Tempting, although noticed that the salary is very poor and the duties aren't as appealing as I initially thought.

Think it’s come up maybe once or twice since the 1509 campaign. Last time they were only giving out applications to people who had attended an info day/evening or whatever. Think it’s 2 years probation, then you do GV. There was a guy at my PCA who said he was in it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭Homer01

Personally I wouldn't. I considered it last year while obviously still in 1509 but thought better of it.

Ultimately you are security with firearms and if you are happy with that then go for it but it's not a career in policing. You can't do a few years there and transfer to the PSNI.

At least with the Harbour Police you have a more varied role.

Just dug out the info pack from last time.
One of FAQ's was 'Will I be guaranteed a job when I complete training?'
The answer was ' The initial contract is for the period of the student programme. However, on successful completion of the programme and vacancies are available, these will be offered.'

I had applied for it before but withdrew when I received more information. I personally think it's just the airports way of cutting costs by having "student officers" on 2 year contract. And then no obligation to keep them on after. Pay works out not more than £7ph.
I also know someone who had applied to it maybe a year or two ago and had recently retired from RAF police and he was told he didn't have enough relevant experience lol.

Last time was for two posts starting last June so they are either growing or losing people.

It might well be a great job but it's not true policing in my opinion.

If I remember correctly they had quite a high eyesight standard compared to PSNI. Also remember them being very vague about the salary so at least it's there right from the start.

I’d say the same as harbour police making people pay for training if they leave within 3 years. That’s probably why they do GV after 2 years. Maybe have retention problems. That said if you guys are waiting to apply for the new PSNI campaign it’s surely worth a shot

Ps I know you’re not waiting homer :D

Hi guys just seem this tonight does anybody know if you are armed in this role? Also if you are able to take your firearm home as a ppw like the psni? I wouldn't want to apply and then get sent off home with no gun and be a sitting duck! .lol

You are armed on duty with a glock 17 same as PSNI.
As BIA constabulary is the last private airport police force in the UK, rifles are not issued. PSNI deal with all major incidents and all specialist roles such as dogs etc.
Off duty I'm not sure about the firearm. But even if you wernt allowed to take the issued firearm home you would be able to buy a pistol privately and get it on your firearms licence as a PPW. (As long as firearms and explo branch considered you under threat.)

Thanks for the info!! I would like the job but nowhere near as much as the psni! You would get far more variety in the psni. This would just be a second option "just incase"

Nik9 just wondering would you have to be a full constable to have a firearm or would the student officer be traind to use and carry them too?

Honestly I don't know the whole ins and outs of it. The PSNI do train BIA constabulary for firearms. But no idea at what point in your training. The information packs don't give alot of details about training, if it's before your 2year start or during your to years.
Also just remember if you do join just because you are "police" doesn't mean you are a full constable. BIAC are a private police force and have no jurisdiction outside of the airport. You work directly for the airport and not the home office like all other UK police forces/services. So there is no chance of ever transferring.

Thanks! To be honest it's not sounding like the best option!! Ye would be far better off just in the psni on a whole!

They are more of an armed security force. If it's something like that you'd be Interested in then go for it but the MOD Police and CNC do simlar roles but far better training and a higher wage lol. BIA pay is working out min wage.

That end of it defo interests me I would do that in a heart beat the problem is I want to do more than that as well I want to actually help people when they are in need weather that be domestic abuse, rtc, drug raid, protecting people in general everywhere, traffic stops, etc etc, you don't get that in this role unfortunately! Il do it as a back up but I will concertante on the psni one!

You are not armed until after you've been through GV! And it's 100% accurate to describe the job as armed security guarding.

There is no real variety to the role and you can't proceed past the rank of Sargeant. The starting salary it's definitely suited to the 18-20s age bracket.

Thanks for the info!! Tbh it sounds a bit rubbish lol so really you have to wait 2 years 6 months until your really doing the job! I wonder what they be doing in that time before gv!!

I've something of an insight but the job should basically be advertised as an "apprentice"

You do however get to drive the police vehicles on the airport property, wear the full uniform but have no duty belt cuffs, CS or handgun ect until after GV.

You've come to the right place to share it mate lol. I wonder why they don't just put you through gv at the start and get you up and going properly! They are going to put people off myself included having to wait 2 years before you actually do the job! What's the recruitment process like? They give you next to no info About it!

The recruitment process is similar to the airport fire service.

    • Apply
    • Interview
    • Job offer
    • Medical & Drugs testing
    • Police Vetting
    • 5 year employment for airport staff pass • Appointment as student police.

Because they are privately run by the airport it's a similar set up to the harbour police with the application process run by a HR department and the questions asked on it.

With the Airport Fire Service within your contact if you leave within I think it's 3 years of starting you have to repay the cost of the training. The two year period with the police is prior to someone who is due to retire.

Re the eyesight standards and colour vision that's to do with driving on and around the runway.

    Thanks for the that!!
Could you clarify what you mean by 5 year employment pass? Is that like a 5 year contract or somthing?
It sounds like it is a big commitment to make for very little in return! Your kind of stuck there for 3 years!!

Staff directly working for the airport and service providers have to provide a 5 year employment history to get a security pass and all reference are then contacted.

It's more so to do with the Airport regulators. Those links will give you a better idea.

Hey does anyone who has applied for this, know when the short listing letters will be sent out ? And also what next stage will be ? Remember seeing something about a written assessment ?

When I applied during last year's recruitment I had an acknowledgement letter within a week and then the next letter within 3-4weeks. But then I withdrew from the process so can't help beyond that sorry.

Despite the discussions above regarding what this job entails, and whether you're just an 'armed security guard' - Has anyone who applied for this heard back from the airport yet?
