I can safely say anytime I have ate their it has been the worst food I've eaten out. Can't for the life of me understand why its popular.

I've been 6/7 times and apart from their wings i cant ever remember getting anything that was better than OK!
The fajitas were nice till you saw the grease, very off putting. It reminded me of a fry up from Tony's!
Honestly, if it wasn't for their wings I'd never go back again. If there's better in the city if yet to find them. That's one thing on a pretty large menu tho.

I quite like their pizzas, and it's the only thing I'd ever order in there. But we only go in a couple of times a year, usually very early evening or if we want to grab some food in a hurry. It's not worth it for the creche-like atmosphere in there, or the shrieking parties of women.

I have to say that any time I was in Luigi Malones before it was only ok, but I was there recently and I really enjoyed it - I had the chicken schnitzel burger and my mum had a steak and they were both delicious; the staff were very friendly too. I wouldn't mind going back again and having that burger - it was really tasty :)

Luigi's is in there with the Milano's, Eco's gang. Big portions, generic menu (menu covering 10 countries cuisine is on their website as a reason to go there. Not my thing, I prefer you to get one thing right than do ten, but sure... ). In my opinion, kinda overpriced for what it is. Kids menu pizza tomato and cheese is 8.99. I ask ya. But it's inoffensive enough. And the crowds love it, so there you go.

I found a teeny tiny chocolate shop, patisserie and café on St main street called Danero. I think they go to the douglas market as well? I must have walked past this place 100 times and never spotted it, until my friend pulled me in as she was buying a pressie for someone.

Sure we had to try something as we were there. :D

Really delicious truffles, macarons, nice chocolate gift boxes. Beautiful elegant cakes, paris brest, chocolate mousse cake, opera cake. And a nice selection of icecreams. It's long and narrow with a small few seats. Nice spot anyway.

Must try Daneros alright (across from Brick Lane yeah?) passed it recently and it looked very nice but was fit to eat a horse so there was not time for chocolate

ah jaysus just when we see end of the pork pulling fad they've started pulling the beef now

On foot of advice on this site I ate there Fri night, the croquettes and fritters are wow.. Myself and my brother both had the roast sirloin, really really good,
A big steak of perfectly pink beef, seriously good tender beef, could have cut it with a spoon..

I know Luigi's gets hammered here and for good reason but we were going for dinner last week and I had a craving for wings so went in.
The place was dead, maybe just less than half full on a Wednesday night. No atmosphere in there.
Got my wings as the main with chips and they were as good as ever. My wife had the chicken fajitas which were pretty tasty but once the bowl started to empty you could see the amount of grease at the bottom, pretty off putting tbh.
Got their toblerone cheesecake each which wasn't as good as I remember it to be.
10/10 for the wings, still think their the best in the city.
    5/10 for everything else.

They used to do a shortbread dessert that I remember being quite good but it's long gone st this stage.

Anyone know where in Cork serves a good Croque-Madame?
I had one in Paradise Crepe a while back, of course they're gone now, can't think of anywhere that would have it.

I went to Cafe Velo yesterday as when you said it I recalled a friend once told me the breakfast in the was unreal also. And it was nearer than Tara's Tearooms.

What a mistake, I went in and took a seat and the place was absolutely rammed a it's popular for some reason,
Anyway the waitress came down once I hit the seat and asked if I knew what I wanted, I quickly skimmed the menu and no eggs Benedict so I panicked and ordered the full Velo.

Only when she left I read what it consisted of and I wasn't impressed but they're one of the places who name the makers of the sausages and pudding as if quality is going to make up for quantity which in some cases it does but not in this instance.

Two sausages, two bacon without the tails, a half moon of some fancy pudding, one egg, half a tomato, hash brown, toast and tea or coffee.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and I treat myself once a week to a full Irish which when it lives up to the name it keeps me going until that evening, well sorry to say but after this I was eating again at 2.

From memory I think there was also a mini Velo and I shudder to think what that consisted of.

Anyway it came out and I was hoping the presentation and flavours would make up for the lack of food but it didn't, it was truly Meh.
The plate was also too big for the amount of food which made it look even more miserable and the worst part of all was the price, €9.90!!!

I could only find three examples in my gallery but I'll share them with you because words can't justify how much of a rip off this breakfast was.

The Celtic Tiger is definitely alive and well in Cafe Velo.
    I won't be going back.

Yeah I've been there twice for brekkie now and I'm not a fan either

@flangemeistro did you say anything to the staff about how you felt? OK, you are free to moan here of course but perhaps if you said something they might have been able to make amends.

BTW I agree with you, it looks very stingy for €9.90

You mean did I ask for more food than was clearly written down on the menu?
I don't think that would have went down too well.

It would be different if the food was awful then obviously you complain but the food was ok.

Look as I said I was rushed and just panicked when I didn't see eggs Benedict so I went for the default breakfast option.

You live and you learn, what I've also noticed creeping in to a few restaurants now is not including tea/coffee with their breakfasts,
So there's advertise say €7.50 for a full Irish and they ask you as always tea or coffee? Brown or white toast and you answer.
It's only when you go up to pay and you get charged extra for the tea or coffee you realise, so that €7.50 turns into €9 or €9.50, I'm sorry now but if tea and coffee isn't included with a full Irish then it ain't a full Irish.

Just a few places I've noticed so far is the Cobh Golf Club, Ballyseedy & Funktion room in Cobh.

I haven't eaten breakfast in Cafe Velo but I have read the menu and the mini velo seems to have no sausage?! Am I reading that right??!! That's ridiculous, if it's true. You have to have sausage with a fry up.

Tbh flangemeistro, I think there is plenty on that plate, but I know in comparison to maybe your traditional fry up which is usually a big portion, this might look a bit stingy. I'd personally probably have enough in it, but it could be a bit cheaper alright.

If the mini velo is 8e then you are definitely better off going with the full velo.

oh sorry you didn't enjoy - i only suggested it on the back of my mate raving about it at the weekend.. and you wanted to try somewhere different.. (the parlour is my go to for brunch - eggs royale.. hmmm)

but in fairness, it does look like a full irish.. and would be enough for most - and price included tea/toast..

chips and beans are not in a trad. irish b'fast.. (as in the Amicus pic and beans in tony's)

I think it's the most appetising looking of the three photos you have there, an extra hash brown would be good maybe, but the coffee is fresh ground and the egg looks like its been poached so maybe that has pushed the cost up a bit?

Ah here...that is a pathetic full Irish. Tis a mini at best.
Maybe they could have put the toast on the plate with the rest to make it look like more. Impressions/presentation means a lot.
I got a burger in Horse and Jockey over the weekend. It was a large plate with an average burger with a little bowl with about 10 chips in it with some relish smeared over another part of the plate. Wide open spaces with three little things on it. At 17 euro I felt ripped off....a side salad would have solved the issue. My own fault for stopping there although the three meals the others had were fine...all enjoyed.

awe come one, put the toast on the plate? and then what, serve a plate for the toast for buttering? use your imagination

I think the velo one looks the best too!

Non greasy, tomato could do with a bit more cooking. Was the egg soft in the middle? Makes all the difference.

I dunno, two rashers, two sausage, one egg, one piece of tomato and one piece of pudding. And a hash. Looks like loads to me. Just a big plate, but, I love plates! Lots of room there to butter your toast and get it under that egg. You could almost build your own eggs benny there.

The amicus one just has chips instead of hash and beans instead of the tomato. So, all thats extra is the mushroom.

Cobh one has random marmalde on the plate (wtf?) and again shrroms, but the quantity of everything else is the same.

Is Jacob's on the Mall very good? Want to take someone out for dinner Monday, had planned on Orzo but it's only open til 6.

Jacob's menu does look nice but holy God, 23 quid for a bean burger.

Or anyone know anywhere else nice for a quiet romantic meal?

I wouldn't go to jacobs for romance. Very open air inside there, i think it's good for corporate social things. Money no object when someone else has the tab. ;)

Monday is a funny night though, A lot of places will be closed. I have no clue what will be open!

Club brasserie is my romantic place of choice. Nice and dark in there. Or l'attitude 51 for wine and nibbles.

Nosta has a decent selection for a Veggie if that's why you were looking at the bean burger, Monday night is a hard one to call in town though!

I think Jacobs is nice for the early bird - used to be 25 for 3 courses, been a while though so not sure how things are there now.
