Not sure if this might interest any of you, but there was a "pop up" channel called BBC Radio 1 Vintage to celebrate their 50th anniversary, found this John Peel show which looks decent if anyone fancies a listen....

At my first job there was a radio which never moved off Atlantic 252.

I can still remember the Alexei Sayle ad for van insurance almost verbatim :p

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

I'm glad I seen this post, I wasn't familiar with XTC when I read it and then checked them on Spotify..

I noticed the song making plans for Nigel, I heard that for the first time a few weeks ago and I remember thinking 'how have I never heard this before', so all today I've been on am XTC binge since.. some cracking songs and it's mental to think i never heard of this band before when they're exactly my style of music!

It's an absolute stonker. Was always a mainstay in my indie sets back in the day. (Forgive me for saying indie)

I remember picking up an original "Drums and Wires" in Melbourne for about $5. Somehow survived travelling around and the trip home.

Hello, lets have a look at whats coming up this weekend.
It's much of the same, to be honest. Nile Rodgers continues his dubious guide to Making it in the Music Business and BBC Four can't get enough of those TOTP complilations.
Sky Arts goes Punk on Saturday while Tony Visconti's unsigned thing comes to a climax.
Channel 4 gets in on the act on Monday, details below ...

    Thursday
3.30pm The Hollies: Look Through Any Window (Sky Arts)
Profile of the band, including an interview with members Graham Nash, Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott and archive TV performances by the group from 1963 to 1975

7pm-Midnight BBC 6 Music Live: The Highlights (BBC Red Button)

10.30pm Bob Dylan: The Folk Years (Sky Arts)
Drawing on rare footage of Bob Dylan in performance, this documentary explores the factors that shaped the musician's early career and deals with the thorny issue of acoustic versus electric. Featuring archive performances of Baby, Please Don't Go, Hard Times in New York Town, Lonesome Whistle Blues, Fixin' to Die, Man of Constant Sorrow, Blowin' in the Wind, A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall and The Times They Are a-Changin'

    Friday
3.30pm Marvin Gaye: Greatest Hits Live (Sky Arts)
The soul singer performs to a sell-out crowd at Amsterdam's Jaap Edenhal in 1976 during his first European tour for 10 years, featuring tracks Since I Had You, Let's Get It On, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You), Too Busy Thinking About My Baby and I Heard It Through the Grapevine. 9pm & 1.40am Nile Rodgers: How To Make It In The Music Business** (BBC Four)
Part 2/3 The Grammy-winning record producer, songwriter, composer and guitarist recalls working with Diana Ross, David Bowie, Madonna and Duran Duran. He reveals the moment he was finally persuaded to give up the drugs and drink, and references the new generation of stars with whom he has worked, including Laura Mvula, John Newman, Avicci and Keith Urban. Contributors include Carly Simon, Kathy Sledge and Paul Gambaccini
** As Welsh Megaman pointed out it contains very little useful information about how to make it in the Music Business, it does contain lots of Nile Rodgers telling Nile Rodgers stories you've heard before like the time he got turned away from Studio 54 on New Years Eve

9pm & 3.30am Rock and Roll: Truth (Sky Arts)
An exploration of the search for truth and authenticity in rock 'n' roll, featuring music and interviews with artists including Henry Rollins, Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler

10pm & 2.40am Sharon Osbourne presents Rock & Roll's Dodgiest Deals (BBC Four)
The music manager, modern impressario and promoter reflects on rock 'n' roll deals through the decades, from Little Richard's half a cent a record for Tutti Frutti to Robbie Williams' £80million advance. Sharon recounts the story of notorious bad deals for the Beatles, Animals and Small Faces and uncovers the secrets to great artist deals, including Led Zeppelin's live deal, the Police's DIY deal and Moby's millions earned from licensing tunes for advertisements. She also gets the inside story from those still chasing royalties and those who took on the music business and won

Including interviews with George Clinton, Ray Parker Jr and trombonist Fred Wesley

'90, Too Funky, A Different Corner, Amazing and Outside

And that's more or less it, GOLD starts re-runs of two vaguely music based BBC3 comedy series on Friday Night, Snuff Box at 1.25am and The Mighty Boosh at 3.20am

In the former, Matt Berry teaches you the guitar.

This will be entirely as useful as Nile Rodger's instructions for Making It In The Music Business

Step 5: Bump into David Bowie in a restaurant and agree to produce his next album.

Is there anything more boring than Nile Rodgers waffling on about how great he thinks he is?

    Ah, Nile's alright.

The Dave Clark Documentary (Produced and Narrated by Dave Clark) where he spends hours trying to persuade everyone that The Dave Clark Five were bigger than The Beatles - that's in a league of its own

Even this review of that nonsense, which starts off with
I’m a huge Dave Clark Five fan

    goes on to say
The show was one big puff piece for Dave. I found it repetitive (why the same songs over and over?), padded (the band’s home movies seemed to go on forever) and embarrassing. It didn’t help that Dave has not aged well, or that his enthusiasm during the stories he told was barely above comatose (this guy had acting lessons?).

    and
The show seemed like a pathetically desperate cry for attention and historical recognition.

How did Andy Peebles ever get a TOTP presenting gig?

He looks more like a dodgy video store owner.

Every time Mark King sings "Son and Daughters" I keep expecting him to sing "tears and sadness ..." like in the lyrics of the old Australian Daytime Soap that was on ITV when The Sullivans wasn't.

All the epic music Stevie Wonder has made, and his two UK Number Ones are this and Ebony and Ivory.

Never understood that 'Disco Sucks' mentality, and the blowing up of disco records.

I remember when it came out. It sounded absolutely epic - one of the earliest pop tracks to heavily use technology/synths with a big slick production. It had many imitators within months and helped define the sound of the 80s. Restraint wasn't popular in the 80s :p

Bizarrely, Newsnight on BBC2 regularly takes time out from discussing Trump, North Korea, Brexit, TMay and all that to do reports on eclectic music stories

Here's one on The Go-Betweens, an Australian Band that nearly made it but are still fondly remembered

And Sparks talking about their new collaboration with Franz Ferdinand

while Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics dropped in for a chat

Someone at Newsnight should be directing BBC Four's musical programming, which has become stale, formulaic and repetitive of late

Yeah that made me laugh. Thought it would've went deeper to be honest. An honest if fairly peripheral telling of his story.

It was an ok Documentary it covered a lot of the same ground as one I foun on YouTube called “A different story”, although you could hear the frailty in George’s voice on the interviews he did for this (off camera). Also didn’t see the point of interviewing Liam Gallagher who as far as I’m aware wasn’t a fan of George’s music before this documentary. Still I am looking forward to the Listen without prejudice/MTV unplugged out this week.
