard (the online learning environment).
    Coordinating other tutors.
Based on Blackboard rubrics, providing feedback to students on their assignments as requested (often via email).

Payment for these tutors will be based on the number of contact hours multiplied by 2.0, to allow for the time involved in these additional tasks.

In all cases, we will endeavour to share the workload to accommodate different needs and individual availability. The university timetable is not available yet, but there is flexibility to accommodate different preferred working times (mornings, afternoons, many tutorials in a few days or spread more evenly through the week).

    Tutor requirements:

    1. Excellent knowledge of MS Access

    2. Work experience in the design and development of databases

    3. Experience in coaching teams

    4. Good knowledge of database management systems fundamentals, SQL in particular.

    5. Excellent coordination and communications skills.

Previous experience in university education is considered a plus.

Apply by emailing your CV to gianluca.miscione at ucd dot ie no later than Friday, April 21st 2017

(Tentatively, interviews will be on the first week of May)

    Hi all,

The company I work for have the following part-time vacancy which may suit students with excellent English. We recruited someone in this role in February and now we are increasing our content production and looking for a second suitable person.

    €12 ph.

We are looking for a reliable person who is able to follow a structured template of content. They will produce content which can be published each day on our website.

Experience in online casinos and in particular, slot machines, would be an advantage.

This role can be performed remotely by the right candidate.

It is a temporary part-time role and would certainly suit college students as well (approx. 15 hrs per week).

Your English must be of an excellent standard and if you are applying we will provide you with some exercises to see if you are suited to the role.

Please PM me for further details.

I have worked in a company here in Germany for 10 years now. Has been great. Even on a moderate salary I have a comfortable and stable and happy life here. There is even 2 Irish bars in my city :) Though I hear Salaries around Germany are usually somewhat better than the company I am in, I feel not inclined to change as I am happy here with the company, the people, and the work-life balance.

People come and go in IT companies all the time but recently by a series of coincidences 4 of our people left, two senior level and two medium level. From two different departments. My boss is looking for replacements at present so I thought it would be no harm to mention that here in case anyone wants to send me applications, or ask questions, that I can forward on to him.

It is an E-Commerce company and the two departments were back end and front end. Back End work heavily with Java, SQL and associated. Front end your usual stack. Junior and Senior roles.

As I say I am just handing on applications for anyone interested, so not invested myself in the hunt. But it would be nice to see some more Irish Blood around here :) Currently the IT Department is about 5 Germans, a Serbian and a Bosnian (thankfully getting on very well indeed) an Italian and a White Russian and me :)

So if anyone has associated CVs they have been sending out, feel free to contact me and send one on.
