Likewise sorry to hear that but sounds like the right call. You weren't the only one who dropped of my tracker on Sunday - think I cheered and worried in equal measure!!!

Looks like we had very similar experiences on Sunday... and at the same point too! Think there was some sort of hex on St Lawrence's rd.

Also... don't forget you probably hadn't fully recovered from that illness too...

    On we go...

    Tuesday 31st October- 6 Miles

DOMS almost gone so it's time to get back on the road for me. This was neither an easy run or flat to the board but a little piece of me felt like absolutely hammering it as what happened on Sunday seems to have sunk in a bit today as I had a lot of time to think about it due to being off work. Ended up being somewhere in the middle, energy still wasn't great but definitely better.

    Where to now?:

Honestly not sure yet, I had a plan in place to keep the motivation going post-DCM but I didn't really expect what transpired so that throws a spanner in the works as it has me thinking about another attempt, not Clonakilty like my immediate post race thoughts were leading me to but maybe a spring marathon, Rotterdam is in the forefront of my mind but one of the lads asked me would I go to London with him. I'm not sure about that yet as my original post-race target was the Adare 10k in February and it would be as sweet as anywhere to run well there.

I'm still going to run the early part of the Original plan which is the Waterford half in a couple of weeks followed by the Newmarket 5k. But I need to have a chat with coach about getting more serious about my training, He set me up perfectly for Dublin all things considered where I was coming from and it's testament to him that I'm still on the wagon despite the hiccups but next time I come to a goal race, I want to make sure that I'm in such good shape that even a terrible day won't scupper my chances of running a PB.

Hard luck too Anna. If there's any silver lining to it all, it's that there's always another shot at it in running.

I was disappointed for you when I heard the result. The only thing that comes to mind is that you were nowhere near fully recovered from your recent illness. Although I have been known to "grind it out" when things have gone bad for me, I think in this situation you made the right call - although you probably don't need me to tell you that.
Onto more positive things - there's a good chance I'll be in Newmarket myself for a crack off the 5k PB so maybe I'll see you there.

Maybe so HBS, I don't know to be honest as I felt ok for a few days before but it might not of been fully gone, still don't think it explains how bad I felt at a pace that should be a jog in a race. I think I made a lot of mistakes on top of that on the run in to the race. My nutrition was shocking to be honest as I had a shooting pain in my stomach for the two days before where I could hardly breath or swallow without pain. I reckon it was my psaos as the pain moved around from the inside of my hip to my side and onto my back. It was fine on the day though. It is what it is now and I can't go back so time to look forward and see what I can do this cycle.

Rocket fast course in Newmarket, you'll demolish your PB there:)

Wednesday 1st November- 7 Miles Easy

Few loops around town in the light, must be the first time in 2 years:pac:. My legs felt decent today, not empty anyway which was nice. Kept the HR under 150 and tried to avoid plodding as much as possible at that pace. Going to run a 5k tomorrow just out of interest, have no huge expectations going into it as I've done no speedwork bar one or two sessions this year so not going to light it up but would like to see what's what.

Sorry to hear you had a bad day , you gave me and others great advice in the novices thread. I can’t give running advice but can relate to what you say totally about not been able to hold pace , I was sick the week or so before DCM and on antibiotics , in the half marathon at the start I was looking at watch and cruising at 4:10 pace in the marathon I tried to run fast to catch pacers and couldn’t run a faster km than 4:32 or something and I was breathing very hard and couldn’t even hold it .

Do not underestimate the effect of been ill on your body , I was back at the doctor this week and asked him would antibiotics or illness have made me slower he said yes definitely much slower. I don’t totally trust doctors so googled it and dr google says horses given antibiotics have been measured up to 10miles an hour slower .

Put it down to illness and your body protecting itself , my cough was nearly gone before DCM now it’s in bits seems to be full on chest infection so you no doubt made the wise move.

Cheers E. I'm pretty sure that's some running advice;). Fair play on Sunday, you got a great result all the same and no doubt it's only the start for you.

The curse of the 2017 Novices thread contributors got you pretty bad. I hope the trip back into town wasn't too grim.

Waterford sounds like a good use of your training and enjoy tomorrow's 5k blowout!

Well done on Sunday man, you nailed it.

    Thursday 2nd November-6 inc. UL 5k(18:32)

3 and a half years in the making but I finally got the hoodoo off my back tonight and ran a PB:D. By the slimmest of margins of 2 seconds but that's huge for me. First Mile down in 5:48, was feeling comfortable and knew it was on and that I'd just have to grind it out, wasn't letting this one slip away and some of my self talk over the last mile was hilarious looking back. Absolutely beaming right now and it puts my mind at ease about Sunday as well.

Cheers lads, apparently there was a problem with the clock as well and I was given 18:34 but the first woman who finished behind me in the race and the results was given 18:28 after showing her watch time. it's not official but that means I ran low 18:20's:). Even better again.

Cheers Folks! The result more than makes up for the marathon, it makes the last few months all worth it and justifies my decision to pull up to myself. A lot of wishing for forward progress over the last few years, about time I finally done it:pac:.

Cheers Healy! That's still the plan anyway man. Hopefully, take down another PB that stood too long.

You thinking about having a go? A bit of competition wouldn't hurt either of us;)

Thanks AMK! Sorry to see you didn't get the result you wanted either. I think tang summed it up perfectly in your log, no doubt you'll be back and I think there's a lot more to come judging by what I've seen you do over the last few years. Head up!

hahahaha...I think hell is freezing over:)

Just a quick catchup in case this log slips into a winter slumber.

    Saturday 4th November- 7 Miles Easy(8:32)

    Sunday 5th November- 5 Miles Easy(8:27)

    Tuesday 6th November- 6 Miles Easy(untimed)

    Wednesday 7th November- 5 Miles Easy(8:37)

Felt the cold for the first time tonight and the lungs didn't like it one bit tbh, can already feel the seasonal asthma picking up which makes things a bit difficult over the winter, that really only leaves me one option which should help me to no end in coping with it and that's to do what I should of done a long time ago and pack in the smokes once and for all. Now feels like a better time than ever to call it a day so that's my number one priority right now.

After a week and a bit of thinking about where I'm going training wise, I've decided to target the Adare 10k at the end of February and then make a return to the track for the Spring/Summer, the Marathon can wait for another while as last week's 5k has me thinking about what's possible at the 5/10k with some specific training and a few months more consistency under my belt, I think I can run a lot faster than maybe I thought so I'd like to see what happens. For the track season, as much as I'd love to focus on the steeplechase again, It's really not an option down here especially since it was completely dropped from the Munster Champs last year and they can never get the numbers at the graded meets to even run the race. Unfortunately, it's a niche event and I can't really base a season around an event that might not even happen once but I'm more than happy to run the 1500/5000 and work on some speed. In the meantime, planned races are:

    Waterford Half
    Newmarket 5k
    John Treacy 10
    Adare 10k

But first, I may get back to a bit of mudlarking this weekend at Munster Senior XC in the hope of bettering my 2015 PB of third last:pac:

Thursday 9th November- 6 Miles inc. UL 5k(18:39)

Plan was to do Munster Senior this weekend but it turns out I missed the entry deadline so I took another a shot at this series. A bit slower this week but a better performance all round and even managed to finish ahead of a few people who beat me last week. Conditions weren't great with the slick paths a neck tight turns but the strong headwind in the second half put a stop to any fast times after a quick aided first mile. Very happy with it as my legs didn't feel as snappy as last week but I ran well. I think the sub-18 is a definite possibility in Newmarket if I keep progressing like this as I don't think I'm far off it as it is:)

There was another mess up with my time this week. I'm down as 19:35 and a good few positions behind where I finished on the results:confused:. The only thing I can think of is that they accidently wrote down 19 instead of 18 but I don't know how the positions are so out of whack as the guy who actually finished a few seconds in front of me has the correct time and place as does the guy behind me. But anyway, I know I finished a shade under 18:40 and can't be arsed following it up and will just wait until Newmarket to post an actual official 5k time.

    Friday 10th November- 7 Miles Easy(8:24)

Surprisingly fresh and a bit quicker than normal

Sunday 12th November- 10 Mile Long Run

I honestly can't remember the last time I ran this short of a long run, I'm thinking maybe early June, even managed 11 in Dublin:pac: so these short ones are feeling much easier now. The cold air being the only real difficulty in getting it done again as I left it late this evening. Heard that dehydration can be an issue with burning lungs on top of all the other stuff so something to keep an eye on as well.

Tomorrow is b-day for the smoking so hopefully that all goes to plan, going to take it one day at a time and see what happens
