Not a big follower of the club scene, think yesterday was my first county senior final. Hardly an amazing game but held my interest. Mitchels maybe didn't have Tubber's margquee forwards but looked stronger in the round, there was always a sense that Tubber would need a goal to win.

Oh an a shout out to the maniac who tried to pass me on a bend outside Ballyvary, presumably in a mad rush to catch the start of the intermediate game. Why do big GAA games bring this element out on the roads?

Stephen Rochford is likely to be confirmed as Mayo manager in 2018 at a county board meeting expected to take place tomorrow.
Rochford said in the aftermath of last month's All-Ireland final defeat to Dublin that he would take the month of October to consider his future. However, that decision appears to have been taken with Rochford on the cusp of agreeing to fulfil the final year of his initial three-year agreement.
There is no firm indication yet that Donie Buckley and Tony McEntee will be part of the backroom team but the expectation is that, despite the extensive travel involved for them, they will rejoin Rochford in seeing out the term.

Buckley has been involved for the last five years and had previously worked with James Horan and joint-managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly.
commute He is based in Ennis but the opening of the new motorway through Galway it will make his commute that bit easier. McEntee came on board in late 2015 with Rochford.

Strength and conditioning coach Barry Solan may have to take a reduced role in the future because of his ongoing commitments to Arsenal in a similar role. Solan had been flying in and out at weekend for much of last year with Conor Finn overseeing much of the fitness work in between and he looks like he will take a step forward.
Andy Moran committed quickly to 2018 but after Ballintubber's loss in Sunday's county final Alan Dillon may opt to bring his inter-county career to a close.

Meanwhile, Aidan O'Shea will be named as Irish International Rules captain tomorrow for the two-Test series with Australia next month, the first Mayo man to have the role.
O'Shea will be joined by defensive colleagues Brendan Harrison and Chris Barrett.

Same as,I've heard many including my parents say he was probably the greatest. My Mum should know since she's from his home town.He was apparently not treated as well as he should have been by the GAA.

Unfortunately I know of no videos.

Can't argue with that,I have no direct knowledge of the exploits of the two sadly deceased greats.Langan was on the team of the century chosen by the GAA in the centenary year 1984 and was a member of probably the greatest Mayo team ever outside the team of the 1930s.He was by all accounts some full forward.

We all know how good Ciaran Mc was and all the reports are that Joe Corcoran was a genius.

Best of luck to Cora in her new move to Oz. Will she ever play for Mayo ladies again who knows, but she owes us nothing.

Cora was on off the ball last night. She will be back in April and (reading between the lines) will play for Mayo if body is ok and wanted by new management, but no decision made as yet.

Golden snippet: Cora says Andy Moran said to her about the retirement issue a while back "why would you retire if you are still fit and can still play"!

Great! Andy will be around for a good while then :D

We're at our three trophies a year maximum limit. Any more trophies or medals for our lot, and we'll have to start paying VAT charges on silver polish. :p

I hear that the provincial and All Ireland silver is heavy stuff lots of reps this year.

Messing aside, IMO the compromised rules was over as a competition once the rules were changed far too much to save the Irish lads getting destroyed.

The hurling Shinty is the same but in the Scott's favour this time

All IMO the Mayo lads would do well to sit this one out too. A parade for the younger Irish players and no where near a fair competition like it was when it started. Winning it is meaningless the best Australian players knock the sh1t out of us.

I disagree. It needed changing. The gaa guys play a certain way, in respect to the way guys are allowed to tackle. When that was taken away, the instinctive style of a gaa player in possession was playing right into the aussies hands. It gave them a huge advantage in open play. I think you are only saying the above to knock the series, and so justify certain counties refusing to take part.

All credit to the lads who have put themselves forward for it. As for knocking the sh!t out of the opposition, there was more of that going on in the AI final than there was in the last series...
Listen, just call a spade a spade, the dubs have opted out en masse, and it isn't the first time. Last time out in Oz, James McCarthy must have missed the memo (I give him great credit for going). It's poor form and reflects badly as regards their interest in the gaa as a whole, rather than just their own doorstep. If we just state that and move on - no problem.
But please, spare us this mealy-mouthed narrative that has been coming out of Dublin since it was announced that no Dublin player was going to take part, where you are constantly trying to pick holes in the thing to justify your mass-refusal to represent your country. Nobody is buying it and nobody wants to hear it.

Surly it is fear of injury that they have pulled out and Aig can’t be having there superstars coming home with a big plastic boot on there leg.
It’s either that or there sick from all the drinking after All Ireland

The 'mealy-mouthed' narrative appears to be coming from people who are not Dubs. I think most Dublin supporters are happy with the decision not to participate and are more interested in club fixtures and getting the squad ready for the league and the stuff that actually matters.

Interesting.... to be fair he's had a difficult run with injury and family bereavement. Still possible he could be picked up elsewhere though but I'd love to seem back in the green and red. Had great promise as a minor.

Or maybe, they (the small handful of players that Kernan invited in to the squad, not the entire Dublin panel) actually do have club and work commitments, that prevent them from pissing off to Oz for 3 weeks. James McCarthy (along with 5 other Dublin players) is playing in a club final on Monday. He has already said he can't get more time off work. What do you want him to do - not play in his county final, or not go away with the Dubs on their team holiday in December, just so he can participate in the Aussie lark? Or both? Grand, I'll tell him that so.

Of all the silly Dublin conspiracies out there, their not participating because AIG told them not to, has to be one of the daftest yet. Funny how big, bad, AIG had no trouble with Dubs being on the Aussie Rules panel, when the games were here 2 years ago, eh?

U-21 starting this weekend in Mayo. Who will be strong? Westport and Claremorris had very young senior teams so must be very strong at U-21. Aughamore going for three in a row (i think). Mitchels should be decent. Anyone else? Knockmore /Kiltimagh? No mayo senior players u-21 so could be a chance for a few unknown names to show a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭davegrohl48

It's between Claremorris and Westport I think.
Castlebar and Moy Davitts strong but hampered by senior/inter club so hard for them to be at their best.
Knockmore and Aghamore good forward lines.
    Charlestown potentially good forward line.
Aghamore a lot of experience at u21.
Dinger of a competition in my view.
    Super competitive.

I don't know how you figure that. There is no evidence of it.

As for the Dub fans, Im just wondering where was all this dismissive talk of the series when Brogan was captain and there was a raft of dubs on the squad last time out? Funny it is only appearing now?

Stoner, you don't give people on the boards enough credit, everyone can see they pulled out collectively - fair enough if that is what they want to do - just have the honesty to admit it though. You are often saying how the posters on boards are by in large genuine gaa folk, so why not treat them as such?

The thing is they deserve criticism for doing it, same as anyone else would if they done the same. I accept some players wont be able to go, but not all of them ffs.

As for your spiel about a 'handful of players' - 10 players, a fair bit more than a handful. No other county has as many players invited to take part in fact. Every county has club commitments, every county player has a job. They flaked out, they deserve a bit of criticism for doing so, so be it. These attempts to control the narrative and veer it away from any criticism of the players but rather onto the game itself is highly disingenuous.
