Destiny 2 Story Discussion and Raid Speculation (SPOILERS Inside)

So, who wants to discuss the Destiny 2 story? This little preamble is only so hovering on the thread link won't show any spoilers....

Why are the guardians so damned helpless?

Yes we lost our light - but I found the discussions around that laughable. Cabal killing poor defenseless guardians? Really? They could still use guns. Is a guardian without light really any different to a Fallen, or Cabal? We've had no issue killing them without them having any light! Then Ikora bangs on about Gual becoming immortal if we don't stop him - END OF THE WORLD STUFF, EVIL EVIL EVIL! or exactly like us.

Also, it really wasn't difficult for us to get our light back.... Zavala... have you even tried?

I thought the story fell down a bit in the end - the 'resolution' between ghaul and his mentor guy was way too quick.

I thought we might have beaten Ghaul during the mission and than the battle to destroy The Almighty would have been the raid.

The last few missions starting with the assault on the ship in the EDZ were great fun and very reminiscent of Halo at its best. Most of the campaign was pretty dull up to that point though and not much of a step up from the first game.

The cutscenes were enjoyable but felt a bit tacked on in places, particularly the bits with Ghaul and as a result he felt a bit surplus to requirements and turned out to be a pretty crap villain. The assault on the almighty was a much better finale for the campaign than the mission after it imo.

She was a real Debbie downer going on about having no light all the time, like we might as well just all kill ourselves. I would have left her on Io and kept going.
Also, it really wasn't difficult for us to get our light back.... Zavala... have you even tried?

Bit lousy that the Traveller was gifting me 3 subclasses when the Vanguard leaders didn't get one.

I felt the middle fell down. Started strong and started weaving in the tale of Ghaul and his right hand. Middle of the game was play engineer. I'm the only guardian with light and you have me running around plugging in switches and turning things on?? The last 2/3 missions were thrilling I felt, but agreed that it all finished up with the 2 guys a but quick.

I thought there was goign to be a split there and we'd end up having to fight both - Ghaul firstly, and then that other guy would be left leading the Cabal after Ghaul, and he would lead them on a more militaristic fight against rather than ideological. I felt that was a missed opportunity.

I thought the story was pretty good tbh. Unlike the first it had a beginning, a middle and an end. It's pretty functional stuff but found it entertaining enough. Would have liked to play it once and gone back a few months later (like I did with the Division/BL2) and go again but you need those three guardians.
Some of the music in it, like the first one, was amazing imo.

Had a fright with the Hunter. Got to almost lvl20 before the last mission, quit out, ranked up and got gear from the vault, then couldn't find the mission again. Thought I was going to have to restart. It's not on a planet but clearly on the mission screen right in the middle but I couldn't see it?

On the whole regaining our light thing: I would have a thought some sort of escort mission with the 3 Vanguard would have happened. Get them their light back from the Shard, so as they would be available to help take down Gary in the final mission. But alas, that was not to be. The final battle fell short of what had been building up. The Speakers 'apparent' death felt like a little side note.

The Almighty was a stunning piece of scenery and skybox art.
The music, again, top notch stuff.

Raid is going to be against the Cabal Emperor himself, Calus. Looking forward to it.

And the final scene? Those pyramid ships? Goa'uld on the way? Jaffa Kree! :)
I think they are actually 'The Darkness'. Setting up future DLC TTK style? Or playing the long game for D3?

I thought the story was good as well. It was structured and for the most part made sense. It followed a decent line of progression and the length of the missions were more suited to the given task at hand. Granted though I thought they rushed through the last third a bit too quickly.

Although, it did seem to be strange how the vanguard were not able to join us to go get their light back I am hoping there is more to this than they just glanced over it. I think Ikora makes reference to that on a couple of occasions wondering why we alone were selected by the traveller to get our light back. Maybe this could lead to something.......probably not but here's hoping anyway.

My only real gripe with it was that Ghaul was so easy to defeat even when running solo. With all the "powers" he now had from the light on top of supposedly being the biggest badass around he went down fairly handy.

    Indeed!

Story felt rushed at the end, the final boss was a bit of a letdown. Really liked the mission on The Almighty (still think that is a rubbish name for it).

I chuckled when I saw the ship. I figure there's a god like monster on each ship, evenly spaced out, a couple of million light years behind each other, all travelling the same route to earth, for D3, D4 etc...

Hmmm my raid boss theory based on Io exploration is Savathun.

I felt the pyramid ships were pointing to the raid to be honest - do you think that is for a future expansion (Maybe the year 2 expansion) rather than the raid on Wednesday? What makes you think Calus is the raid - I saw nothing in the game (but not completed all post game missions) that indicate a further cabal threat is imminent - seems the Red Legion were against Calus too.

I've seen a couple of spots on patrol that could be raid start points. Near the Cistern on Nessus looks like there could be something.

Hmmm my raid boss theory based on Io exploration is Savathun.

Savathun 'Witch Queen' is a Hive Wizard, Sister to Oryx. So, unless she's invading The Leviathan, we'll be fighting Callus or someone very close to him.

The references to Savathun are more likely setting up a future Hive Raid. There is a leadership void now among the Hive and Fallen, now that Oryx is dead. There could be a power struggle now between the other 2 sisters, the aforementioned Savathun, and Xivu Arath. We could, quite possibly, be facing one or both some where down the line in a future DLC Raid. All this, of course, leads on to the Worms themselves.

The Raid is known to be called The Leviathan, which is the big World Eating Space Whale ship, which is where Callus was exiled to after his inner circle, including Gary, overthrew him. The book that came with the CE, is written from Callus' perspective and mentions how he was exiled to this ship.

There's also a mission on Nessus where some of the dialogue references The Emperor and his offerings of Opulence. Again, referenced in the book. You also see this ship in the opening sequence.

The Black Goa'uld ships at the end are a teaser, IMO anyway. Tomorrow will tell whether I'm right or wrong.

I think it's this video that best describes what we can expect from the raid...

(Note that I watched a video last night but can't check it here in work to confirm it's the correct video)

    Found it online @ Destinypedia
YOU'RE LIKE ME, AREN'T YOU? YOU WON'T SETTLE FOR WHAT YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN. YOU WANT MORE.

Do you desire eternal greatness? Do you seek true freedom? I, alone, hold the power to grant you these gifts... if you prove yourself to me.

Know that I am Calus, the last and greatest emperor of the Cabal. For centuries, I led the revels of my empire, and the stars themselves burnt sweet and clear. But in time the jealous and the tight-fisted rose up and sent me into exile. And when the people called out for me, these envious rebels battered my Cabal down into grey submission.

Now I offer my gifts and delectations to you, young celebrant! Together we might restore laughter and great excess to the golden halls of Torobatl and all the stars beyond!

But before we feast together, I must know your quality. Can you bear the weight of my favor? Are you capable of executing my vengeance?

I seek equals, and they are few. I've seen more than a thousand years of war and trouble. I fought the Sindû escadrilles, put down the Clipse revolt, and interpreted the mad prophecies of the OXA Machine. But might is not enough - for through all of this struggle, I kept the bonfires lit and the sweet wine flowing. To be emperor, you see, is to be the model of perpetual joy! A good ruler must live the life that everyone craves. For if an emperor cannot be happy, then what hope has anyone?

In you I also seek the capacity for wonder and the appetite for greatness. When I took the throne, my people bled to feed a corrupt military elite. I chased those Praetorate scum from their dens of iniquity. I offered their stolen riches back to my Cabal! And I vowed to celebrate our existence in the highest luxury, to set an example for my empire - no privileged few, but decadence for all!

    Friend, I was betrayed.

I could have forgiven the traitors, for I am an emperor of limitless cheer. I swear on my own silk and treasure that although my betrayers were as close to me as my own daughter, still I would have forgiven them - had they not also betrayed my people.

It was not enough for this vile council to overthrow me. These mendacious and murderous villains, these dear companions who I kept so long at my side: they gave my Cabal to brutal military rule. Now armored tyrants stain golden Torobatl with their dark designs. Ghaul is the epitome of their creed. An innocent orphan simmered in their poison hate. He will infect the whole Cabal with his emptiness - I have foreseen it! His life will be a quest to fill the hollow in his soul!

They would have killed me, but I was too beloved and too glorious. So they sent me away into resplendent exile upon this Grand Leviathan.

And from that exile I call on you, the brave, to execute my justice upon the traitors. Save the Cabal from grey enslavement. Join me in my search for the glorious and absolute powers of the universe!

Bring me the end of my enemies, and prove yourself worthy of the prize Ghaul will never claim. True power. True purpose. These things I offer you, and weapons, and knowledge, and glory. I have pulverized moons into beautiful rings of ruin! I have snuffed out stars to improve the harmony of the constellations! Think of the monuments I can make for you.

I promise you everything. All I ask is death.

These are the names of the traitors:

Yeah it's still there, but you need to open up the EDZ map. It's in the top right corner of the map.

just a few thoughts on the campaign / game up to that point

    1. Campaign - overall, pretty good - standard shooter fare, but similar in structure and scope to a Halo game
    2. great to not have to return to the cryptarch to decrypt every blue or green engram you came across
    3. Vehicle levels! a nice surprise, plus the fact that they handle so well is a big plus. The drake is miles more agile than Halos scorpion tank
    4. Cut scenes - these added a lot to the game, although it could have done with maybe one or 2 more, particularly towards the back half, there was a period where it felt like there was mission after mission with very little exposition in between.
    5. I miss the factions :( FWC rule!
    6. once you got off earth, unless you genuinely forced yourself to look around, there's very little compelling you to spend much time in any of the other planets. No doubt I'll exhaust everything they have to offer, but over the course of the campaign, its very much as splash and dash in each location.
    7. patrols and lost sectors seem like an afterthought. I'll do a few more and see how I feel about it.

I'm looking forward to the next phase of the game to see how it goes, I've only done 2 strikes so far and barely dipped my toes into pvp. Its obviously early days yet but my impressions are positive overall.

edit - one last thing, the entire game seems like it has the 'juggler' modifier from destiny 1 applied. on several occasions I noticed that I was running low on kinetic ammo, only to switch to an energy weapon, and voila - kinetic ammo starts magically dropping.

Big time, it must have been a design decision to try stop people from relying on one gun to do everything.

They are back the weekend after next I think - looks like it will be a monthly thing (or just their reintroduction).

This Week At Bungie pointed at a Faction Rally event.

Was just there and there were only level 20s. Are you sure it's the same Farm after you complete the game? Also noticed some characters can move and jump at a crazy rate. One was translucent. (I haven't been drinking)

There's jump buffs hidden around the farm and a jumping puzzle to go with them. I haven't gone looking for it yet.

I enjoyed the campaign, I couldn't fly through it like I wanted to as life got in the way...

There is definitely a little lull in the middle alright but it was night and day compared to what Destiny 1 shipped with....

I loved going back to where it all began at the end also, nice touch...

I really thought Ghaul would be harder to kill. I minced him on my own without any sort of panicky moments.

The Almighty mission was superb, especially the bit outside, loved that.

Finished all the lost sectors and adventures on Earth and Titan earlier. Still have a good few region chests to find on Earth, pretty much all the ones around the middle section I think.

Forgot to add, the city section at the end was class as well, I was running it with about 5 or 6 other people, felt like a proper assault rather than me one manning it.
