Can anybody tell me what David Drakes purpose is on the team ? He comes on in a forwards position but never scores. He was stationary like a spectator for the rebound from Cillians free.

He's a big solid athletic unit; from a distance you could mistake him for a Dublin squad player.:p

What are the Mayo fans' thoughts on that absolute reckless-mindless call from number 3 to get himself sent off? It pretty much sealed their fate.

I'm going to assume I'm in the minority, but I find it almost unforgivable from such an experienced player. Absolutely no need for it, not in a million years. Stupid and reckless. 15 against 14 we'd be winning that game, no question.

You have to have some compassion for the Corkman.

Who will retire? I reckon Andy will give it another year. Clarkey not sure.....he could play till he is forty in that position. Seamie may be mulling over it.

Hard to see Dillon committing and perhaps should have gotten a run on Sunday.

I'd say Andy will stay on. Didn't Clarkie say last year he'd just give it another year? Alan I'd say waill hang up the boots, maybe Seamie too. Hope to God Roachy stays on, he'd a rough few months with his young one being ill. We'll be back in the All Ireland next year, and we'll be the first ones to win it in August :D

Soz. We did 114 years ago on 2nd August 1901. Not Soz.

    :)

    :)

wikipedia has that as 2nd August 1903. Now I knew there were a few All-Irelands that went on like that, but I thought that was due to the war and the Rising etc.

Jeebus yeah. 1901 championship finished in 1903.

    1904
    1 July 1906 Kerry 0–5 Dublin 0–2 Cork

    1905
    16 June 1906 Kildare 1–7 Kerry 0–5 Thurles

1904 Championship finishing two weeks after the 1905 championship is quite something.

2018 football final is pencilled in for first Sunday in September, Pope's visit or something preventing it from being in August.

Would he be any good to kick a few Points for Mayo ?

Ah yeah, that'll be a bit of a kicker alright, I wouldn't like that either.

I was annoyed all year long when people said that Dublin hadn't been tested, when in fact they hadn't allowed themselves to be put in position that you could call "being tested". Same thing here, Dublin weren't allowed play, Keegan is a monster player.

This is so true. He is in my eyes one of the best players to ever wear the jersey, maybe even the best. People may not like him as he will do whatever is required but I just think that is absolutely brilliant.

Everyone raves about the big players but putting Keegan on them makes them look ordinary. That says everything about him!!!

Any reason for Mayo to keep on subbing Colm Boyle ?? Thought it was a very poor decision on Sunday. He was having a fine game and didnt seem to be tiring at all. Off on 55 mins, dont think i heard Coen's name mentioned in the 20 minutes after that.

    That's an understatement :D
He signed my boys jersey after a match earlier in the year. He's very well constructed!

Except when he passed straight to a Dublin player on the last Mayo attack of the game. Just like he did repeatedly in the Kerry game when he came on.

According to second captains, he was exhausted and struggled to walk up steps after he came off

Was he the lad that took too much out of it and went into a crowd of dubs?? ha ha, was probably too caught up in the action to hear any names being mentioned i guess :P!! None of mayo subs did sh@g all in fairness. Boyle didnt seem too pleased coming off either, i just didnt understand him being subbed.

Not one player started the final off the minor team in 13 or last year's winning under 21 team

Ok diarmuid will surely go on to be a key player for years but besides that it's worrying. Loftus is certainly talented but so far Coen just looks a slight bit off cutting it at the top level. Will anyone else realistically make it anytime soon?

While we've a superb starting 15 any sort of an injury crisis and we'd be well and truly sucked into the pack really...

Even Diarmuid been the best of the new lot hasn't had a good game since against Kildare in 2016.

Loftus looks the best hope, but he is only one where there needs to be several.

Coen looks out of his depth.

I'm hoping there is a few hidden gems in the county or discarded players of the past who need a 2nd chance.

Would liked to have seen Varley get another trial this year or last(especially with our lack of quality forwards), playing well apparently for Vincents.

Let's be honest Loftus is far from a guaranteed future regular either.

There doesn't seem to be any potential greats coming through. It wouldn't amaze me if the 2020 championship team was very similar to Sunday

Well, we'll see then with a bit of hindsight

I don't know what constitutes "very similar" but the Mayo team in 2020 will almost certainly not include most of these starters from Sunday:
Clarke, Vaughan, Barrett, Higgins, Boyle, Seamie, Tom & Andy.
That's over half the team. If 2 of them were still playing Championship in 3 years I would be very surprised given their age.

What age is Barrett? Thought he'd a good few years left

But sure most of them will still only be early 30s. Far from too old in this day and age. With s & c nowadays, players will go on far longer with better game management

I don't see who coming through now will usurp these even past their primes.

The top tennis player in the world is 36, Toulon won a European cup a few years back littered with 30 somethings. Paul O'Connell had arguably his best season at 37 years of age

No he is 29 or so I think

Seen this on youtube just now. The standard of refereeing in the game leaves a lot to be desired. McQuillan in particular is an example of an absolutely shocking referee who still gets chosen by the GAA to ref the important ones. With the amount of money that we fans spend following our counties it's simply not good enough that so many games can come down to the ref. The GAA need to step up to the plate.

He was on the 2006 U-21 team with Higgins & Co

Smashing goal. Mayo would've been proud of it.
