It's already easily accessible. It would be less easily accessible if it was sold in heavily regulated dispensaries to over 18s, rather than by shady guys on street corners to anyone with some cash.

And in other news, a survey has found that fat people tend to eat more than thin people.

They're in it for the money, not out of the goodness of their hearts.

Strong links to mental illness because your inhaling the fumes from oil, petrol and diesel, which were absorbed into to resin when it was snuck into the country in tanks. Not to mention the other impurities gangs put into drugs to increase their profits. They're going to buy it anyway, might as well give them non-contaminated cannabis and perhaps raise the age to 21 or 23.

Cus prohibition worked so well last time it was tried on something and the war on drugs could only be described as a resounding success..... /sarcasm

So the stoners fail college, no loss. They can always pick up the jobs the rest in society dont want.

A fella I went to college with smoked all day every day. He was first in his class and has a very VERY successful career now.

So scientists have proved what we all knew already, smoking cannabis will affect your intelligence and education.

How will the legalise cannabis brigade defend this?

My 2 cents, cannabis is not some miracle cure all drug the pro-side hippies try to say it is. It's a very dangerous nercotic with strong links to mental illness. Whatever if you want to smoke your brains out at home, I don't care, but this drug should stay illegal in order to protect the young people of this nation. It's dangerous and should not be easily excessible to young people.

Just because is had bad side effects doesn't mean it should illegal. If that's the case you should also be in favour of banning, Alchohol, fags, etc. This legal paternalism is idiotic and unsustainable.

Sure your brain hasn't fully developed until you turn 18, of course smoking cannabis would be detrimental to your studies...

Would these stoners ever have amounted to anything if they didn't start smoking dope?
Of maybe the dregs of society are attracted to excessive drug use and they will always be nothing, the drugs are just a byproduct.

Common sense approach, like the idea of having a legal age of 23; at least it shouldn't interfere too much with development.

For every one success, I can guarantee you there are 100's of failures.

    Yo OP
What is your definition of a scientist?

This paper was written by two economists "Economists Olivier Marie and Ulf Zölitz"

I take issue with the articles first line "The most rigorous study yet of the effects of marijuana legalization "
No where in the article does it support the claim that this is the most rigorous study of anything.

Later the article claims " But marijuana policy researcher Rosalie Pacula of RAND Corporation noted that the Maastricht study provide evidence that “is much better than anything done so far in the United States.”"

What has she to do with the original paper?

    Who is the Rand corporation?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAND_Corporation

TLDR article about a paper written by two economists offers headline with huge claim. Yet no supporting evidence offered in article.

Haha what a crap article, this thing is worse than some of the pseudoscience claims i have seen in support of medical marijuana.

Not studying and skipping lectures causes people to have lower grades and higher fail rates. Do you want to make those illegal?

Same here, I've never really hung out with stoners as I've never smoked myself, but somehow in my student days I made a friend who was smoking pot every day, he even cultivated a cute-looking plant at his house.

Nowadays, he is one of the main architects (I don't quite get that part, he didn't study architecture ;)...) for a huge telecommunications company. (The name of which sounds a bit like the OP's username.)

And he is still into his prohibited substances!

I'd be interested to know why the Rand corporation hasn't used Colorado as a case study for the most extensive research into actual marijuana legalization.

Especially seeing as they are us Government body and Colorado is a US state.

So the whole study is all bull because they exaggerated a bit and some nonprofit liked their study?

Come on man. Students will do much worse if they smoke cannabis, yes that's obvious, but now there's a study to prove it.

I just hope these pro cannabis people admit the drug is dangerous and has some serious consequences, not this miracle drug they are trying to promote.

I know this 1 article won't be enough to change much but hopefully it will educate and make some young people aware of the dangers.

well OP if it affects peoples intelligence, then by the looks of things, you must have been smoking bongs of the stuff.

this whole thread and idea behind the thread is ridiculous.

why dont you go and spout all of this nonsense to the parents of children with dravets syndrome or severe epilepsy who's children would probably be in a horrific condition if they didnt give them cannabis oil.

you are completely wrong. the reality of what you're saying cuold be:

Science proves that students who drink alcohol regularly have lower grades...

    it's stupid.
this whole thread and "study" just proves to me that the anti-cannabis brigade are actually the stupid ones who havent a clue and maybe the herb could open their tiny minds that the world doesnt revolve around them and their tiny sh!te opinions.

I'm not here to debate epilepsy and treatment, to be honest, I know nothing about it, also the medical world has very little knowledge of the long term affects of medical cannabis use even though short term use may be positive. But nice of you to use sick infants to promote recreational use.

The stereotypical stoner we all imagine from excessive recreational use of the drug is becoming all too familiar.

Getting bored of these drug threads, just legalise everything and let us all move on with our lives

Legalising cannabis would be the worst thing that could happen to young people.

Look at what Big Alcohol/ Big Tobacco did?

    What would Big Cannabis do?

There does seem to be a case for medical cannabis - a friend in the states who lives in California was taken off her anxiety drug (which had some unwelcome side effects) and put on some kind of cannabis pills, and is a lot happier. Is on them for over a year now.

Also, there's been some media about parents going back and forward to Holland to get cannabis for the sake of their children.

I'm not a scientist, but in my scientific opinion, if someone spends all their time doing anything that isn't studying in college (sport, playstation, socialising, whatever), chances are they will do worse than others who spend all their time studying!

Hey don't call me man, Guy!

No your article isn't useful because there is nothing in it, not that there is mistakes but that there is not one single claim in the whole article that is supported by any evidence offered.

Now if you can find some actual data from the paper, then perhaps we can discuss that, but here is nothing in this article to support your Thread title or the articles title.

To borrow a phrase from another idiot "this is fake news"

Just one final question OP what are the dangers this article identifies?

Yeah because everyone knows stereotypes are the best way to decide public policy! FACT

PS you know its true cause I is a scientist and I typed FACT after I typed that fact! FACT

    The very first paragraph buddy.

"The most rigorous study yet of the effects of marijuana legalization has identified a disturbing result: College students with access to recreational cannabis on average earn worse grades and fail classes at a higher rate."
