Should Ireland allow transgender people in the army?

My one contribution to this whole debate:

Transgender is not a noun. It is an adjective. It describes a noun.

I am transgender. I am a transgender woman.

My friend is transgender. We are transgender people.

To use the term "transgenders" as many posters here have, degrades the transgender person to the level of an object, and is highly derogatory.

I just can't imagine that after going through so much to finally become yourself that you would want to join the army, that great crusher if individuality, of all things.

I know it's about the right to join the army rather than a queue of disappointed candidates, but still...

    I know the proles, right?

We should just jail them all. They are either engaging in crime think, or they will.

No problem with them but they should not get special treatment whatsoever, everyone treated equally and judged on there own merits if they can't cut it then they should be turfed out like anyone else

It's disgraceful to deny transgender people their basic human right of slaughtering and bombing the shite out of brown people.

OP's reasoning was so bizarre I can't bear to read this thread.

'They want to to cut off parts of themselves and you can't ignore suicide stats.' Ffs it's amazing people with such muddled and backwards thought processes think they can judge anyone's competency or suitability to do anything.

This has been raised a few times... where is it coming from?

Like, transgender people aren't some weakling alien species. We allow men and women into the army and nobody ever raises suspicions about one's fitness on account of belonging to either gender.

People who are transgender and apply to join the army are unlikely to have some sort of odd fitness deviation from any other men and women who want to join-up.

I can't help but suspect that people are repeating this point due to some strange perception of transgender people (or is it LGBT people in general?) as somehow weaker members of society?

No. Like many others, I would view transgenderism as a mental illness, not something to be promoted or encouraged and certainly not a mindset I'd want in control of weapons of any sort. Sorry to all the snowflakes here if that offends ye.

What is it about the mindset that you feel is incompatible with using weapons?

Should be handled by someone who is trained in their use and mentally stable enough to do so.

Do you feel that trans people are incapable of being trained to use weapons?
It seems like you are afraid that someone who is willing to put themselves through serious changes to their body is a danger to others/themselves if armed.

Somebody who is willing to put themselves through those changes to their body should not be anywhere near a weapon - their mindset is not stable or normal.

What specific changes do you mean?

There is already many trans people who are army members so frankly your bigoted opinion is just nonsense.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I frankly don't care what you perceive my opinion to be. Tell me this - where was transgenderism 50/60 years ago? Its a mental illness exacerbated by this modern bull**** PC nonsense that feeds and enables it - "you can be anything you feel like, gender is only a social construct".

Get ****ed. Gender is what is between your legs upon birth and no amount of "feelings" or PC bull**** will ever change that fact. If you are male and feel like a woman, or woman and feel like a man, thats a mental disturbance. It needs treatment, not pseudo nonsense attempting to normalise it. It is not normal and never will be.

People who are transgender have existed long before you heard of them.

You don't want to find yourself behind enemy lines and then hear that Sarge the machine gunner has pms.

Even if you believe these things, you really oughtn't feel this strongly about it.

If society at large chooses to define transgender people as mentally ill, then they are mentally ill. Let's not pretend it's not socially determined.

Once upon a time, society as a whole thought that slavery of black people was fine and perfectly acceptable. Things change, and we shouldn't be afraid to challenge pre-conceptions.

I think the logical extension of your argument would be to prevent any person who is experiencing mental difficulties / instability from serving in the armed forces. Why should we focus exclusively on transgender?

Mod-We are done here. Some of the people on this thread are the reason we can't have nice things around here.

I suggest that this thread (which is worthy of debate imo) would be better off in humanities. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=21
