I finally picked this up recently and started playing it... Any good guides at becoming better? I gotta be honest, I suck.
Skirmishes are generally ok but I could do with some tactic training. I never have any money. I absorbed a nation. Got a tiny army for it and three strongholds / towns and still ended up with even less money.

Should I be concetrating my army into just one early game? I had three generals on the field in my first play but I couldn't sustain them.

What's the best first steps for starting out?

Sorry if any of the terms are wrong... I'm quite new to this :)

    Cheers.

Someone asked the same question a while back.
    degrassinoel's and my response below.

Dwarfs are definitely the easiest race to get to grips with as they require the least micro management (that's an area I still struggle with.)

A few personal tips start with
    • On your First campaign go with Empire or Dwarves.
They seem to be the easiest to get to grips with
    • Fight the first couple of battles even if the auto resolve is massively in your favour.
It will help you get used to the controls.
    • Try to get a full stack (20 unit army) as fast as possible.
Don't worry too much about the quality of the units. You can replace any crappy ones later.
However try to keep some balance to the units(ranged, anti-infantry, anti-large, etc.)
    • Prioritise growth buildings at the start.
This will help you later on as you need higher tier settlements to build the buildings that give you access to the more elite units.
Higher tier settlements also have better garrisons so you don't have to worry as much about protecting them.
    • One army at a time.
Only create new stacks when you can afford to.
No point in having multiple stacks if it puts a strain on your finances.
    • Be Diplomatic.
You can get a good income from trade and confederation is the easiest way to expand.
    For your army.

Try to have a good mix of melee infantry, ranged, and mounted units.

Melee units with shields are your front line troops - anything else should attack the flanks.

Ranged units are crap at melee fighting - keep them close to the front line but not on it.

Mounted units always flank. Attack theirs, protect yours.

    For your cities.

Provinces are split up into 2/4 or 5 zones, once you've captured or occupied all of these you get a province bonus - you cant end turn without it having a popup and you get to choose which.

You dont have to build all the buildings.

If you're being attacked mercilessly - build a wall/s and upgrade them as much as you can.

You dont need to garrison an army (although it helps sometimes)- each city and town has it's own.. fairly crap ones to start with, but as you build your cities they become fairly large.

Building "growth" building like fields will increase how often you can upgrade your town or city, and increase the amount of replenishment for your armies.

Military buildings unlock specific military units - like archers or cavalry, or even artillery etc.

Your first province should have a money maker - like a gold mine or some other form of income. A military building like a barracks or whatever for general purpose bog standard infantry, and whatever else you see fit.
This all depends on which faction and what way you want to play.

Personally, the best way to play for me is to go defensive at the start - sort out what buildings you need or want. Have your army standing by close to your main city. Take a few turns to see what's going on, make a bit of cash, then head out once you're confident - dont be afraid to retreat and rebuild an army. Also, if your legendary lord dies.. you'll get him/her back in a few turns if you can manage to survive that long.

Just take your time with it, it's it's own reward.

Awesome, I should get a good run at it again on Sunday night. I think my biggest issue was expanding / confederating too early.
I'll give the one of the dwarf factions a run and take it slower.

Stick with the standard Dwarf faction for now.
Clan Angrund start with a +50% upkeep penalty which will really hinder you fielding larger armies and/or higher tier units.

Started with Vampire Counts to see what happens on my first go around.

Definitely started off too aggressive vs the minor vampire faction. Built up and destroyed them but the dwarfs are a completely different matter.

Battles vs them frequently demolish a massive portion of my armies and I tend to use two armies just to get enough bodies on the field. I also can't take over their bases and so have tended to raze them to avoid dwarf armies near my territory. Trying to use a hero to increase the corruption in those places so I can avoid attrition reaching their further away bases.

Might change as I can get more grave guard.

Grave guard with great weapons, Hex wraiths, Cairn Wraiths, Vargulf and Terrorgheists have armour piercing so good against the dwarfs.

Vargulf would be my favourite there.
Makes short work of any gates and sends stunties flying. :D

CA have just announced that you can start Preloading TWW 2 from 5:30 pm today.

Which is good news for me because I'll need at least 3 days to download it on my connection!!

Wonder why double the storage is needed for the second game. Maybe to include all the Warhammer 1 races?

Thanks. Have a few grace guard units. Might see about a few more with great weapons.

I find resupply a lot different to other total war games. I need a lord which makes hiring in a production center and sending to the front a lot more difficult (as it is hard to get the front built up enough to produce these units before the front has moved) but the units I get out to the front seem to last longer and resupply quickly simply by hanging around so I keep them for longer.

Also getting used to using all the magic and items. Takes time in big battles to flick around the different characters and pick targets. My attention has turned to the empire as a softer target (and one whose lands I can take over and stop the nasty attrition effects in dwarf lands, it is also an objective for me to wipe them out).

Loving it so far and plenty more to discover.

Most likely, they announced the combined map patch should be out soon after launch (I say before end of October) so need to have all the assets in...or be a 10-12Gb patch!

    That makes sense.
Started preloading on monday and download is about 40GBs. Unpacked it'll be more so adding a 10-20GB update for the mortal empires campaign would make up the 60GBs alright.

Without making me bankrupt, whats a decent Graphics card for this?

My GeForce GTX 670 (EVGA FTW Signature2) is not handling it very well thus far.
Using it with a CPU: Intel 3rd Gen Core i5-3570K CPU (4x 3.40GHz Turbo) processor and 8GB of RAM

what kind of FPS are you getting /looking for?
    What's your screen resolution?
what settings do you want to play at?
what's the upper limit of your budget?

Haven't played it but have GTX 970 which does excellently in games I'd imagine would be similar in what they demand and how they demand it like Civ VI and X-Com 2. You can usually find one on Adverts.ie for €170-200 or so, occasionally less (nearly nabbed one for €130 early in the summer).

    970 is 300 more than 670
Looks like ~€250 new, mine was €368 4.5 years ago :P

If you're going new get a 6gb 1060 or an 8gb rx580. 970 would be a good option 2nd hand if you're tight on cash.

If you can afford to spend close to 400 get a 1070.

I'd lean towards the 6gb too but the 3gb 1060 is a lot cheaper and will do almost the same job as the 6gb.

Where did you see a 1070 for 400?

There's been one on amazon a few times for £349 I think

Use a revolut card and pay in sterling you'll get current rates.

I've been using a revolut card for a while. Takes the guess work out of buying in sterling.

You can also stock up on sterling when the rate is good.

Normally I'd be the same and wait until the price went down but this is an exception.
I'm a sucker for Warhammer games and total war is one of my favourite franchises.

I'm loving WH TW 2. It runs so much better then the first one as well. Im getting 80+ fps on the highest settings at 1080p. In WH 1 I was getting just above 60 fps and the graphics have improved quite a bit!

Noticed that too, plus the little UI changes were nice - end turn in particular when you have an agent or lord unmoved/used or an event to deal with, that often got me when i'd loaded up an old save and just didnt look around :D

battles are bit slower - though maybe that's just the lizardmen and Mazdamundi's ever-so slow drawl-growling speech (which is totally fcuking awesome btw)

High Elves here. They're vanilla as **** but their diplo and peace time options are really good.

Looking forward to Skaven. Apparently they're tricksy bastards.
