sacred to Hindus. Not all indian restaurants are run by hindus. Plenty of indian restaurants do beef dishes.

Thanks! Though it's of little consequence to me since I happen to think all animals are sacred :P

That the HB as in HB pencils actually stands for something (hard black). I just thought it was the name of a brand or something like biro

It also refers to how heavy the lead is, I'm not overly familiar but 3H is a very light pencil, for sketching, the lines are easily erasable, 2H is a little darker, HB is the standard and then 2B and 3B are heavier respectively!

The henchmen in the Indiana Jones series is played by the same actor, Pat Roach. He actually has 4 parts in the 3 older movies:

    BTW

U-Boat is short for Unterseeboot or in English "under-sea boat".

Also the German Mini Series / Movie Das Boot is about a German Submarine. One day when they turned up to do some filming it had vanished !
Turns out it was being used for Raiders of the Lost Ark

The hole in a saucepan handle

I thought it's obvious use was to hang it up on a rack. But apparently you can put a spoon in there to so it drips into the pot and not all

over the kitchen counter. Use the hole to prop up the spoon over the saucepan.

I wish they had one in a frying pan for the turner thingy. Mine keeps dripping oil all over the place and sliding out of the pan.

Hmm. It's a nice idea, but I'm pretty sure me trying that would asking for trouble. Not sure how, but there would definitely be lots of cleaning, probably some scalding and ultimately a take away delivery involved.

Slightly off topic, but there is a really good story called "I pencil"

It was written about 50 or 60 years ago from the point of view of a pencil! freakonomics done an episode on it. It basically highlights the surprising level of complexity in things we consider mundane.

You think you could make a pencil from scratch? Read it and see do you still think that way. (Or do what I did and listen to the podcast!)

Sorry Brendan. Grammar was never my strong point, I've included 2 probable and 1 hillbilly suggestion - which would you recommend?

    Freakonomics did an episode?

    Freakonomics have done an episode?

Freakonomics done gone and did an episode?

Took me till my old age to realize that there are two little cardboard thingys on the sides of cling film and tin foil boxes .You push them in with your thumbs and the roll ( allegedly ) stays in place as you pull the film off .
I will just add that despite my excitement to learn this the Aldi ones dont work .

The reason you let food cool down before you put it in the fridge isn't because that food will go off - it was to stop it raising the temperature of your fridge and affecting all the rest of your food.

(And it's probably unnecessary nowadays too)

The suffix "-ate" means that oxygen is included, eg, sulfate = sulfur + oxygen; phosphate = phosphorus + oxygen.

When we talk about the need to hydrate, we're talking about drinking, or adding moisture or water to something. Hydrate = hydrogen + oxygen, ie, H2O, or water.

Also carbohydrate = carbon + hydrogen + oxygen.

    Mind blown!!!

that the first line of our national anthem: "Sinne Fianna Fáil" contains the name of one of the main political parties in Ireland.
Was singing it for years and then went, oh thats the same as the political party.

The name is the same, but it's not a reference to the political party.

The anthem (both the English original lyrics and the Irish translation) predates the political party. Fianna Fáil was one of the Irish names of the Irish Volunteers (the more commonly used one nowadays is Óglaigh na hÉireann). De Valera & co wanted to emphasise their links to the freedom fighters so they named the party after them.

I only just realised that Iodine Tablets are not Cyanide Tablets - always thought was odd that the Government had given out Iodine Tablets to use in case of Nuclear Fallout but figured it was so we'd die fast rather than slowly and painfully..
Felt pretty stupid when the penny dropped
