It actually hit Viserion in the neck ,perhaps it hit his jugular vein considering the quick death.
Poor Viserion. They'll be hauling a scorpion up from Kings Landing armed with dragonglass tipped arrows just for him.

    Viserion: "Oh no, not again"...

Is there a Gray's Anatomy for dragons handy anywhere?

Re-watching it, you can see fire erupt from the impact of the spear, while Viserion is breathing fire. The ice spear pierced a hole through the chest and allowed the dragon fire to escape, burning through vulnerable areas, killing Viserion.

I think that's the key to take out a dragon and why the NK didn't throw the spear at Drogon as he was not breathing fire at that moment.

When fully re-animated, I'd imagine we'll see a large hole where the fire erupted through Viserion's chest.

that was a really horrible way for one of the dragons to go though I'm actually really sad :(
there like pet dogs but big and bumpy lol

    poor dany

people say game of thrones hasn't really killed anyone major lately but I think that's a major death in my eyes so sad please don't kill any more lol

I know, I was just having a laugh at the use of "jugular vein".

That spear throw was brutal like Achilles' throw in the film Troy.

Its all getting very silly now .
    Really poor writing .
Gendry runs back to the wall ,a raven flies to Dragonstone ,Daenarys gets her 3 Dragons and flies back past the wall ,all this in less than a day .

Why are people just out to criticise the writing all the time?

This show this season is not showing all details and giving indications of time but viewers have to realise that time has passed.

For example, the stand off with the boys on the rock surrounded by water and the white walkers was a long time as was indicated by the guys sleeping.

I assume they were there for more than a day so plenty of time for all the things to happen.

Either way the episode was epic and thoroughly enjoyable and there's no need for people to go and pick plot holes all the time that aren't really there.

I wonder would that damage stop Viserion breathing fire when re-animated? Some how I doubt it. Of course the NK re-animations seem to be much more complete. The poor old wights seem to be stuck in whatever state their bodies were.

The jugular veins aren't actually that critical. Doctors stick big needles into them all the time for central line placement.

I actually thought he'd be able to breathe ice. Too much Skyrim for me maybe.

Whatever he breathes will probably melt the wall and break the magic allowing them to march into the North finally.

I think they need the main players going into at least episode 7 and maybe the next season and then they'll start killing people off.

The night king was the main threat all along and now hes got a dragon as well as a massive army, kind of unfair. No matter how tall the wall is, they can just fly over it now. :o

I was laughing at the chains they used to get Viserion out, if they were dragging them around with them all season, no wonder they never made it to the wall.

Yeah made me laugh, although it does beg the question of if the wights could operate under the water to put the chains around the dragon's neck then why couldn't they just swim around the wall in the first place? (maybe it's only the white walkers themselves that can't deal with the water?)

Anyway I really enjoyed the episode, really thought Tormund was a gonner there for a minute.

So you're telling me a maester can patch him up?

    Oh thank God.

This is why we'll miss Benjen. And people just dismissing his loss like it was a random Lannister soldier. :(

Who were the other guys getting killed by the wights? Any far out shots looked like it was just the 7 of them.

Have to say I feel sorry for fans of this who wouldn't know how to stream the episode or download a torrent, there's no chance they'll make it to next Monday without getting it spoiled.

I loaded it up for myself and my father to watch, he can just about use facebook lord knows what he'd end up downloading if he tried blindly to find a stream or torrent. He didn't even want to watch it, he took some convincing. He was happy when he went on facebook a few mins ago and seen the blue eyed image.

Why do people over think these things? Does it matter? It's not a science documentary. It's not real life; it's fiction. It's just entertainment. Go with the flow.

In the immortal words of a certain gladiator: "Are you not entertained?!"

Edit: only after I'd posted I realised I should have added: you're looking for realism in a scene involving an army of the dead and dragons?!

I don't disagree, but two words for you, magic realism.

Because the writing the last few seasons has been very poor and lazy compared to previous seasons
I assume they were there for more than a day so plenty of time for all the things to happen.

Plenty of time ,really ,for a man to run back to the Wall ,then for a raven to fly 1000 miles to Dragonstone ,and then for Daenarys to mobilise her dragons and fly another 1000 miles back ?
    You think that's plausible ?
Either way the episode was epic and thoroughly enjoyable and there's no need for people to go and pick plot holes all the time that aren't really there.
Its a massive plot hole ,as was the whole ludicrous premise for going north in the first place ,to bring back a white walker .

It was exciting alright but its getting a bit farcical ,I was half expecting the fonz to surf down the back of a dragon

puts the walking dead to shame once again maybe amc should be kind enough to let more budget flow into that show instead of hording it all from even the production crew lol

This season should have had 10 episodes like normal. No reason they couldn't stretch things out.

Can you not understand that while you are okay with it, other people might not be? And, might, just might, want to discuss it on a discussion board?

Budget plain and simple between extra money for the higher up cast and all the cgi needed for this season

I think re-animated Viserion will breathe ice. How that brings down the wall, I'm not sure.

Anyhow, when the Hound tried to stop the captured Wight from screaming, by covering its mouth, his glove was frozen from the breath of the Wight.

I wonder can the Wights and the ice Viserion operate outside the frozen environment - maybe for a short while? I take it that the Night King/White walkers can as we've seen them walk through fire.

Thats a big factor allright .
However the show takes in more than 1 billion dollars a year ,at an average cost of ~$10m an episdoe.
An extra $30m isnt going to make much difference, especially when some tv channels show ads.More ads ,more revenue.

Apparently its subscription money that makes up the bulk of HBO's income. Ads are there too, but subs are the biggy with them.

No wonder GRRM doesn't give a shıt about the books anymore :pac:

No, I think it's because of D&D and the inept writers. They don't have any more book material to ground themselves, just a vague storyline from GRRM.

It's the biggest TV show in history, more episodes will pay for themselves. Don't even need more CGI scenes, just dialogue and build up.

That was a great episode. The pacing felt much, much better as did the dialogue. Felt everything developed in a much better manner. Perhaps a little predictable, but I've no complaints really.

A fairly polished episode, which was great to have as the previous episode was a little jarring in terms of how rushed it felt.
