This is from the Department of Social Welfare about the use of the PSC when applying for a passport:
The Passport Service currently requires a photocopy of the PSC for first time adult applicants and those replacing lost, stolen or damaged passports that were issued prior to 2005. A photocopy of the PSC is currently required as evidence that the applicant is SAFE 2 registered, but the Passport Service does not require nor does it utilise the security features of the card itself.
    That sounds worthwhile.

Can you imagine the uproar from the usual suspects though. Bad enough with the "ID card by stealth".

Only a CITIZEN is entitled to an EU travel ID card.

Anyone legally living in ROI can apply for a PSC card.

I haven't been invited to get this card, although I have to admit, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

My only problem is with the "Law & Order Party" (lol) making this card obligatory, without legislation, in order for a citizen to receive their statutory entitlements.

The basic test for any civilised government is whether or not it obeys its own rules.

The government seem to be overstepping their powers here, and denying pensioners their income without a second thought. That's not indicative of a government which respects the Rule of Law.

The legal basis for this card could be established in the morning, if the Oireachtas agreed with it. What really irks me is that they just don't care enough to follow a democratic procedure.

How long does it take for the PSC to be issued?
I got a letter saying that because they had my driving licence photo on file, they could use that for the PSC and to sign a waiver to allow them to use that for the card to be issued. Did that about 2 months ago and returned the form, but no sign of the card since.
Anyone have an idea of the leadtimes on this?

    Thanks.

i filled that in 3 or 4 months ago and sent it back. havent received the card yet. i just phoned them there and they said it was only sent out on the 17th of this month. they appear to be a little behind.

Ah, I missed that development. Good to hear.

Hopefully they will now institute correct procedures before stopping any other pensioner's income.

If so, then the card is a welcome development in my view. I have never properly understood why there is such opposition to identity cards in the UK and Ireland, whilst in the rest of the EU, they are widely accepted as a convenient and reliable identity document.

The Germans don't leave the house without some form of ID . And are obliged to show it if asked by the Polizie

If anyone wants to access services from the State, then the State is entitled to verify the identity of the recipient. They have decided that this is the format which best fulfills their requirements. If it stops the usual suspects from defrauding us with multiple or bogus SW claims, then I'm all for it.

Got mine in a couple of days. Different offices different processing times.

Not sure why that is considered a big problem. State bodies were asked to prevent fraud and so they do. Now people are giving out about how that inconveniences them. You can't win.

You could hand out free €50 notes tomorrow. Someone will complain about it.

    did you apply in person?

Actually they are only obliged to own one of the 2 official forms of ID. There is no actual legal obligation to carry it.

The police will go back to your house if you don't have it if asked. But there is no actual law that says you must carry ID at all times.

I did say obliged to show it if asked by the Police . Yes , not right then but obliged to show it if asked
The vast majority of Germans and definitely in Berlin carry ID . Then again Berliners were slightly paranoid about being able to show ID. Probably a left over from the cold war occupation

Was there a big demand to fix driver theory test fraud? Or passport fraud?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,767 ✭✭✭pawrick

Got a letter asking if they could use my driving licence picture for one of these cards last month (which i only remembered today as I have no reason to use one), I've no problem with the concept of an ID card but yet again much like Irish water the implementation has been terrible.
Why do we need a separate driving licence, public services card and passport? With the the embedded chips can they not be used for all these services, turning on/off the relevant parts which apply rather than carry around separate cards? Same applies to the new passport cards which you cant get unless you also have a book type passport and are valid for only half the amount of time!

Myself and Doola didnt apply in person. We simply got a form in the post asking for our permission to use our driving licence info to create a PSC. that is the process that has a backlog. presumably they are doing them when they are not creating cards applied for in person.

What advantage does that offer over simply using the driving licence as a form of ID?

The public service card also is your free travel pass and has a code for accompanying spouse or carer .

I don't know. I just don't have a problem with it and I can see the logic behind.
