Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Are Halford's worth trusting? Are they bike specialists ?Looking to get a racer on budget myself , and saw a decent 18 Gear bike for around €600 (or less)

    Done deal and Adverts are littered with 2nd bikes from Halfords such as Carrera. You would pick up one for about a third of the price. But ask yourself why do many of these end up there ?

    Because the buyers want to try out cycling on a tight budget and then decide they don't like it?

    Would any of these cheaper models, but worth while, (especially the 18 gears) Previously mounting bike, first time to get a road bike, intended for fitness , long distance on country roads?

    Any of the bikes linked earlier in the thread would be a better bet than those(even though boardman do fine bikes and there is nothing wrong with them)
    If the focus on donedeal was your size it's probably the pick of the bunch.

    I am a complete newbie , could you explain that in a bit more detail.

    You mean the quality of the components used to build the bike? , the quality of the brakes/gears/ number of gears? Quality of of the build? Comfort in the ride? Ability to absorb shock and vibration etc

    I do notice alright a lot of bikes from Halfords on sale on the done deal....... hmmm, cheaply too , as if the owner is desperate to get rid even if it was only 2 rides.

    Yes primarily better group sets and lighter wheels.
    Below is the ranking of shimano groupsets, Claris being entry level.

    Claris, Sora, Tiagra,105,Ultegra

    There's nothing wrong with the lower level group sets but you may aswell get a higher up one for the same price and the first 2 possibly 3 aren't 11 speed yet.

    Heavier wheels are something you'll want to upgrade down the road but you'll really not get particularly good/light and strong wheels at your price point.

    So in the end I went for the Planet X in the medium and it's fits me perfectly. Arrived 2 weeks ago and have put about 200KM on it so far. Lovely bike, handles well and looks well too. Have to say I'm very happy and with the price you couldn't go wrong. Thanks to all for their help and suggestions and discount codes especially!

    Mine still sits in its box in work while I "endure " 35-40 C, 95% humidity and a continual diet of Indian food. Another 2 weeks for it to be alone ;)
